Languages and Early Migration “Language Resources,” Cambridge University Press website Prologue This introduction to languages and early migration is reproduced from the online Language Resources that I created, linked to the website for my book, A History of Humanity. The main essay provides basic definitions on language, then summarizes language-group distribution, history, and debates, concluding with language spreadsheets and references. An example of phylum-level details is shown for Amerind, the original languages of North ands South America. Essay The purpose of this online resource collection is to interpret the place of language in human history. In a simplified presentation of a complex issue, this Introduction begins with concise definitions and descriptions. It traces the logical order of language divergence and displays the major phyla or families going back more than 15,000 years. After summarizing the history of language divergence and movement in six periods, we turn to the problems and debates in language history. These include the effects of “language overlays” as one replaces another, efforts to define “macro-phyla” for very early times, and early maritime migrations. The accompanying files for 14 individual phyla provide descriptions of each Homeland, language migrations over time, maps (which are also available as separate image files), concise spreadsheets showing major subgroups in each phylum, and citations of works on each phylum. In a separate Excel file, the 14 individual sheets each give a restatement of the concise spreadsheet at top and, below, a full spreadsheet showing many of the languages in each phylum. Definitions The elements of language, as understood by linguists, include lexicon (the meanings of words), morphology (the pieces of words and how they are fit together), phonology (the sounds made in any language), and syntax (the organization of lexicon, morphology, and phonology into meaningful sentences). -

Hungarian Prehistory Series
Hungarian Prehistory Series The Hungarians moved to their later homeland, the Carpathian basin at the end of the ninth century. Prior to this period they lived in the western part of the southern Russian steppe as vassals of the Khazar Kaghanate. The ethnic envi- ronment of the Kaghanate had a great impact on the ethnogenesis of the Hun- garians as testified by the numerous Turkic and Iranian loan words as well as the art, the military and the political structure of the Hungarians in the period of the conquest. Therefore, from the point of view of Hungarian prehistory, it is crucial to be familiar with the history of the nomadic peoples, that is, with the "oriental background." The Hungarian Prehistory Series, launched in 1990, aimed to pub- lish source editions, collected papers and monographs in connection with the history of the Eurasian steppe. It includes historical, linguistical and archaeologi- cal studies. The Department of Medieval World History (University of Szeged) has played an active role in the publication of the series since 1994. B. the Program in Uralic and Altaic Studies Originated During the Academic Year
B. The Program in Uralic and Altaic Studies originated during the academic year 1960-1961, when it was known as a Comittee on Uralic and Altaic Studies. In the academic year 1961-1962 ta Jt it was transformed into a Program which then dealt, mainly with Uralic Studies - Finnish and Hungarian language and area studies. As it expanded a more complete range of courses in Uralic and Altaic Language and Area Studies were offered, and to-day the Program is probably the most comprehensive of its kind in the United States, and enjoys a world-wide reputation. Uralic and Altaic Studies is a relatively unconventional field of study concerned with an area that plays an increasing role in world affairs and embarces a great part of the Eurasian Continent. It compriaes a field of study which has hitherto been neglected in the United States. This Program now provides the much needed research facilities for graduate and doctoral students which enables them to become specialized in this field, and meets the growing need for specialists and academicians in this area. The Program offers a degree of Mafter of Arts with specialization in either Uralic or Altaic Studies. An Independent doctoral Program in Uralic and Altaic will be established during the course of the coming year. In the meantime, candidates for the Ph.D. degree present their specialization in Uralic or Altaic Studies to the curricular unit appropriate to the student' a major interest, such as linguistics, history, Asian Studies, folklore, etc. Apart from these above mentioned degrees, the Program also offers a Certificate in Hungarian Studies which is designed to stimulate interest and specialization among students who would already have accumulated some of the requirements towards unkhux another degree. -

The Finnish Korean Connection: An Initial Analysis J ulian Hadland It has traditionally been accepted in circles of comparative linguistics that Finnish is related to Hungarian, and that Korean is related to Mongolian, Tungus, Turkish and other Turkic languages. N.A. Baskakov, in his research into Altaic languages categorised Finnish as belonging to the Uralic family of languages, and Korean as a member of the Altaic family. Yet there is evidence to suggest that Finnish is closer to Korean than to Hungarian, and that likewise Korean is closer to Finnish than to Turkic languages . In his analytic work, "The Altaic Family of Languages", there is strong evidence to suggest that Mongolian, Turkic and Manchurian are closely related, yet in his illustrative examples he is only able to cite SIX cases where Korean bears any resemblance to these languages, and several of these examples are not well-supported. It was only in 1927 that Korean was incorporated into the Altaic family of languages (E.D. Polivanov) . Moreover, as Baskakov points out, "the Japanese-Korean branch appeared, according to (linguistic) scien tists, as a result of mixing altaic dialects with the neighbouring non-altaic languages". For this reason many researchers exclude Korean and Japanese from the Altaic family. However, the question is, what linguistic group did those "non-altaic" languages belong to? If one is familiar with the migrations of tribes, and even nations in the first five centuries AD, one will know that the Finnish (and Ugric) tribes entered the areas of Eastern Europe across the Siberian plane and the Volga. -

This situation has made the search for a single Austro-Hungarian identity so difficult that many historians have declared it impossible. Yet the Dual Monarchy possessed one potentially unifying cultural aspect that has long been critically neglected: the extensive repertoire of marches and patriotic music performed by the military bands of the Imperial and Royal Austro- Hungarian Army. This Militärmusik actively blended idioms representing the various nationalist musics from around the empire in an attempt to reflect and even celebrate its multinational makeup. -

Finnish and Hungarian

We explain the status of Finnish and Hungarian at University College London and in the UK, and present the principle difficulties in learning and teaching these two languages. We also introduce our courses and student profiles. With the support of examples from our own teaching, we argue that a linguistically oriented approach is well suited for less widely used and less taught languages as it enables students to draw comparative and historical parallels, question terminologies and raise their sociolinguistic and pragmatic awareness. A linguistic approach also provides students with skills for further language learning. Introduction The purpose of our paper is to explore the role of different sub-disciplines of linguistics in language teaching, in particular, their role in the teaching of less widely used and less taught (LWULT) languages. More specifically, we argue that a linguistic approach to language teaching is well suited for teaching morphologically complex less widely taught languages, such as Hungarian and Finnish, in the UK context. -
