You must choose at least one of these options. A second option may be selected, however if there are clashes between your sport’s, you will be expected to choose one. Each child is expected to choose Rugby, Football or Hockey as a compulsory option in winter. COMPULSORY SPORT Boys will confirm their sports choices at the start of Term One however, boys will be expected to show an indication of their intentions in Term Four to help planning for the following year’s sport. In the past few years some students have committed themselves to a wide range of activities without the necessary planning and preparation required to fitting everything in. It is important that boys are aware of their commitments to their number one sport choice they commit to further activities that could lead to possible clashes. Our suggestion is that a student can manage a Cultural/Sporting activity in each season Summer/Winter and still complete the required homework and family activities. All boys are expected to be at all practices and games for their team. If a boy cannot attend, he must bring a note to the Sports Department well in advance to explain his absence, upon which he will be given an ORANGE form to excuse him from sport and allow him onto the school bus. Failure to do so may result in a Sport Detention. CULTURAL MONDAYS/WEDNESDAYS Any after school sport on a Monday or Wednesday will be at the discretion of the Sports Department. Any sport training occurring on these days must take into account the priority that cultural activities have. SPORT TUESDAYS/THURSDAYS These days are sporting afternoons and students are expected to participate in school arranged activities unless exempted. No boy will be disadvantaged participating in cultural activities. FULL SCHOOL EVENTS Throughout the year there are five major compulsory school sports events that all boys will participate in. A brief description of each of these events follows: 1. Rathkeale Athletics Sports: All boys compete in their age groups, which are as of 1st January 2020. If boys do not qualify for finals, they will compete in the non-championship/mass participation events on the day of the sports. Please ensure your boy checks to the sports office to see what finals he has made before the event. 2. All Boys will be required to attend whether they are competing, or not. If boys do not qualify for finals, they will compete in the non-championship/mass participation events on the day of the sports. • Can 7 Aside Rugby Improve Australian Rugby?
Can 7 aside Rugby Improve Australian Rugby? Since the 1990s Australia's rugby teams have had a relatively high success rate, with the Wallabies ranking in the top 3 international teams regularly and our Super Rugby Franchises winning 3 Super Rugby Championships (equal to South Africa). The successes of the Wallabies and their Australian Rugby franchises could easily lead someone to believing that rugby in Australia is one of the most popular sports and has a high level of player participation. However, things aren’t, as they seem. Rugby in Australia is located in, arguably the most competitive organized sport market in the world. Rugby Union was ranked only the 9th highest participated organized sport in Australia in 2012 (according to the ABS (2012a) Survey of Children's Participation in Culture and Leisure Activities, Australia, 2012 (CPCLA) (cat. no. 4901.0), with only 4% of children playing the sport, well behind Soccer at 21.7%, Australian Football League (AFL) at 14.9% and Rugby League on 7.5%. In fact Australia has as little as 86,952 players participating in the game, while America has grown to 81,678 participants (according to The Economic Impact Report On Global Rugby: Strategic and Emerging Market report). Compare that to England 2,549,196 and South Africa (632,184), Australia ranks well behind it’s international competitors in player participation. Which shows that despite the participation numbers Australia has punched well above its weight. When looking towards the future can Rugby sustain its position in this very competitive organized sport market? I believe that Australian Rugby is at a cross road in which it has a choice of continuing on the same road it is travelling on or to look for ways to reinvent itself and increase the player participation rate, especially in the juniors.

  • Rugby for Disabled People in Scotland This Fact Sheet Provides an Overview of Rugby for Disabled People in Scotland
Rugby for Disabled People in Scotland This fact sheet provides an overview of rugby for disabled people in Scotland. It also provides useful contact details to signpost you to your local club to develop your skills and start to play or coach disabled people in rugby. Wheelchair Rugby Background "...a full contact, fast and dynamic sport..." Wheelchair rugby is a team sport for both male and female athletes with a disability and is a Summer Paralympic sport. A unique sport created by disabled athletes, it combines elements of rugby, basketball and handball. Developed in Winnipeg, Canada in 1976, the sport's original name was murderball. The United States name "quad rugby" is based on the fact that all wheelchair rugby players need to have disabilities that include at least some loss of function in at least three limbs—most are medically classified as quadriplegic. The sport is governed by the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) which was established in 1993. Rules in a Nutshell Players compete in teams of four to carry the ball across the opposing team's goal line. Contact between wheelchairs is permitted, and is in fact an integral part of the sport as players use their chairs to block and hold opponents. Wheelchair rugby is mostly played by two teams of up to twelve players. Only four players from each team may be on the court at any time. It is a mixed gender sport, and both male and female athletes play on the same teams and in the same competitions. Why play? As well as the excitement and adrenaline of a fast paced, action filled, full contact sport, there are many other benefits of the sport.
