*REQUIRED INFORMATION 1111111111111111111111 Senator Tom Harkin Floor Statement of the St. Louis Rams 1/27/00

Mr. President, I rise to pay tribute to the Iowa boys who led the St. *u Rams to victory in last Sunday's . Kurt Warner, a native of Bngon, Iowa and Offensive Lineman , a native of Cherokee, Iowa. It's a bittersweet irony that a third Iowa native, injured Quarterback , couldn't play this season and so Kurt Warner stepped in to the position.

Nobody - I mean, NOBODY - could have predicted that Kurt Warner would be holding the Super Bowl trophy under the Georgia Dome last Sunday. Not the Kurt Warner who was stocking the shelves of the Hy-Vee Market in Cedar Falls, Iowa a few years ago. Not the Kurt Warner who was bypassed by the NFL draft out of college and went straight to the Iowa Barnstormers and then the Amsterdam Admirals. And certainly not the Kurt Warner who warmed the bench at the University of Northern Iowa.

Mr. President, this is a true American success story. An Iowa boy comes from the bench to Super Bowl 2000 where he sets a Super Bowl record for passing yards -- 414 yards in all, topping 's 1989 Super Bowl record of 357 yards. It doesn't get much better than that!

And Kurt Warner had help from another Iowa boy, Adam Timmerman, the Rams offensive lineman, a native of Cherokee, Iowa. Timmerman and the Rams offensive line held the Titans to one sack in the entire game, allowing Warner time to complete the passes that won him his Super Bowl record.

You know, I'm sure many of you have heard me talk about the ladder of opportunity, about leaving the ladder down so others can climb up. Well, Kurt Warner built his own ladder of opportunity, sticking with it at every turn, persevering against odds that would sink a weaker man. It's great to see him at the top.

Iowa is proud of its native sons and daughters. For the past several months, Iowa has been in the public eye because of the Caucuses. And now that the Iowa Caucuses are behind us, Iowans are proud to share the spotlight with homegrown heroes Kurt Warner and Adam Timmerman. I know we all wish Kurt and Adam good luck in this Sunday's in Honolulu. K THE DES MOINES REGISTER 1/15/2000

Ann, It is always difficult to say anything nice about an offensive lineman's play. They usually only get noticed when they screw up, by being penalized for holding or allowing the quarterback to be sacked. What you could say about Timmerman is that the offensive line only allowed quarterback Kurt Warner to be sacked once the entire game, giving him time to complete passes for a record 414 yards. Can anybody tell me if St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Adam Timmerman (from Cherokee, Iowa) made any outstanding plays in the Super Bowl? We're doing a floor statement about Kurt Warner and need to work Timmerman in, as well. Thanks. The Official Website of the St. Louis Rams http://go.stlouisrams.com/article/543

Tuesday Feb. 1, 2000 09:19:13 AM CST SUPERBOWL MVP WARNER

READY FOR A BREAK I EAE CTGRE

Monday, January 31, 2000 NewsRoom - TopStories JANUARY 31, 15:28 EST Super MVP Warner Ready for a Break By R.B. FALLSTROM AP Sports Writer ATLANTA (AP) - The No. 1 priority for Kurt Warner the day after the Super Bowl: rest. The sixth player in league history to win the regular-season and Super Bowl MVP awards didn't get any sleep after Sunday night's stirring 23-16 victory over the . "Not a wink," Warner said Monday. "It was all right. I've got plenty of time to catch up before minicamp starts." Warner said that after the celebration, visits with his family and a long talk with backup quarterback - his roommate - there just wasn't time. There also was the lasting euphoria from his Super Bowl-record 414-yard passing game and the 73-yard game-winning strike to with 1:54 to play. "I will remember last night for the rest of my life," commissioner told Warner. Warner said he hoped to top it. How? "Do the same thing, get another ring," Warner said. "I don't know if there is any other way to do it better than we did it this year, than to be able to repeat next year." There's no doubt in Warner's mind that the Rams, who improved from 4-12 to 16-3 in Mn one season, can do it. Cornerback , who can be an unrestricted free agent, is the only major player not under contract for next season. Warner, who played for the league minimum of $254,000 this year, said he hoped to persuade Lyght and the other potential free agents not to look so much at the bottom line. He's got some perspective. Six years ago he was working for $5.50 an hour stocking grocery store shelves at the Hy-Vee in Cedar Falls, Iowa. His future wife, Brenda, was on food stamps. "Other things are more important to me, and hopefully that can rub off with some of the other guys," Warner said. "We have got a lot of great character on this team and can really look beyond that." Coach thinks Warner, who had 41 passes and led the NFL in and completion percentage in his first season as a starter, can get better. On Monday, the coach mentioned that Warner strayed from fundamentals as the season wore on and had a number of passes batted down. "I could see signs of him disintegrating a little bit because you only have so many hours on the field," Vermeil said. "I think we can change our approach a little bit."

I of 2 2/1/2000 10:19 AM The Official Website of the St. Louis Rams http://go.stlouisrams.com/article/543

Of course, Vermeil also sees Warner as the ultimate success story. "It is not a fairy tale, it is real life," Vermeil said after the game. "He is a great example of persistence and believing in himself and a deep faith. He is a movie; he is a book, this guy." This week figures to be a lot more laid-back for Warner, even if he and seven teammates are heading for the Pro Bowl on Sunday. Bruce, , tackle and guard Adam Timmerman are the other offensive players making the trip for the game in Honolulu. The defense will be represented by end Kevin Carter, cornerback Todd Lyght and tackle D'Marco Farr. "Obviously, we've got another football game to play," Warner said. "But I hear it's a more relaxed atmosphere." register A
