After the 1st General Assembly held in Paris, cartograph- ers of the World are going to meet again in the capital of France. It is quite common to organize events (seminars, joint meetings, workshops) that are connected to the main conference. In 2005, before the XXIIIrd Interna- tional Cartography Conference in A Coruña (Spain), five ICA Commissions met in Madrid to have a Joint ICA Seminar. This year, almost the same commissions and a working group organized a similar symposium at the University of Orléans. The participants are Commission on Cartography and Children, Commission on Education and Training, Commission on Maps and the Internet, Commission on Planetary Cartography and Working Group on Cartography on Early Warn- ing and Crisis Management. The submitted papers from all participating commis- sions were considered equal; organizers did not intend to emphasize specific top- ics. This is the reason why a short title was selected for the event: “Maps for the Fu- ture”. The papers of this symposium deal with a wide range of cartography. The topic of most papers was not directly related to certain commissions, but they were in- terdisciplinary. This makes these joint seminars, symposiums worthwhile: present- ing new ideas to the participants and helping us to follow the development of our science. Organizing a symposium is not just collecting abstracts and papers and pub- lishing them on CD-ROM and later in the Proceedings. The most difficult and time-consuming task is to organize the event itself (including all logistic elements: accommodation, meeting place etc.). A small group of people from the University of Orléans undertook this busy job to host more than 50 participants during the symposium. Many thanks for their efforts that let us realize this meeting here, in Orléans. The diversity of research topics being developed by the members of the ICA commissions and working groups all over the world is clearly demonstrated in the papers to be presented during these two days and in the proceedings published digitally. Organizers would like to thank the commission chairs for their support and ac- tive collaboration. We also thank the support of the ICA Executive Committee for their participation either as authors or as just visitors.     Chapter 3 Current Trends in Vector-Based Internet Mapping: A Technical Review Christophe Lienert, Bernhard Jenny, Olaf Schnabel, and Lorenz Hurni Abstract Possibilities and limitations of Internet cartography software largely depend on the pace set by the software industry. The variety of commercial and non-commercial software caters for the needs of a continuously growing mapping community, including both professional and amateur cartographers. This chapter provides an overview of state-of-the-art technologies for vector-based Web- mapping as of the beginning of 2011. Both proprietary and open format technologies are discussed for vector data rendering in browsers, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. The discussed technologies are Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), JavaFX, Canvas, and WebGL. The chapter also discusses client and server side frameworks which provide Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for creating custom interactive maps, mainly by overlaying raster images with vector data. 3.1 Introduction Internet maps are the major form of spatial information delivery, as the Internet is today the primary medium for the transmission and dissemination of maps (Peterson 2008). For map authors, the maze of available techniques for creating and distributing Web maps is overwhelming, while authoring tools for Web-maps meeting the demands of high-quality cartography are difficult to find. Map authors may choose between GIS and graphics software products to create maps for the Internet, but these off-the-shelve maps oftentimes fall short of effectively convey- ing information. There are three main reasons for this shortcoming: (a) the design of these maps sometimes does not take into account the specific limitations of digital displays (Jenny et al., 2008); (b) the maps are often restricted in using standard C.

    Wl^liii Number 4 December 1966 Volume 5 THE CASES OF THE "DIRTY DOZEN" - Harold Wasserman - Case 5: The Case of the "Star-Cross'd Lovers" For Case 5 we are taking a few poetic liberties with our title. If you recall your high school Shakespeare, perhaps you will recall the Prologue to "Romeo and Juliet", in which Shakespeare refers to "A pair of star-cross'd lovers" and ends it with "The which if you with patient ears attend, What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend". Case 5 will not bring up the mysteries of love potions; however, it most definitely will bring up a few mysteries surrounding a pair of stars and crosses on a famous set of sport stamps. I would imagine that almost all collectors of sports stamps are acquainted with the two sets of stamps which Uruguay issued in 1924 and 1928 to celebrate the soccer victories in the Olympic Games of those years. I wonder how many know that the second set (1928) was also issued for official use. Unfortunately, "Scott" has only this note at the end of Its listing of Uruguay officials: "Since 1928, instead of official stamps, Uruguay has used envelopes with "S.O." printed on them and stamps of many issued which are punched with various designs such as star or crescent". It is also unfortunate that many collectors probably do not possess a "Landmans" which il­ lustrates these punches. The first type is a five-pointed star. The second is commonly referred to as a Maltese cross, although technically it probably resembles a pattee cross more than a Maltese cross.

Αντικείμενο της Εργασίας ήταν η δημιουργία ενός ΢χεδιαστή Σαξιδιών Με Μέσα Μαζικής Μεταφοράς (Intermodal Journey Planner), που να απευθύνεται κατά κύριο λόγο στους επισκέπτες της πόλης. Για τον λόγο αυτό η σχετική εφαρμογή σχεδιάστηκε ώστε να είναι αρκετά απλή στην χρήση και να μπορεί να δίνει με λίγα βήματα και γρήγορα μια πολύ καλή καθοδήγηση, ενώ ως γλώσσα του περιβάλλοντος χρήσης επιλέχθηκε η Αγγλική. Η εφαρμογή παρέχεται μέσω ενός web interface και στηρίζεται σε open source λογισμικά. Η δημιουργία της στάθηκε ως πλαίσιο για την απόκτηση γνώσης σχετικά με την γλώσσα προγραμματισμού Java, την δημιουργία web sites και εφαρμογών, την πλοήγηση με χρήση γράφων, όπως επίσης και με την λογική της ανάπτυξης λογισμικού ανοικτού κώδικα και των μεθοδολογιών λειτουργίας μιας κοινότητας ανάπτυξης τέτοιου λογισμικού.

Analysed platforms are Adobe AIR using applications built in Adobe Flex and Microsoft Silverlight. Secondary aim of this work is demonstration of capabilities offered by AIR framework and comparison of AIR applica- tions to solutions based on JavaScript. To compare and analyse various platforms, a comparison or benchmarking method is required, but unluckily no relevant methods exist. This work proposes a benchmarking method that allows complex comparison of this type of platforms. Method is based on gen- eral requirements of users and developers.
