This report is intended to offer advocates, activists, entertainment executives and creatives, media commenta- tors, and media literacy promoters a more holistic understanding of the popular media narratives currently influ- encing public attitudes and behaviors toward immigrants. This report also offers guidance and tips for improving the portrayal of immigrants in popular entertainment and best practices for using popular culture to advance a social justice cause and engage new audiences. Retrieved April 5, 2017. 5 DOMINANT STORYLINES AND THEMES ASSOCIATED WITH IMMIGRATION Storylines focused on historic immigration and European colonialism–dominant immigrant character representation: More than one-third of episodes featuring identifiable immigrant characters included an overarching storyline cen- tered on historical immigration, generally within the context of colonialism and imperialism. Historical dramas ac- counted for the majority of this category of storytelling. Storylines centered on historical immigration were almost exclusively tied to European nations’/ethnic groups’ exploration and colonization of territories around the globe, with several based loosely on real historical events. of immigrant characters were directly tied to some form of unlawful activity including 14% murder, human trafficking, and drug dealing. A significant portion of storylines tied to immigration or immigrants centered on unlawful activities: Storylines about unlawful activities accounted for 25 percent of storylines involving immigrant characters. These storylines depicted immigrant characters directly participating in unlawful activities or being questioned by police, often as a direct result of their status as an immigrant. Overall, 14 percent (10 of 70) of immigrant characters were directly tied to some form

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR IN FILM MUSIC: A SOCIOPHOBIC ANALYSIS OF ZOMBIE FILM SOUNDTRACKS Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Dr. Patrick Warfield, Musicology The horror film soundtrack is a complex web of narratological, ethnographic, and semiological factors all related to the social tensions intimated by a film. This study examines four major periods in the zombie’s film career—the Voodoo zombie of the 1930s and 1940s, the invasion narratives of the late 1960s, the post-apocalyptic survivalist fantasies of the 1970s and 1980s, and the modern post-9/11 zombie—to track how certain musical sounds and styles are indexed with the content of zombie films. Two main musical threads link the individual films’ characterization of the zombie and the setting: Othering via different types of musical exoticism, and the use of sonic excess to pronounce sociophobic themes.     VOTING FOR LOVE & JUSTICE WITH WONDER WOMAN FORWARD BY LYNDA CARTER Forty-five years ago, I was asked to bring one of my childhood heroes to life on screen. As a little girl growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, I would flip through the pages of Wonder Woman comics and find myself immersed in Diana Prince’s extraordinary adventures. For women and girls of my generation, Diana Prince was THE media representation we had in the world of fantasy and comics. It’s now hard to imagine a world without Dana Scully, Hermione Granger, or Princess Shuri, yet even in 1975, studio executives had little faith that a Wonder Woman TV show would attract an audience. Of course, they were proven wrong! I have been asked many times over the years why I think the character of Wonder Woman is such an enduring icon. While her superhuman strength, agility, and lasso of truth come to mind, I believe that the wisdom and humanity behind the character is why she will remain beloved for the ages. Diana Prince is an Amazonian princess, but in my portrayal I focused on everything that connected her to humanity. Diana’s love and empathy for the people around her empowers her to fight for love and justice at every turn. With kindness, she sets examples that change minds and hearts when you least expect it. Diana also brings intellect and wisdom to the table, reminding us that there’s nothing you can’t do with both a kind heart and a brilliant mind. Throughout her story, she is more than just a superhero in satin tights: she is everything from a devoted civil servant to a savvy businesswoman.
