Special Olympics Southern California To our fans,

2011 was a year of economic rebuilding, stabilizing our organization and preparing a brand new strategic plan aligning Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) with the Special Olympics global movement. We finished the year with a balanced budget. We continued building our Fall Games championship, while reaching out to more athletes with intellectual disabilities than ever before. In addition, we began focusing on the Young Athletes Program, while also continuing to grow our School Partnership Program as we prepare to increase our athlete participation numbers in a variety of creative ways.

We conducted even more sporting events and fundraising efforts, hoping to touch more lives through the power of sports in 2011. None of this success would have been possible without the incredible dedication of our athletes, Board of Directors, volunteers, donors, family members and staff. We are truly an organization offering training for life as we also focused efforts “off the playing field” on our Healthy Athletes Program and Athlete Leadership Program.

Looking ahead, 2012 will only bring more fun as the excitement stirs for the arrival of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, hosted right in our own backyard of . Stay tuned as opportunities are unveiled to become involved. We congratulate you all on bringing out the champion in all of us!

“It helps me in my job because I have learned to be a better team player.”

Well-Being index

SOSC’s former Strategic Plan called for the creation of a Well-Being index, a research survey of athletes with data that measures the relevance and value of SOSC programs. This data would help demonstrate how Special Olympics changes lives and provide information and feedback for managing the effectiveness of our program. it would also improve SOSC’s ability to attract sponsors and foundations, as well as to create partnerships with groups and individuals.

in 2011 the project pilot was completed and the overarching findings reported by UCLA School of Public Health concluded from the sample: • 30% of our athletes either volunteer, participate in vocational programs or have paid jobs • 30% of athletes were underweight, 30% normal weight, 21% overweight, 19% obese • #1 reason athletes sited for involvement with Special Olympics = Friendship and happiness • 76% have access to health insurance and healthcare • “...these athletes are benefiting from their engagement in Special Olympics on a number of levels. They are reporting that their physical health, emotional health, family life, and friendships have all benefited because of their participation. In addition, this program has helped them at work and school and they are very positive about the quality of the program and the coaching.”

Thank you to the project team who helped over the past 3 years: • Boeing - for investing in the development of the Well-Being index, and to Board member Frederica Weimer, former Boeing employee and Board Member Dave Bowman and Kevin Ober • Board member Jerry Hime and former Board member Dr. mike morrison • Volunteer team members: Dr. Pat Lynch, Dr. Wendy Krieger, Tina Thompson, student interviewers from UCi in Orange County and coaches in Santa Clarita and Westview Services • UCLA-School of Public Health: Drs. mike Prelip, Deborah Glik and their doctoral student Anna Liza Antonio • Staff team members: Bill Shumard, margie Cate, Jan Palchikoff, Jan melnyk, Kelly Pond, Laura Seckel, Laura mayo-Blunt, David Armendariz, Beckie White, monica mcDade and former staff member Kim Pine-Evans 2011 Special Olympics World Games
