LIFE HAPPENS—REMEMBER THE WELLNESS PROGRAM Sticking to an exercise program is not always easy. Although many people have good intentions, sometimes life just gets in the way. Whether it’s an illness or injury, change in family status or simply not knowing where to begin, our stage in life affects how we exercise, the frequency and even the reasons why we choose to be active. Individuals of all ages and stages need to get and stay physically active. Physical activity, after all, is one of the few activities people of all ages can do to improve their health and quality of life. As the Year Round Wellness Program continues to emphasize physical activity, think about activities or opportunities where the organization could support residents, families and employees’ efforts to be active. Adults ages 18-64 should do both aerobic and strengthening activities. Each offers important health benefits. If you choose activities at a MODERATE LEVEL, do at least two hours and 30 minutes. If you do VIGOROUS activities, do at least one hour and 15 minutes a week.

Slowly build up the amount of time you do physical activities. The more time you spend, the more health benefits you gain.

Do at least 10 minutes at a time.

You can combine moderate and vigorous activities. Do muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week.

Include all the major muscle groups, such as legs, hips, back, chest, stomach, shoulders and arms.

Exercises for each muscle group should be repeated eight to 10 times per session. Physical activity improves your health and can make you feel stronger and more alive. It’s a fun way to be with family and friends.
