    Volume 16, 2021 NARRATIVE INQUIRY INTO CHINESE INTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL STUDENTS’ JOURNEY: A STRENGTH-BASED PERSPECTIVE Shihua Brazill Montana State University, Bozeman, [email protected] MT, USA ABSTRACT Aim/Purpose This narrative inquiry study uses a strength-based approach to study the cross- cultural socialization journey of Chinese international doctoral students at a U.S. Land Grant university. Historically, we thought of socialization as an institu- tional or group-defined process, but “journey” taps into a rich narrative tradi- tion about individuals, how they relate to others, and the identities that they carry and develop. Background To date, research has employed a deficit perspective to study how Chinese stu- dents must adapt to their new environment. Instead, my original contribution is using narrative inquiry study to explore cross-cultural socialization and mentor- ing practices that are consonant with the cultural capital that Chinese interna- tional doctoral students bring with them. Methodology This qualitative research uses narrative inquiry to capture and understand the experiences of three Chinese international doctoral students at a Land Grant in- stitute in the U.S. Contribution This study will be especially important for administrators and faculty striving to create more diverse, supportive, and inclusive academic environments to en- hance Chinese international doctoral students’ experiences in the U.S. Moreo- ver, this study fills a gap in existing research by using a strength-based lens to provide valuable practical insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymak- ers to support the unique cross-cultural socialization of Chinese international doctoral students. Findings Using multiple conversational interviews, artifacts, and vignettes, the study sought to understand the doctoral experience of Chinese international students’ experience at an American Land Grant University.

It’s the heart of man that is in turmoil!” (Buddhist canon) In the winter of 1992, someone suggested that I make a film adaptation of Louis Cha’s famous martial-arts novel The Eagle-Shooting Heroes. I re-read all four volumes of it and finally decided not to do an adaptation but instead to develop a new story about the early years of two of its main characters, Dongxie (Lord of the East) and Xidu (Lord of the West). I chose these two because they have exactly opposite personalities; you could think of one as the antithesis of the other. I tried to depart a little from the traditional martial-arts genre. Instead of treating these characters as heroes, I wanted to see them as ordinary people – at the stage before they became heroes. I knew where these characters were going to end up and there was nothing I could do to change it. This imbued both me and the film with a sense of fatalism. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that there are several different versions of ASHES OF TIME in circulation, some approved by me, some not, as well as the fact that the film was never released in much of the world including the United States.

    Social Mobility in China, 1645-2012: A Surname Study Yu (Max) Hao and Gregory Clark, University of California, Davis [email protected], [email protected] 11/6/2012 The dragon begets dragon, the phoenix begets phoenix, and the son of the rat digs holes in the ground (traditional saying). This paper estimates the rate of intergenerational social mobility in Late Imperial, Republican and Communist China by examining the changing social status of originally elite surnames over time. It finds much lower rates of mobility in all eras than previous studies have suggested, though there is some increase in mobility in the Republican and Communist eras. But even in the Communist era social mobility rates are much lower than are conventionally estimated for China, Scandinavia, the UK or USA. These findings are consistent with the hypotheses of Campbell and Lee (2011) of the importance of kin networks in the intergenerational transmission of status. But we argue more likely it reflects mainly a systematic tendency of standard mobility studies to overestimate rates of social mobility. This paper estimates intergenerational social mobility rates in China across three eras: the Late Imperial Era, 1644-1911, the Republican Era, 1912-49 and the Communist Era, 1949-2012. Was the economic stagnation of the late Qing era associated with low intergenerational mobility rates? Did the short lived Republic achieve greater social mobility after the demise of the centuries long Imperial exam system, and the creation of modern Westernized education? The exam system was abolished in 1905, just before the advent of the Republic. Exam titles brought high status, but taking the traditional exams required huge investment in a form of “human capital” that was unsuitable to modern growth (Yuchtman 2010).

After conducting binding test onto 15 youngsters and 15 elderly, results obtaining through this study are as follows: 1) For labor saving and force application, the stapler with 42.8mm operational height is the most efficient one, whose binding force is 5.98kg. 2) For the three staplers designed for the elderly group in this study, labor-saving structural design can increase the operability for the elderly. The stapler with the best efficacy is in an operational height of 55mm, followed by 50mm and then 42.8mm. Besides considering the labor-saving structure, the design of stapler also takes simplified operation into consideration. The experimental results in this study reveal that it can effectively increase the whole efficiency for the elderly through taking 50mm as the operational height as it can reduce the operational strength and shorten the action distance. Marco Polo In February 1940, representatives from the China Muslim National Salvation society in Beijing came to the fabled maritime Silk Road city of Quanzhou, Fujian, known to Marco Polo as Zaitun, in order to interview the members of a lineage surnamed "Ding" who resided then and now in Chendai Township, Jinjiang County. In response to a question on his ethnic background, Mr. Ding Deqian answered: "We are Muslims [Huijiao reo], our ancestors were Muslims" (Zhang 1940:1). It was not until 1979, however, that these Muslims became minzu, an ethnic nationality. After attempting to convince the State for years that they belonged to the Hui nationality, they were eventually accepted. The story of the late recognition of the members of the Ding lineage in Chendai Town and the resurgence of their ethnoreligious identity as Hui and as Muslims is a fascinating reminder that there still exist remnants of the ancient connections between Quanzhou and the Western Regions, the origin points of the Silk Road.

Two groups—one experimental and one traditional—of beginning Chinese learners from two universities in the Midwest participated in this study. The experimental group (n=20) used the online application to practice tones for four 15-minute sessions in class. The traditional group (n=11) participated in traditional instructor-led practice in class in lieu of the online practice. Both groups completed a pre-test, an immediately administered post-test, and a delayed post-test designed to assess their perception of the tones of monosyllabic and disyllabic words. No statistically significant difference has been found between the two groups in their tone perception performance in the post-test and in the delayed post-test. However, the experimental group showed a positive trend in improving their perception on those tones which posed more difficulty than others. Their experience with this online application and the pronunciation learning strategies of participants in the experimental group were also examined through a survey. Based on the findings, it is proposed that the use of online tone practice is worthwhile in a Chinese language class, but might fit better into the curriculum as external assignments.
