Frederick Hale The South African Immorality Act and Sara Lidman’s Jag och min son? candinavian reactions to apartheid in South Africa were almost universally negative since that term for pervasive racial segregation S was coined in the late 1940s. Specifically, journalistic criticism of the National Party, which acceded to power in 1948 and shortly thereafter began to implement its racist programme of social engineering, has always been severe. Prior to the 1960s, however, political and economic ties between the Nordic countries and South Africa remained generally amiable if rarely cordial. Trade was unimpeded, and dozens of Scandinavian companies occupied spaces in the industrial and commercial landscape of South Africa while enough ships of Nordic registry called at Durban and Cape Town to justify the existence of seamen’s missions for their crews in both ports. During the 1960s, though, relations began to sour notably. The legislative bodies of the Scandinavian countries gradually imposed restrictions on commercial links; missionary staffs in South Africa dwindled; and the public image of the Nationalist regime in Pretoria went from bad to virtually demonic. Eventually Scandinavian Airways System cancelled its flights to Johannesburg and, at least on an officially acknowledged level, trade ground to a halt. The Nordic countries, especially Sweden, gained a reputation amongst white South Africans as being some of the most uncompromising international foes of white minority rule. It is not difficult to identify several factors for this worsening of relations around 1960. One of the most obvious is the global reaction © TijdSchrift voor Skandinavistiek, vol. 21 (2000), nr. 1 [ISSN: 0168-2148] 56 TijdSchrift voor Skandinavistiek to the massacre at Sharpeville in March of that year, when South African policemen shot several dozen unarmed blacks who were protesting against the notorious pass laws.

Crime writer, teacher. Dagmar Maria Lange became famous – using the pseudonym of Maria Lang – as the first queen of the Swedish detective novel. She is best known for her 1950s whodunnits involving Puck Bure and detective inspector Christer Wijk. Dagmar Lange grew up in Nora, in Bergslagen. She was the daughter of Elsa Keijser and Clas Lange, a journalist and the publisher of Bergslagens tidning . Following her father’s early demise in 1917 Dagmar Lange’s mother married the travelling salesman Carl Ivar Olson. They had two daughters together, Ingrid and Siv. Having completed high school in Västerås, Dagmar Lange continued her education, first in Uppsala and then Stockholm, where she defended her literary thesis on Pontus Wikner in 1946. She generated a certain controversy by revealing Wikner’s homosexuality in her thesis and this led to a delay in publishing her work. After gaining her doctorate Dagmar Lange spent many years working as a teacher, a director of studies and eventually as principal of Nya elementarskolan (primary school) in Stockholm. She was very well-liked by her students. She would spend her summers in Nora, where she would often sit and write her detective novels. She also spent many years working as a music reviewer (of opera) for Vecko-Journalen .

Hon medarbetade i skämttidningen Strix under signaturen "Maja X".

  • Förteckning Över Elin Vjägners Samling a 48 A
Elin Wägner bodde tidvis hos Flory Gate.

She was also active in radio and wrote books and scripts for films. She worked at the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter 1934–1959, and after that at Vecko-Journalen. Her fame is partly attributed to her coverage of the Olympic games in Berlin and the Spanish civil war 1936. She was active in the fight for women’s emancipation and pacifism. But she was also a human being behind all the work, with a weak constitution, shaky self-confidence, and a lot of self-doubt. Most previous studies and texts about Barbro Alving focus on her journalistic deeds and career. The aim of this study is to apply a new perspective by examining her private texts. She was a non-heterosexual woman in a male dominated profession. She broke norms, which makes her life interesting in her historical and societal context. The aim of the study is to explore Barbro Alving’s self-image and close relationships over the years 1936–1959 through theories about gender and with a microhistorical approach. Due to the length of the period, there is also a question about change and continuity in her self-image. The material used for the study are compilations of Alving’s letters and diaries, spanning over 600 pages.
