The Volume was edited by Mr. James M. Campbell, I.C.S.This Gazetteer compiled 104 years ago has now become scarce and has gone out ofprint. The second revised edition of the Satara District Gazetteer was published by thisdepartment in 1963. However, the utility of the Gazetteer in the old Series is stillundiminished because it contains authentic and very useful information on severalaspects of life, and has the impress of profound scholarship and learning. It has not lostits utility due to the mere passage of time. It was, therefore, felt necessary to preservethis treasure of information for posterity. There is also a good demand from scholarsthat all the Old Gazetteers should be reprinted even though a better and muchinformative revised edition is available. With these considerations in view, it was thoughtthat the Gazetteer Volumes in the Old Series should be reprinted. I am sure, scholarsand studious persons will find it very useful. It may be pertinent to state that a totally rewritten Marathi edition of the SataraDistrict Gazetteer is being brought out by us. I am thankful to the Director, Government Printing and Stationery, Shri B. B.Bracken and the Manager, Government Photozinco Press, Pune, Shri P. L. Contents Prologue I am very glad to bring out the e-Book Edition (CD version) of the Satara District Gazetteer. This CD version is a part of a scheme of preparing compact discs or earlier published District Gazetteers. The Satara District Gazetteer was first published in 1884 by the British Government in the series of Gazetteers of the Bombay Presidency. The volume was edited by Mr.James M, Campbell. I.C.S. It contains authentic and useful information on several aspects of the district and is considered to be of great value to administrators, scholars and general readers. The revised edition of it was compiled and published in 1963. But the old gazetteer published during the British regime contained much valuable information, which was not reproduced in the revised edition. Therefore, the department decided to reprint this volume. Accordingly Satara District Gazetteer (1885) was reprinted in 1989. Considering its utility, need was felt to preserve this treasure of knowledge. In this age of modernization, information and technology have become key words. To keep pace with the changing need of hour, I have decided to bring Satara CD. version of this edition. It is also made available on the website of the State Gobernment www.maharashtra.gov.in. I am sure, scholars and studious persons across the world will find this CD immensely beneficial. A totally rewritten Marathi edition of the Satara District Gazetteer was published by us 1999. THE following notes on the botany of the district are contributed by Major H. H.Lee, RE.: The Satara district affords an interesting field for the botanist, comprising as it does so great a variety of soil and climate. The plains and bare bills of the eastern districts may be readily exhausted but the observer will have his hands full when he approaches the Western Ghats crosses the Koyna valley, and traverses the boundary line between Satara and the Konkan. The grassy slopes of the Ghats teem with luxuriant growth in the latter part of September, when the heavy rains are over, and a visitor to Mahabaleshvar on a fine day at this season is well repaid by the varied colouring of the wild flowers. Later on in October and November the western spurs are brightened by the vivid yellows of Composites and the pink of strong-growing Balsams, whilst pretty Smithias and hosts of other species of the pea-tribe carpet the forest side. There are few better spots for botanising than the re-entering angle of the FitzGerald Pass below Elphinstone Cottage, early in November and even later. The traveller will admire too the pretty mauve balsams that grow out of his reach, clinging to the rock under the big waterfall higher up. The sheltered portions of the Koyna valley are well wooded and would be more so had kumri or wood ash cultivation never been allowed. No very large amount of useful timber is however to be found

It is only after the establishment of our college, initially with Arts and Commerce streams/faculties, many of the villages of Poladpur tehsil got their first graduate students as there was no institution imparting higher education available in the area even after the fifty years of Indian independence.

