The materials offer an historical framework for considering current events, as well as some insight into the events, ideas, issues, and personalities that have propelled Poland's successful movement towards democracy. A timeline and maps are included to give a basic historical context. Editorial cartoons, a resource guide, and suggested classroom activities also are included. The three maps included are:(1) central Europe, pre-World War I;(2) central Europe, post-World War II; and (3) Poland's shifting frontiers. The timeline stretches from 966 AD to 1991. Readings, grouped in five sections are:(1) a short history "The People Versus the Party" (Leopold Ungr);(2) excerpts from two Histories on Solidarity: "The Polish Revolution: Solidarity" (Timothy Garton Ash) and "Heart of Europe: A Short History of Poland" (Norman Davies);(3) four Notes from the Underground from 1982; (4) Voices: "The Books of the Polish Nation" by national poet Adam Mickiewicz, "Poem for Adults" (Adam Wazyk), "If You Insist of Screaming Do It Quietly" and "Write Legibly" (Stanislaw Baranczak) and "Report from the Besieged City" (Zbignew Herbert);(5) Change is Comprised of five articles dealing with the internal forces that make change possible: "A Nego.iated Settlement" (Jackson Diehl, "The Polish Kakeidoscope of 1989," in "Captive Minds: A Journal of Information and Opinion on Eastern Europe," "The Age of Solidarity" (Adrian Karatnycky), "Missing the Vote" (Maria Balinska), and "Polish Politics: Wale.a Runs for President (Adrian Karatnycky). TIMELINE 966 Prince Mieszko converts to Roman Catholicism and establishes Poland as a Christian Kingdom in the heart of Eastern Europe. An established community of Polish-Jews already exists and continues to grow throughout the centuries. 1308 The Germanic Teutonic Knights, invited into the Polish-ruled lands along the Baltic Sea to pacify and convert the pagan population, conquer and seize the territory. The Baltic inhabitants -- Prussians -- are quickly decimated and replaced by a Germanic population who are also called "Prussians." Periodic battles between the Poles and the Teutonic Order continue for several centuries. 1386 Wladyslaw Jagiello, Grand Duke of Lithuania, converts to Christianity to marry Jadwiga, Queen of Poland, thus uniting the two nations. 1573 The Polish nobility are among the first in Europe to establish limitations on the power of the monarchy. From 1573 to 1764, the nobility (10% of the population) elects Polish kings through the Parliament (Sejm). 1655 Sweden invades Poland and captures the capital and half of the country's territory. The Swedes are turned back at the monastery of Czestochowa, turning the tide of the war. "The Black Madonna," the icon of the monastery, is credited with the victory and thereafter becomes a national shrine. 1677 One of several Polish-Russian wars comes to an end; Poland's frontiers shift to the west. 5 1674 Jan III Sobieski is elected king. In1683,he becomes a hero throughout Europe by his daring rescue of Vienna from the advancing Ottoman Empire. 1791 For several years, Poland is beset by internal instability. On May 3, 1791, in a last attempt to protect itself from its powerful neighbors, Poland adopts a democratic constitution. It is the second country, after the United States, to do so. 1793-95 The three great empires that surround Poland -- Russia, Prussia, and Austria-- continue to encroach on Polish sovereignty. Through a 1772 treaty, known as "the first partition," Poland had already lost 20% of its population and 25% of its territory.In 1793 and 1795, the second and third partitions completely erase Poland as an independent nation. The Poles become a subject people of the three empires. 1807 Napoleon of France defeats the Prussian Empire and creates the Grand Duchy of Warsaw from Prussian-occupied Poland. Krakow and western Galicia are added in 1809 after his defeat of the Austrian Empire.

Wybory parlamentarne niemal sąsiadu- jące w kalendarzu z wyborami prezydenckimi powodują, że od wielu tygodni jesteśmy bombardowani informacjami kampanii wyborczych i komentarzami dziennikarzy. Uodpor- nienie społeczeństwa na ten atak jest duże, a wiara w możliwość realnego wpływu na rzeczywistość polityczną – mała. Stąd niska frekwencja wyborcza. Zawodowe firmy badania opinii publicznej publikują nie tylko wyniki prostych sondaży, lecz także wyniki w przekrojach grup zawodowych, miejsc zamieszkania, wieku itp. Wiele tygodników drukuje swoiste ściągi dla wyborców, które w schematyczny sposób starają się przedstawić i porównać programy wyborcze partii. Wreszcie dzień sądu nadchodzi i wyborcy udają się do urn (niestety nie wszyscy). Wyniki głosowania często nie pokrywają się z wynikami badań sondażowych, nawet tych przeprowadzanych wśród osób wychodzących z lokali wyborczych. Dobrze udokumentowane jest zjawisko wstydu, polegające na tym, że respon- dent wstydzi się przyznać ankieterowi, że głosował na ugrupowanie, które w jakiś sposób jest napiętnowane w środkach komunikacji masowej lub opinii publicznej. W tej prezentacji przedstawione będą wyniki analiz statystycznych wykorzystujący niemal wyłącznie wyniki wyborów wyrażone liczbą (i procentem) głosów. Nie ma w nich znacze- nia, co głosi się w kampaniach wyborczych, jakie są wyniki sondaży, co wynika z socjolo- gicznych badań elektoratu, itp. – liczą się tylko surowe liczby, opinie wyrażone „nogami”, czy raczej kartką wyborczą. Metody statystyczne Dane statystyczne pochodzą z oficjalnych komunikatów Państwowej Komisji Wyborczej. Podstawowym pomysłem badawczym jest wykorzystanie danych wojewódzkich (mogą to być również dane na poziomie innych jednostek administracyjnych).

