WIND RIVER, WASHINGTON - DAY On screen it reads: "1988, WIND RIVER, DEER MEADOW, WASHINGTON" TERESA BANKS' body wrapped in plastic floating through Hells Canyon, drifting along in Wind River. On screen it reads: "TERESA BANKS" FADE OUT: FADE IN: EXT. FBI OFFICE IN PORTLAND Establish. INT. GORDON COLE'S OFFICE GORDON COLE talks on the speaker phone. COLE GET ME AGENT CHESTER DESMOND IN FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA. EXT. HIGHWAY, FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA - DAY A school bus. TWO very buxom PROSTITUTES are being handcuffed by a plain clothes special agent, CHESTER DESMOND. Another AGENT has his gun to the spread eagled BUS DRIVER's head. The KIDS inside the bus are screaming. The phone inside Chester Desmond's car starts to ring. Desmond walks to the car. INT. DESMOND'S CAR - DAY Desmond picks up the ringing phone. DESMOND Yes... INTERCUT WITH: COLE (CONTINUED) 2. CONTINUED: COLE Chet, I am alling you from Portland... Oregon. DESMOND OK, Gordon. COLE No, its Oregon, Portland, Oregon. It's Regional Bureau Chief Cole. Out in Portland Oregon. I need you out her Chet. DESMOND (little louder) OK, Gordon. COLE Oregon. A young girl has been murdered. Seventeen years old. Named Teresa Banks. DESMOND (very loud) Okay, Gordon!!! Desmond electronically lowers the aerial adjusting the volume. COLE Got a map of the Environs of the Yakima Indian Reservation with your name on it. Better bring a pole. DESMOND Smell something fishy, huh? COLE I've got a surprise for you, Chet. Something interesting. Arrangements are being made and I will meet you at the Portland, Airport. EXT. SMALL AIRPORT OUTSIDE OF PORTLAND - DAY Small government plane lands. ANOTHER ANGLE Desmond exits the plane. 3. INT. SECURITY LOUNGE OF THE AIRPORT - SAME Desmond enters. Cole and another man, SAM STANLEY, walk towards him. COLE (motioning to the man standing there) Chet, give Sam Stanley the glad hand. He's come over from Spokane. Desmond and Stanley shake. STANLEY It's a pleasure. I've heard a lot about you. COLE Sam's the man who cracked the Whiteman case. DESMOND Congratulations. I heard about that. COLE (plowing ahead) Your surprise, Chet. Her name if Lil. LIL walks to them from another room. She goes into a contorted dance. LIL'S DANCE Things we notice. -- She makes a sour face. -- She walks in place. -- She puts one hand in her pocket and makes a fist with the other. -- While she is doing this, she blinks with both eyes. -- She is wearing a red wig. At one point during this Cole adds a sentence. COLE She's my Mother's Sister's girl. Cole holds four fingers in front of his eyes. DESMOND (noticing the fingers) Federal? Cole gives him the thumbs up. Lil finishes her dance. (CONTINUED) 4. CONTINUED: COLE Good luck, Chet. (turns to Sam) Sam, you stick with Chet, he's got his own M.O. Modus Operandi. (back to Chet) You can reach me at the Philadelphia Offices. I am flying out today. DESMOND Right, Gordon. We'll be in touch. EXT. HIGHWAY ON THE WAY TO DEER MEADOW - DAY Desmond's car on the highway. INT. DESMOND'S CAR - SAME As they barrel down the highway - STANLEY That was really something. That dancing girl. (after a beat) What did it mean? DESMOND Code. If you work with Gordon you learn that right away. STANLEY Code, I've heard a lot about this. Desmond pulls his arm back so that only his fingers come out of his sleeve. DESMOND Sort of shorthand. STANLEY (missing the humor) Shorthand. really? DESMOND We're heading into a difficult situation. STANLEY How do you figure? DESMOND I'll explain it to you. Do you remember Lil's dance? (CONTINUED) 5. CONTINUED: As Desmond explains we - INTERCUT WITH: FLASHBACK: LIL'S DANCE In slow motion. ON LIL'S SOUR FACE DESMOND Lil was wearing a sour face. STANLEY