    Description of the Region (Geographical extent, topography, climate, and vegetation) The Maharashtra state is about 800 km east-west and 700 km north-south, an irregular dentate pentagon, lying between 22" r-16 " 4' north latitude and 72 " 6'-80 " 9' east longitude, covering an area of 3,07,690 sq km. It is limited to the west by the Arabian Sea, making a long coastline of 720 km. by Goa and Karnataka to the south, by Andhra Pradesh on the south-east, and Madhya Pradesh on the north, and Gujarat to its north-west (Map 1). Western Ghats or Sahyadri separate coastal strip of Konkan from rest of the plateau and thereby altitude ranges from mean sea level to about 1200 m on Western Ghats (with some highest peaks in the range like Kalsubai- 1654 m, Mahabaleshwar- 1382 m) and about 200-900 m over the rest. Average rainfall in the state varies from 250 cm in Konkan to 60-75 cm in Marathwada and again increasing to 150 cm towards eastern most part of Maharashtra that is Vidarbha. It forms a large part of Indian Peninsula. Similarly temperature varies between I5"C-47''C. Relative humidity fluctuate between 15% to 90%. Nearly 21% of the geographical area is under forest. Physiography Physiographically the state is divided into 5 divisions 1. Konkan, 2. Deccan or Desh, 3. Khandesh, 4. Marathwada and 5. Vidarbha (Map 2). Konkan, a narrow coastal strip of the west of Sahyadris, varies between 27-48 km in breadth and 800 km in length from Goa to Tapi Basin.

Carlson Abstract We examine the role that flood basalt eruptions may have played during times of mass extinction through the release of volcanic gases. Continental flood basalt provinces have formed by numerous eruptions over a short period of geologic time, characteristically a few million years. Within this period, a short-lived climactic phase that lasts about 1 Ma typically emplaces a large proportion of the lava volume. This phase consists of a series of huge eruptions, each yielding 103–104 km3 of magma. Each eruption lasted on the order of a decade or more, and built an immense pāhoehoe-dominated lava flow field by eruptive activity along fissures tens to hundreds of km long. High fire-fountains, emanating from vents along the fissures, at times sustained eruption columns that lofted gas and ash into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere while the lava flows covered huge areas. The combination of large eruption magnitudes, maintained high effusion rates during eruptions, and the repeated nature of the characteristic, large-scale eruptive activity occurs in Earth history only during periods of flood basalt volcanism.

    Materials & Methods The specimens were collected during the extensive collecting programmes carried out under the All India Co-ordinated Project on Taxonomy, Ministry of Environment and Forest. Government of India, at various forest localities (given below) of western Maharashtra during the last three years. The specimens were dried, studied and were kept in labelled folders with details of locality, date, and name of the collector etc. All specimens were deposited in Ajrekar Mycological Herbarium (AMH), at Agharkar Research Institute in Pune. Collecting Localities Collections were mainly made in western Maharashtra where humidity is comparitively high, and the flora in these regions is diverse, compared to the other drier regions of Maharashtra for example Khandesh, Marathwada and Vidharbha, where the humidity is very low and are not suitable for the lichen growth and we often get material too scanty and insufficient to be studied and identified correctly. Discussion The present study has been aimed to carry out an assessment of landslides and zonation of landslide hazards in North Konkan region of Maharashtra State. It involves generation of database (landslide inventory) of slope failures, landslide hazard zonation and landslide risk assessment. Landslide inventory has been prepared using past records of slope failures from concerned government offices. The details of landslides such as location, site details and geometry parameters were confirmed during the field survey. Distribution analysis has been carried out for slope failures in the study area to study spatio-temporal patterns of distribution. The main focus of the study was to delineate landslide hazard zones using method developed by Bureau of hidian Standards (BIS, 1998) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based model. Landslide Hazard zonation at regional scale has been carried out and validation is done using appropriate method. In addition to this, qualitative landslide risk assessment was also done to delineate the risk areas associated with slope failures in North Konkan. 7.1.1. Identiflcation and mapping of landslide prone areas The first objective of the study was to identify and map landslide prone areas and prepare landslide inventory for the study area. The landslide database of 1072 slope failure events has been generated using records of past slope failures for the period of 11 years from 2004-2014 collected from concerned government offices. This has been supplemented with the field survey wherein details of 181 slope failure events have been recorded.

It is a marker horizon exposed in a[30,000 km2 area below the Mahabaleshwar Formation in the western DVP. Its presence, distribution and stratigraphic importance as a regional marker horizon are enumerated. Available geochronological and paleomagnetic data suggest that the stratigraphic position of the Rajgad GPB coincides with polarity reversal in Chron 29 recorded from the basaltic lava sequence of the Western DVP.
