  • Annie Lennox: Diva/Medusa
Annie Lennox: Diva/Medusa spectrumculture.com/2018/03/12/annie-lennox-diva-medusa Daniel Bromfield March 12, 2018 At its best, Annie Lennox’s music is as deep, comforting and mysterious as that of Sade, the Blue Nile, or any of the other great sophisticated pop acts from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. But in Lennox’s voice there’s a certain acidity that grounds us firmly in reality rather than suave fantasy. Ugly, real emotions are never far beneath the illusion, and on her cover of “Take Me to the River” or as she whispers into the mic on “Why,” she’s ready to kill. Even on something as atmospheric as “Downtown Lights,” she never allows herself to disappear into the mix. Helen Folasade Adu never loses her cool, but Lennox ends her best-known solo song, a jaw-dropping cover of obscure British band The Lover Speaks’ “No More I Love You’s,” by bursting into tears. Lennox was a relative veteran by the time she released her solo debut Diva at 37. She’d come to fame in the Eurythmics but had been kicking around since the ‘70s, as part of Scottish band the Tourists. After her personal and professional relationship with guitarist Dave Stewart ended, Lennox wrote most of Diva herself and settled on a new sound: less lean and more immersive than that project’s rock-band hijinks, with Lennox’s voice in the center of an environment rather than at the front of a machine. Diva opens with a wash of pads so lush and pillowy our heads sink right back into it.

Lennox’s music career is peerless, with more than 80 million record sales to date and countless awards, while her tireless charity work is widely praised, with prestigious awards and honors. In 1971, at the age of 17, Lennox left her native Scotland after gaining a place at the Royal Academy of Music in London. From a chance encounter with Dave Stewart in the early seventies, the pair went on to form The Tourists, who ultimately achieved significant success in the UK, Europe and Australia. It was not until the break-up of the band in ’79 however, that Lennox and Stewart decided to form a duo, calling themselves “Eurythmics.” They released their first album,In the Garden, in 1981, but it was not until the worldwide success of their second album, Sweet Dreams Are Made of This, in 1983, that Eurythmics became the musical phenomenon we know today. Eurythmics went on to sell more than 75 million albums, and achieved more than 20 international hits across the globe. 2 In 1990, Lennox released her debut solo album, entitled Diva.

WE’RE CHEAP THAT WAY Written by Kyoung H. Park “We’re Cheap That Way” was inspired by Annie Lennox’s “Walking on Broken Glass” and written for Ensemble Studio Theater’s Youngblood. It was performed Oct. 6-8, 2011 and directed by Andrew Grosso. 1 THE PLAYERS LOUIS XVI …………………………………………. King of France MARIE ANTOINETTE ………………………………. Queen of France CHARLES HENRI SANSON ………………………… The Executioner SETTING The Temple, a medieval fortress in Paris TIME 16th of January, 1793 2 (At rise: We are in the Temple, a medieval fortress in Paris. It is late in the evening and Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are playing Jenga.) LOUIS: (singing and moving a Jenga piece) I’m living in an empty room. MARIE: (singing and moving a piece) With all the windows smashed. LOUIS: (singing and moving a piece) I’ve got so little left to loose. MARIE: The National Assembly will retract our execution. Surely, they won’t behead us… will they…? … Louis? LOUIS: (lost in the game) I don’t know Marie. MARIE: What’s taking them so long? Their deliberation is endless! LOUIS: (placing a piece on top of the tower.) It’s called due process of the law, mon cherie. MARIE: (to the audience) Those revolutionaries don’t have laws, they're beasts, like the ones I saw le Youtube. Have you seen that video with the baby buffalo that gets kidnapped by lions, but is snatched by a crocodile that plays tug on war with that poor infant until the buffalos return to confront the lions with absolute vengeance in their eyes—! LOUIS: It’s your turn.

  • My Life with Annie Lennox: Sweet Dreams by Abby Higgs
Your online wake and bake. My Life with Annie Lennox: Sweet Dreams By Abby Higgs October 22nd, 2015 “My Life with Annie Lennox” is a series of essays about a young woman navigating through life with Annie Lennox as her guide. This is the first installment. *** Honestly, my thirteen-year-old worldview was not profoundly telescopic. Somehow, though, I knew that I was going to struggle with puberty for the rest of my life; that the awkwardness I was just beginning to experience—so fresh that it didn’t yet leave me uncomfortable, just shocked—wasn’t going to be “just a phase” for me; it would be a personality trait. It didn’t help that I had the body of a deflating blow-up doll—a lopsided chest, flat ass, and skinny arms that qualified as “gangly.” This state of adolescent asymmetry would have depressed me more were I the only person in my household experiencing it. Thankfully, my younger brother Zach was falling prey to the onslaught of puberty as well; he seemed to be morphing into one of those thirty-foot inflatable arm-flailing tube men at car dealerships and tradeshows. A gust of wind could blow him over. No, even back then I knew full-well that the awkwardness from which I expected to suffer for decades was not just physical in nature. Whereas Zach’s would go away, mine would not. In time, I would learn how to carve the attribute into a finely-chiseled self-deprecating sense of humor. But before I had the wherewithal to do so, I despaired, convinced I’d forever trip over my words, or miscalculate the volume of my voice, or drop food from my mouth while eating, following the crumb’s trajectory down to my lap where it would leave an awkward Australia-shaped stain.
