Utopia as a perspective: Reading historical strata in Guy Tillim’s documentary photo essay Jo’burg series Intern of Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography Miki Kurisu Utopia as a perspective: Reading historical strata in Guy Tillim’s documentary photo essay Jo’burg series Miki Kurisu 1. Introduction This essay examines the Jo’burg series by Guy Tillim (1962-) which represents a post-apartheid cityscape between 2003 and 2007. Born in Johannesburg in 1962, Guy Tillim started his professional career in 1986 and joined Afrapix, a collective photo agency strongly engaged with the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. He also worked for Reuters from 1986 to 1988 and then for Agence France Presse from 1993 to 1994. He has received numerous awards including Prix SCAM (2002), Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Award (2003), Daimler Chrysler Award for South African photography (2004) and Leica Oskar Barnack Award for his Jo’burg series. This series was chosen as an object of analysis out of other important works by equally significant South African photographers, such as Ernest Cole (1940-1990), Omar Badsha (1945-), David Goldblatt (1930-) and Santu Mofokeng (1956-) since the Jo’burg series enables us to follow the historical development of South African photography. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jan. 29, 2008 CONTACT: Matt Stevens [email protected] 6264052167 New Exhibition, “Smith on Wry: Jack Smith, Columnist for Our Times,” Opens Feb. 15, 2008 Huntington Library installation will examine the late journalist’s life and his impact on readers across Southern California SAN MARINO, Calif.—Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith wrote daily for most of his 42year career with the paper, producing some 6,000 columns about life in the city. Along the way he became one of the most popular newspaper columnists in Southern California history; reading him was considered a daily “must.” He died in January 1996, just a few weeks after the appearance of his last column, on Christmas Day 1995. A new exhibition running at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens from Feb. 15 to May 12, 2008, takes a look at Smith the journalist, family man, and social commentator. The Huntington acquired Smith’s papers in 2005. “Jack Smith had a way of looking at mundane and everyday things and ruminating on them in ways that were accessible on the one hand and provocative on the other,” says Sara S. “Sue” Hodson, curator of literary manuscripts at The Huntington and the show’s curator. “His beat was L.A., but he wrote larger stories of the human condition, wry and pithy observations on the foibles of people in changing times.” Hodson takes a page from Smith’s own columns, dividing her exhibition into the very same themes Smith explored in his columns: his Mt. Frederick Hale The South African Immorality Act and Sara Lidman’s Jag och min son? candinavian reactions to apartheid in South Africa were almost universally negative since that term for pervasive racial segregation S was coined in the late 1940s. Specifically, journalistic criticism of the National Party, which acceded to power in 1948 and shortly thereafter began to implement its racist programme of social engineering, has always been severe. Prior to the 1960s, however, political and economic ties between the Nordic countries and South Africa remained generally amiable if rarely cordial. Trade was unimpeded, and dozens of Scandinavian companies occupied spaces in the industrial and commercial landscape of South Africa while enough ships of Nordic registry called at Durban and Cape Town to justify the existence of seamen’s missions for their crews in both ports. During the 1960s, though, relations began to sour notably. The legislative bodies of the Scandinavian countries gradually imposed restrictions on commercial links; missionary staffs in South Africa dwindled; and the public image of the Nationalist regime in Pretoria went from bad to virtually demonic. Eventually Scandinavian Airways System cancelled its flights to Johannesburg and, at least on an officially acknowledged level, trade ground to a halt. The Nordic countries, especially Sweden, gained a reputation amongst white South Africans as being some of the most uncompromising international foes of white minority rule. It is not difficult to identify several factors for this worsening of relations around 1960.