On 3 April in Brest on the Bug River, Stanisław Kania and Wojciech Jaruzelski met with Soviet leaders to discuss the situation. "We are all very concerned about further developments in Poland," said Leonid Brezhnev in early April. The Kremlin dignitaries made it clear to the Polish Party leaders that they expected them to act quickly and decisively against the opposition and "Solidarity". The Kremlin is not glad The spring of 1981 was a period of turbulence for the Polish communists. From 16 March, Poland held military exercises of the Warsaw Pact forces, codenamed "Soyuz 81", and the threat of strikes triggered by "Solidarity" in the wake of the Bydgoszcz provocation had not yet subsided. On 30 March 1981, the authorities concluded a compromise with the "Solidarity" leadership. The trade union dismissed the idea of general strike, and in return was authorised i.a. to legalise the founding committees of rural “Solidarity” and given promises - never kept – that the state would investigate the events that took place on 19 March in Bydgoszcz and draft a law on trade unions. The leadership of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was not satisfied with such an agreement. The "Polish" topic was raised on 2 April 1981 during the meeting of the Politburo of the Soviet Communist Party.

    Europe | July 13, 2020 POLAND: Duda’s victory paves the way for PiS rule until 2023 According to preliminary data from the National Electoral Commission (PKW), incumbent President Andrzej Duda – supported by the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party – narrowly won the second round of the presidential election held on 12 July. With nearly all ballots counted, Duda secured 51.2% of votes, leaving his opponent Rafal Trzaskowski (Civic Platform, PO) behind with 48.8%. The fiercely contested presidential race attracted a nearly record turnout of 68.1%. The PKW is expected to announce the official results within few days. Trzaskowski has not accepted defeat yet and could still challenge the result in courts, although this appears unlikely. An extremely divisive electoral campaign and a tight result reveal the deep polarization of Poland’s society. Exit polls show that Duda was predominantly supported by farmers, senior citizens, blue-collar workers, and the unemployed based in smaller towns and villages in the eastern parts of the country. Meanwhile, Trzaskowski performed well among students and entrepreneurs, as well as highly-qualified professionals. He is also much more popular in large cities and the western parts of the country. Duda’s re-election is a major win for the ruling PiS, which is now relatively well-positioned to continue carrying out its policy agenda until the parliamentary election in the autumn of 2023. In terms of the government’s policy priorities going forward, justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro (United Poland) has highlighted that it would further reform state institutions – including the judiciary – and continue implementing its generous social policies.

    — SPECIAL REPORT — 11/05/2019 POLAND’S 2019 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION Tomasz Grzegorz Grosse Warsaw Institute POLAND’S 2019 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION Held on October 13, 2019, Poland’s general election is first and foremost a success of democracy, as exemplified by crowds rushing to polling stations and a massive rise in voter turnout. Those that claimed victory were the govern- ment groups that attracted a considerable electorate, winning in more constitu- encies across the country they ruled for the past four years. Opposition parties have earned a majority in the Senate, the upper house of the Polish parliament. A fierce political clash turned into deep chasms throughout the country, and Poland’s political stage reveals polarization between voters that lend support to the incumbent government and those that question the authorities by manifest- ing either left-liberal or far-right sentiments. Introduction Jane Leftwich Curry he political history of Poland since World War II and the Communist takeover has been one in which crisis followed crisis. Even when there Twas more than a decade before the next crisis, "normalcy" was never fully "normal." Instead, the institutions and their responses were structured by the previous crisis and constantly shaded by storm clouds for the next. In 1956, 1970, and 1980, Poles successfully "voted with their feet" and ousted their lead­ ers. In 1968 and 1976, the crises were less systemic: specific groups revolted over specific policies. As a result, even though Wladyslaw Gomulka in 1968 and Edward Gierek in 1976 retained their leadership for a while, the system was weakened and put on the defensive, so that it fell quickly when Poles returned to the streets in 1970 and 1980.
