All of the clubs in Region I realize that we are going to have to communicate all of the positive policies of the new administration. Unfortunately, we are fighting all of the negative and inaccurate information the liberal press is dishing out. THEY CANNOT FACE LOSING! I think we all add to that line, “if we did this with Obama, we would be called every name in the book!” So, the bottom line is that our clubs know “it ain’t over!” We all rested and enjoyed Christmas and the New Year. Well, put down the cham- pagne glasses, drink some strong coffee and get back to work. And this is how they are doing it, with Nancy Holly and Melanie Grammar leading the way! They soon understood we have to stop being pushed around by Jeannette the Dems and the liberal media into “thinking” the way they do!! SD 1: What better way to start than to have leadership training Sterner workshops, which RWNT and PCRW did in January. Smith Co RW had a “mix and mingle” close to the university so as to bring in new EMAIL members, especially young members. RWWC is planning PCRW had [email protected] a Black History program. Like other clubs, RWWC is planning their Lincoln Day Dinner at Lands Inn Country Club. Unfortunately, the quarter ended on a very sad note. Mollie Herrington, who was the District Directors previous DP for the region, died in March and her funeral was March 14.

Wright, Ph.D. Cheryl Lero Jonson, Ph.D. i ABSTRACT Over the past half-century, the United States has embarked on an unprecedented prison- building endeavor. Motivated by historical context, political gamesmanship, and rising crime rates, voters in the late 1960s began to reward politically “tough-on-crime” candidates—that is, those who promised to combat crime and other social problems through increasingly punitive sanctions. To accommodate this shift in public policy, the nation embarked on a sustained mass imprisonment movement, constructing .3 million new prison beds by 2009. Initially championed by conservative Republicans and later adopted by Democrats, it seemed as if this policy choice became an irreversible preference of the American electorate. Nowhere were the practical and political effects of “tough-on-crime” policy more apparent than in the State of Texas. With the state prison population increasing 1,522 percent from 1960 to 2009, Texas’s criminal justice system was seen as the archetypal punitive system, featuring revocation-prone terms of probation, long sentences, and the prolific use of capital punishment.