What do you mean? DESMOND Her face had a sour look... that means we're going to have trouble with the local authorities. They are not going to be receptive to the FBI. ON LIL BLINKING BOTH EYES DESMOND Both eyes blinking means there is going to be trouble higher up... the eyes of the local authority. A sheriff and a deputy. That would be my guess. Two of the local law enforcers are going to be a problem. ON LIL PUTTING ONE HAND IN HER POCKET AND ONE IN A FIST DESMOND (CONTINUED) If you noticed she had one hand in her pocket which means they are hiding something, and the other hand made a fist which means they are going to be belligerent. ON LIL WALKING IN PLACE DESMOND (CONTINUED) Lil was walking in place which means there's going to be a lot of legwork involved. 6. WE SEE COLE PUTTING HIS FINGERS IN FRONT OF HIS FACE AND SAYING LIL IS HIS SISTER'S GIRL. DESMOND (CONTINUED) Cole said Lil was "his mother's sister's girl". What is missing in that sentence? The Uncle. STANLEY Oh, the uncle is missing. DESMOND Not Cole's Uncle but probably the sheriff's uncle in federal prison. STANLEY So the sheriff had got an Uncle who's committed a serious crime. ON LIL'S RED WIG DESMOND Right, which is probably why Lil was wearing a red wig meaning we are headed into a dangerous situation. Let me ask you something, Stanley, did you notice anything about the dress? STANLEY The dress she was wearing had been altered to fit her. I noticed a different colored thread where the dress had been taken in. It wasn't her dress or she must have lost some weight. DESMOND Gordon said you were good. The tailored dress is our code for drugs. Did you notice what was pinned to it? STANLEY A blue rose. DESMOND Very good, but I can't tell you about that. Stanley rides along quietly for a while. STANLEY What did Gordon's tie mean? (CONTINUED) 7. CONTINUED: DESMOND What? That's just Gordon's bad taste. STANLEY Why couldn't he have just told you all these things? DESMOND He talks loud. And he loves his code. STANLEY I see. He does talk loud. DESMOND Gordon would not have sent us to Deer Meadow without thinking it was a high priority situation. STANLEY It must be a high priority situation. EXT. HIGHWAY - SAME Desmond's car drives off. DISSOLVE TO: EXT. DEER MEADOW SHERIFF'S STATION - AFTERNOON Desmond and Stanley arrive. The Sheriff's Station is in a sorry state outside... They walk up to the old steps and enter. INT. DEER MEADOW SHERIFF'S STATION, RECEPTION AREA - DAY Agent Desmond and Stanley walk into a very small reception area. At the counter Desmond shows his badge to CLIFF HOWARD, the Deputy. DESMOND Good afternoon, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Special Agent Chet Desmond. I'd like to see Sheriff Cable. Cliff just smiles for a long minute. CLIFF Why don't you folks have a seat. Make yourself at home. It's gonna be a while. (CONTINUED) 8. CONTINUED: Desmond stays standing and Stanley sits. After another long moment, Cliff joins the SECRETARY in a conspiratorial giggle over the long wait they are planning to give the FBI. In the middle of a giggle Cliff smiles up at Desmond. CLIFF (CONTINUED) Why don't you have some of that coffee. It was fresh two days ago. Cliff has a good laugh over this and leans again over the secretary pretending to look at some paper work. They both laugh. DESMOND Okay, that's it. I've had enough of the waiting room now. CLIFF (still smiling) Oh. Desmond walks towards the door that obviously must go to Sheriff Cable's office. Cliff blocks his way with his arm across the doorway, daring him to do something. While they stare eye to eye, Desmond's hand goes up slowly towards Cliff's face in a slow mesmerizing way. Cliff tries to knock Chet's hand away. Chet counters by grabbing Cliff's nose and pinches