  • Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group
HISTORICAL MATERIALS IN THE DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER LIBRARY OF INTEREST TO THE NAZI WAR CRIMES AND JAPANESE IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT RECORDS INTERAGENCY WORKING GROUP The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library holds a large quantity of documentation relating to World War II and to the Cold War era. Information relating to war crimes committed by Nazi Germany and by the Japanese Government during World War II can be found widely scattered within the Library’s holdings. The Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group is mandated to identify, locate and, as necessary, declassify records pertaining to war crimes committed by Nazi Germany and Japan. In order to assist the Interagency Working Group in carrying out this mission, the Library staff endeavored to identify historical documentation within its holdings relating to this topic. The staff conducted its search as broadly and as thoroughly as staff time, resources, and intellectual control allowed and prepared this guide to assist interested members of the public in conducting research on documents relating generally to Nazi and Japanese war crimes. The search covered post- war references to such crimes, the use of individuals who may have been involved in such crimes for intelligence or other purposes, and the handling of captured enemy assets. Therefore, while much of the documentation described herein was originated during the years when the United States was involved in World War II (1939 to 1945) one marginal document originated prior to this period can be found and numerous post-war items are also covered, especially materials concerning United States handling of captured German and Japanese assets and correspondence relating to clemency for Japanese soldiers convicted and imprisoned for war crimes.

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS Filed August l3, 2010 PROVIDENCE, SC. SUPERIOR COURT FREDERICK N. LEVINGER : : C.A. No. PB 09-3687 V. : : PROVIDENCE WATCH HOSPITAL, : LLC : Consolidated with FREDERICK N. LEVINGER : : C.A. No. PB 09-3688 V. : : SPEIDEL, LLC : DECISION SILVERSTEIN, J. Before the Court is a motion brought by Cerce Capital, LLC (Cerce) requesting that Jeffrey Massotti (Massotti) and Peter Cipolla (Cipolla) be held in contempt of the orders which appointed Allan Shine as the Temporary Receiver of Speidel, LLC (Speidel) on June 26, 2009 and Permanent Receiver on July 16, 2009. The Movant, Cerce, alleges that Massotti and Cipolla solicited Speidel customers, interfered with ongoing contracts, and took critical data and information; actions which Cerce argues are prohibited by the orders in the instant matter. Massotti and Cipolla object to Cerce’s Motion to Adjudge in Contempt, arguing that there is no evidence that they took any property of Speidel after receiving notice of the receivership. 1 I Facts and Travel Speidel, founded in 1904, was originally operated as a jewelry chain manufacturer in Providence, Rhode Island. Speidel became a watch band distributor and was owned by Frederick N. Levinger. Speidel also owned Providence Watch Hospital, LLC (PWH), a watch repair and sales business with retail shops in Providence, Cranston and Wakefield. Allan M. Shine (the Receiver) was appointed by this Court as Temporary Receiver of Speidel and PWH on June 26, 2009 and Permanent Receiver on July 16, 2009 (collectively, the Orders). 1 On August 14, 2009, the Court approved an offer by Cerce to purchase all tangible and intangible personal property of Speidel.

  • Final Report NATO Research Fellowship Prof. Dr. Holger H
Final Report NATO Research Fellowship Prof. Dr. Holger H. Herwig The University of Calgary Aggression Contained? The Federal Republic of Germany and International Security1 Two years ago, when I first proposed this topic, I had some trepidation about its relevance to current NATO policy. Forty-eight months of work on the topic and the rush of events especially in Central and East Europe since that time have convinced me both of its timeliness and of its relevance. Germany's role in SFOR in Bosnia since 1996, the very positive deployment of the German Army (Bundeswehr) in flood-relief work along the Oder River on the German- Polish border in the summer of 1997, and even the most recent revelations of neo-Nazi activity within the ranks of the Bundeswehr, have served only to whet my appetite for the project. For, I remain convinced that the German armed forces, more than any other, can be understood only in terms of Germany's recent past and the special military culture out of which the Bundeswehr was forged. Introduction The original proposal began with a scenario that had taken place in Paris in 1994. On that 14 July, the day that France annually sets aside as a national holiday to mark its 1789 Revolution, 189 German soldiers of the 294th Tank-Grenadier Battalion along with their twenty- four iron-crossed armoured personnel carriers for the first time since 1940 had marched down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. General Helmut Willmann's men had stepped out not to the tune of "Deutschland, 1 The research for this report was made possible by a NATO Research Fellowship.

