Dear Professor Oliveira,

I am writing to express our support for the application by the Urban Design Studies Unit at the University of Strathclyde to host the ISUF (International Seminar of Urban Form) 2021 Conference in Glasgow, UK.

As founding partners of the Centre for the Future of Spaces at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, we are active in research into urban form and its impacts. We are currently collaborating with the University of Strathclyde in their work on "plot-based urbanism" as an exploration of urban scale and morphology. We are also partners with UN-Habitat in development and implementation of the New Urban Agenda, and particularly its goals for urban form and public space. Currently we are also in partnerships with other universities on impacts of urban form on well-being, including a project with ETH Zurich and TU-Vienna.

Incidentally, I was also the co-host of the ISUF at The Prince's Foundation in London in 2004, along with my then-colleague Matthew Hardy. I am therefore well aware of the focus of the organisation and I support its mission, and I do think the University of Strathclyde would be an exceptionally good fit for the 2021 event.

For these reasons, I have no hesitation in offering my support for the application of the University of Strathclyde to host this event.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Mehaffy, Ph.D. Project Leader Ax:son Johnson Foundation Centre for the Future of Places, KTH University

29th May 2019

Dear Vitor Oliveira

I am writing to express my support for the application by the Urban Design Studies Unit at the University of Strathclyde to host the ISUF (International Seminar of Urban Form) 2021 Conference in Glasgow.

URBED is one of the leading urban design practitioners in the UK having won the 2019 and having been nominated as the Urban Design Group’s practice of the year on two occasions. As a office we seek to combine practice with research and have relationships with a number of UK universities including Sheffield, Manchester the Bartlett and Strathclyde. Each of these schools has a different approach and Strathclyde is a leader in plot based urbanism which is in my view the most promising avenue of investigation in investigating future urban form.

I am also the Chair of the Academy of Urbanism which has more than a thousand members, largely in the UK are Ireland and which promotes good urbanism and placemaking. I’m sure that there would be opportunities to tie the conference into the AoU for marketing if that was acceptable.

I believe that they would therefore be an excellent place to host the conference and have no hesitation in offering my support for their application.

Yours Sincerely

David Rudlin Director URBED