a nerve to its side injecting Cliff with a great amount of pain. CLIFF (CONT'D) AAAHHHHHHHH... Desmond spins the deputy 180 degrees placing himself on the inside of the office and then still pressing the nerve guides Cliff down into a chair. While the Deputy's eyes tear copiously Desmond turns to the secretary. DESMOND You can start that FRESH pot of coffee right now. Desmond stalks to Sheriff Cable's office. Stanley remains behind continuing to observe every detail. INT. SHERIFF CABLE'S OFFICE - DAY SHERIFF CABLE looks up from his work. CABLE How the hell did you... (CONTINUED) 9. CONTINUED: Desmond shows his credentials. DESMOND Federal Bureau of Investigation, Special Agent Chet Desmond. Cliff, still holding his nose, appears just behind Desmond, who turns to him. DESMOND (CONT'D) That's all right, Deputy, Sheriff Cable can take it from here. (Cable signals Cliff to leave.) DESMOND (CONT'D) I'm here to investigate the murder of Teresa Banks. CABLE Well, little fella, we don't need any outside help here. I don't like you people sniffin' around my neck of the woods. In fact, when the state boys called me about a "J. Edgar" coming up I think I said, "So what?" DESMOND Your behavior is not funny and is wasting the time of the Federal Government.

COOPER Please. Sit down. AUDREY (unsure) I'm in a hurry. COOPER For what? She doesn't know what to say or do. So she offers a nervous shrug instead. 2. COOPER (CONT'D) Audrey, that perfume you're wearing is incredible. AUDREY Do you really think so? Cooper takes a pen from his pocket, hands it to her with a napkin. COOPER Write your name down for me. AUDREY (eager) Okay. She takes the pen and writes carefully, hands it back to Cooper. He looks at it. COOPER Audrey, there's something you'd like to tell me. AUDREY (blushing) There is? Beat. All she wants is to be close to him.

    Skyler Osburn “Lynch and Non-Lynch: A Cinematic Engagement with Process Philosophies East and West” English and Philosophy – Oklahoma State University Honors Thesis 1 Introduction I have envisioned what follows as, primarily, a work of comparative philosophy. My understanding of the sense of ‘philosophy’ extends beyond the accepted foundational works of logic, epistemology, and metaphysics, to include psychoanalytical frameworks, as well as aesthetic theories and their aesthetic objects. Whether thinking it or living it, and regardless of its particular effects, philosophy is a fundamentally creative endeavor, so artistic processes especially have a natural place alongside any mode of analytical reasoning. Given these premises, readers of this essay should not expect to find any thorough arguments as to why a given filmmaker might need to be approached philosophically. This project simply accepts that the filmmaker at hand does philosophy, and it intends to characterize said philosophy by explicating complementary figures and paradigms and then reading particular films accordingly. Furthermore, given the comparative nature of the overall project, it might be best to make an attempt at disposing of our presuppositions regarding the primacy of the argumentative as such. In what follows, there are certainly critical moments and movements; for instance, the essay’s very first section attempts to (briefly and incompletely) deconstruct Sartre’s dualistic ontology. Nevertheless, these negative interventions are incidental to a project which is meant to be primarily positive and serve as a speculatively affirmative account of David Lynch’s film- philosophical explorations. The essay that follows is split unevenly into two chapters or divisions, but the fundamental worldview developed throughout its course necessitates the equally fundamental interdependence of their specific conceptualizations.