  • Speidel (2018) – Africa's Population Challenge
AFRICA’S POPULATION CHALLENGE J. Joseph Speidel MD, MPH Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, University of California, San Francisco, 3333 California Street, Suite 335, Box 0744, San Francisco, CA 94118 [email protected] August 8, 2018 “Perhaps the greatest threat to Africa’s peace and security is the very rapid rate of population growth.” ––John Dramani Mahama, former president of Ghana, April 20, 2018 Introduction: Africa has enormous potential but at the same time is facing unprecedented and dire threats to its prospects for a peaceful and prosperous future. Although there is considerable variation in the status of family planning and population growth rates among African countries, predominant among Africa’s challenges is extremely rapid population growth. This is holding back desperately needed social and economic progress in most of the more than 50 countries in Africa. Africa’s problems include extreme poverty, inadequate infrastructure, weak governments and institutions, over exploitation and degradation of natural resources, food insecurity, insufficient energy resources and lack of basic services. These difficulties threaten the region’s ecosystem integrity and hamper economic development. Continuing rapid population growth and climate change will place additional pressure on the natural resource base of the region with heat waves and water shortages causing serious impacts on the rain-fed agriculture that most Africans rely on for food. Over the 20th century, the population of sub-Saharan Africa increased an amazing seven-fold. In 1950, the population of Africa was 229 million, by 2017 it had increased to 1.26 billion and is projected to double to 2.53 billion in just the 32 years to 2050––and possibly higher if projected declines in birth rates do not occur.

  • A Study on East Asian Influence on Modern Architecture in Europe
ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH, Vol. 11, No. 2(December 2009), pp.9-18 Cross-Current Contribution : A Study on East Asian Influence on Modern Architecture in Europe Hyon-Sob Kim Department of Architecture, Korea University, Seoul, Korea Abstract This research started from the premise that East Asia – China, Korea and Japan – played a remarkable role in the development of modern architecture. In this study, attention is paid to the lack of a synthetic research about the influence of East Asia on European modernism as a counterpart to its influence on American modernism. Thus, the intention of this paper is to construct an integrated discourse on the East Asian contribution to European modern architecture. By analyzing recently published/presented articles on the related subjects, this study suggests how European modernists encountered the East, what attracted them to the East, and how they applied East Asian aesthetics in their designs. While a number of architects adopted East Asian formal elements directly, at times superficially, others extracted the underlying principles. As a whole, this analysis offers insights at several levels. First, it provides a balance to the view of the East Asian influence on modern architec- ture by providing an investigation into its influence on European modernism as a counterpart to its influence on American modernism. Second, the multi-faceted nature of modern architecture is further illuminated in this study. Third, an important example of “positive-Orientalism” is pro- vided, which contrasts with the rather negative image implied by E. Said’s ‘Orientalism’. In conclusion, this paper provides a critical assess- ment of the fundamental motive of European modernists’ adoption of East Asian aesthetics.

  • Nature's Muses in Bruno Tuat's Glashaus
Design and Nature VI 49 Nature’s muses in Bruno Tuat’s Glashaus D. Nielsen & A. Kumarasuriyar Queensland University of Technology, Australia Abstract Constructed for the 1914 Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne, Germany, the Glashaus was both a seminal example of early modernist architecture and Bruno Taut’s signature building. Over time, metaphors have come to be applied to the Glashaus. Within the realm of nature these metaphors include cosmic, geological, botanic and sexual. However these metaphors, like the history of the Glashaus, are not a foregone conclusion. Recently it has been argued that the majority of our current knowledge regarding the Glashaus derives not from the perspective of Bruno Taut as the architect, but rather directly from the perspective of the art critic Adolf Behne. This argument goes further and proposes that Behne’s official history of Glashaus is possibly fabricated propaganda. So, if indeed the official history of the Glashaus is questionable, then too are the natural metaphors commonly applied to the building. By revisiting Bruno Taut’s pre-1915 writings, this investigation reveals that botanic metaphors appear to have been Taut’s primary source of inspiration for the design of the Glashaus. Through the exposure of this fact, this research contributes significantly to the current debates surrounding Bruno Taut, the Glashaus and the re-evaluation of the official histories of the modern movement. Keywords: Bruno Taut, Glashaus, nature, gothic, Victoria regia, Stiftskirche. 1 Introduction References to nature are common-place in descriptions of Bruno Taut’s Glashaus (Figure 1). It has been proposed that the Glashaus looked like the earth had literally broken open, exposing the building as it erupted toward the light.

Despite the inherently immobile status of archi- tecture, architectural ideas travel widely, as well as their conceivers, the architects. The cultural passage implicit to translation is never flawless, though. Hyuga Villa offers a good case in point, since it was conceived by an architect who had only a partial grasp of local culture and who tried to integrate elements of both Western and Japanese design. But what are the implications of ‘translating’ architecture? Can we translate not only words but also images, details, building conventions, even aesthetic sensitivities? And is everything translatable? Applied to an artifact recognised today as an important testimony to the encounter between Western and Eastern design cultures, these questions relate to issues that are central to the debate on both architectural history and built heritage, proposing an alternative approach in terms of method and scope. KEYWORDS cultural translation, Bruno Taut, Japan, Hyuga Villa, emigration, professional mobility, European archi- tecture, Asian architecture, heritage Received May 1, 2018; accepted May 22, 2018.

Information relating to war crimes committed by Nazi Germany and by the Japanese Government during World War II can be found widely scattered within the Library's holdings.
