I had been invited to give talks in Europe, the USA and India, but I had to cancel all travelling plans because of my heart condition. This led to the idea of giving a series of talks in Auroville, where I am living, and to record them so that the people who had invited me would be able, if they so desired, to have the talks all the same.

  • Ben Hur (1959) Epica Classica, Morale Cristiana E Grande Drammaturgia Si Fondono in Uno Dei Più Grandi Kolossal Hollywoodiani
Genere Avventura durata 212 minuti. Produzione USA 1959.

  • Lincoln: a Novel (Narratives of Empire, Book 2)
ACCLAIM FOR GORE VIDAL’s LINCOLN “A brilliant marriage of fact and imagination. It’s just about everything a novel should be— pleasure, information, moral insight. [Vidal] gives us a man and a time so alive and real that we see and feel them.… A superb book.” —The Plain Dealer “Utterly convincing … Vidal is concerned with dissecting, obsessively and often brilliantly, the roots of personal ambition as they give rise to history itself.” —Joyce Carol Oates, The New York Times Book Review “An astonishing achievement.… Vidal is a masterly American historical novelist.… Vidal’s imagination of American politics, then and now, is so powerful as to compel awe.” —Harold Bloom, The New York Review of Books “The best American historical novel I’ve read in recent years.” —Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Vanity Fair “[A] literary triumph. There is no handy and cheap psychoanalysis here, but rather a careful scrutiny of the actions that spring from the core of Lincoln himself.… We are left to gure out the man as if he were a real person in our lives.” —Chicago Sun-Times “Lincoln reaches for sublimity.… This novel will, I suspect, maintain a permanent place in American letters.” —Andrew Delbanco, The New Republic “Vidal is the best all-round American man of letters since Edmund Wilson.… This is his most moving book.” —Newsweek “It is remarkable how much good history Mr. Vidal has been able to work into his novel. And I nd—astonishingly enough, since I have been over this material so many times—that Mr. Vidal has made of this familiar record a narrative that sustained my interest right up to the final page.” —Professor David Donald, Harvard University GORE VIDAL LINCOLN Gore Vidal was born in 1925 at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Gladsky: Texts and Other Fictions in Gore Vidal’s Burr TEXTS AND OTHER FICTIONS IN GORE VIDAL’S BURR Thomas Gladsky Central Missouri State University Over the years, Gore Vidal has campaigned furiously against theorists and writers of the new novel who, according to Vidal, “have attempted to change not only the form of the novel but the relationship between book and reader” (“French Letters” 67). In his essays, he has condemned the “misdirected” efforts of writers such as Donald Barthelme, John Gardner, Thomas Pynchon, John Barth, William Gass, and all those who come equipped with “formulas, theorems, signs, and diagrams because words have once again failed them” (“American Plastic” 102). In comparison, Vidal presents himself as a literary conservative, a defender of traditional form in fiction even though his own novels betray his willingness to penetrate beyond words and to experiment with form, especially in his series of historical novels.

April 18, 2002 Gore Vidal, Lewis H. Lapham, Barton J. Bernstein, Robert Higgs, Thomas Gale Moore Transcript David Theroux: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is David Theroux, and I’m the President of The Independent Institute. I’m delighted to welcome you to our program this evening entitled “Understanding America’s Terrorist Crisis: What Should Be Done?” Our program features world-renowned author and man of letters, Gore Vidal, and is co-sponsored by Harper’s Magazine. For those of you who have not seen his new book, Gore Vidal is the author of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace: How We Got to Be So Hated. The Independent Institute regularly sponsors the Independent Policy Forum, a series of lectures, seminars and debates held here in the San Francisco Bay area, and featuring outstanding authors, scholars and policy experts to address major social and economic issues. After 9/11 for example, we began a program to examine key issues involved in the terrorist war, and our program this evening continues this dialog. As a result, we seek to get beyond left and right, and feature speakers who present their own views so that we have a better opportunity to sift through and make up our own minds. For those of you new to The Independent Institute, you can find information in the printed program that hopefully everyone got.