In another part of the spacious room, the Horne family sits quietly around the dinner table. AUDREY HORNE plays listlessly with her food. COOPER Diane ... 6:18 a.m., room 315, Great Northern Hotel up here in Twin Peaks. Slept pretty well. Non- smoking room. No tobacco smell. That's a nice consideration for the business traveller. A hint of douglas fir needles in the air. As Sheriff Truman indicated they would, everything this hotel promised, they've delivered: clean, reasonably priced accomodations ... telephone works ... bathroom in really tip-top shape ... no drips, plenty of hot water with good, steady pressure ... could be a side- benefit of the waterfall just outside my window ... firm mattress, but not too firm ... and no lumps like that time I told you about down in El Paso ... Diane, what a nightmare that was, but of course you've heard me tell that story once or twice before. Haven't tried the television. Looks like cable, probably no reception problems. But the true test of any hotel, as you know, is that morning cup of coffee, which I'll be getting back to you about within the half hour ..

From the apocalyptic resonance of climate change and the drive to implement increasing powerful technologies into everyday life, to the hyperreality of a political and media landscape beset by chaos, there is the uneasy feeling that society, culture, and even consensual reality is beginning to experience signs of disintegration. What was considered the insanity of the margins is now experienced in the mainstream, and there is a growing feeling of wrongness, that the previous presumptions of the self, other, reality and knowledge are becoming untenable. This thesis undertakes a detailed examination of the weird and eerie as both an aesthetic register and as a critical tool in analysing the relationship between individuals and an impersonal modern society, where agency and intention is not solely the preserve of the human and there is a feeling not so much of being to act, and being acted upon. Using the definitions and characteristics of the weird and eerie provided by Mark Fisher’s critical text, The Weird and the Eerie, I set the weird and eerie in a historical context specifically regarding both the gothic, weird fiction and with the uncanny, I then analyse the presence of the weird and the eerie present in two cultural phenomena, the online phenomenon of the Slender Man, and J.G.

    “That Show You Like Might Be Coming Back in Style” 44 DOI: 10.1515/abcsj-2015-0003 “That Show You Like Might Be Coming Back in Style”: How Twin Peaks Changed the Face of Contemporary Television RALUCA MOLDOVAN Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca Abstract The present study revisits one of American television’s most famous and influential shows, Twin Peaks, which ran on ABC between 1990 and 1991. Its unique visual style, its haunting music, the idiosyncratic characters and the mix of mythical and supernatural elements made it the most talked-about TV series of the 1990s and generated numerous parodies and imitations. Twin Peaks was the brainchild of America’s probably least mainstream director, David Lynch, and Mark Frost, who was known to television audiences as one of the scriptwriters of the highly popular detective series Hill Street Blues. When Twin Peaks ended in 1991, the show’s severely diminished audience were left with one of most puzzling cliffhangers ever seen on television, but the announcement made by Lynch and Frost in October 2014, that the show would return with nine fresh episodes premiering on Showtime in 2016, quickly went viral and revived interest in Twin Peaks’ distinctive world. In what follows, I intend to discuss the reasons why Twin Peaks was considered a highly original work, well ahead of its time, and how much the show was indebted to the legacy of classic American film noir; finally, I advance a few speculations about the possible plotlines the series might explore upon its return to the small screen.     IN FOCUS: Returning to the Red Room—Twin Peaks at Twenty-Five Foreword by DAVID LAVERY or Twin Peaks (ABC, 1990–1991), 2015 was a damn fine year. The last annum has seen the completion of a new collection of critical essays ( Jeffrey Weinstock and Catherine Spooner’s Return to “Twin Peaks”: New Approaches to Theory & Genre in Television), an international conference in the United Kingdom (“ ‛I’ll See You Again Fin 25 Years’: The Return of Twin Peaks and Generations of Cult TV” at the University of Salford), and the current In Focus.1 Not coincidently, this has transpired alongside the commissioning of the return of the series on the American premium cable channel Showtime for a 2017 debut. Long before this Twin Peaks renaissance, the place of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s “quirky quality” series in TV history was, however, already secure.2 As the creator of the iconic series Mad Men, Matthew Weiner, now fifty years old, put it definitively: “I was already out of college when Twin Peaks came on, and that was where I became aware of what was possible on television.”3 Twin Peaks has played a central role as well in our understanding of what is possible in television studies.
