Winegard paid his first official visit to the University of Guelph campus and addressed the members of the faculty and their wives at a special meeting in War Memorial Hall. In introducing the new President, Chairman of the Board of Governors, T.A. McEwan, paid tribute to Dr. Winegard's outstanding qualifications for the demanding role he has accepted. "Selecting our newPresident was not the most difficult, but it was the most important decision made in 1966," he said. Dr. Winegard, in his remarks, said, "I can never understand the argument that a professor could do research without teaching, or teach without doing research. I hope to continue doing research, and a little teaching." This campus has an outstanding and proud past. I look to the future, knowing that much hard work has been done in the past. I will continue to aim for the ideal - a sense of purpose and excellence in my chosen field." In conclusion, he told the story of Thomas Jefferson, who when presenting his credentials as Ambassador to France, received the comment, "I see you have come to replace Benjamin Franklin." It is intended foruse by elementary school teachers of ESL and regular classroom teachers whose classes contain ESL students. An introductory chapter outlines the origins of the approach in language learning theory, cognitive and humanistic psychology, and educational principles, and describes the educational model in question. The second chapter discussesthe application of the model to the selection anduse of instructional materials, and the third chapter addresses lesson and unit planning. Three subsequent chapters present the following units: (1)an advanced unit on planets and space;(2) an intermediate uniton animals and their habitats; and (3) a primary uniton foods that grow. Each unit contains 8-12 lessons that target one or more content area, including language arts. The final chapter offers practical suggestions for integratiAg ESL students into the regularclassroom, including such techniques as classroom organization, silentperiods, classroom communication, treatment of errors, reading difficulties, and adaptation of instruction. -

“No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century by Kevin Woodger A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Kevin Woodger 2020 “No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century Kevin Woodger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto Abstract This dissertation examines the Canadian Cadet Movement and Boy Scouts Association of Canada, seeking to put Canada’s two largest uniformed youth movements for boys into sustained conversation. It does this in order to analyse the ways in which both movements sought to form masculine national and imperial subjects from their adolescent members. Between the end of the First World War and the late 1960s, the Cadets and Scouts shared a number of ideals that formed the basis of their similar, yet distinct, youth training programs. These ideals included loyalty and service, including military service, to the nation and Empire. The men that scouts and cadets were to grow up to become, as far as their adult leaders envisioned, would be disciplined and law-abiding citizens and workers, who would willingly and happily accept their place in Canadian society. However, these adult-led movements were not always successful in their shared mission of turning boys into their ideal-type of men. The active participation and complicity of their teenaged members, as peer leaders, disciplinary subjects, and as recipients of youth training, was central to their success. -
