  • This Windswept Oregon Retreat Offers Adventure at the Edge of the World
TRAVEL This Windswept Oregon Retreat Offers Adventure at the Edge of the World by Michaela Trimble 02/26/2019 Oregon locals have long known Pacific City as the state’s under-the-radar basecamp for outdoor pursuits. In the Pacific Northwest and beyond, this once sleepy beach town is receiving quite the buzz, thanks to the recent opening of Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa, a 33-room lodge with 18 spacious oceanfront cottages. Each features cast-iron soaking tubs, custom-made racks for surfboards and bikes, and private outdoor balconies and patios with unobstructed views of one of the region’s most celebrated natural formations: the 327-foot-tall Haystack Rock. This oasis in Tillamook County is tucked between a trifecta of natural sites—Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, Bob Straub State Park, and Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. To get to Headlands Lodge, venture two hours west of Portland or 90 minutes south of the bustling resort town of Cannon Beach, right along the edge of Three Capes Scenic Drive. Headlands Lodge’s restaurant, Meridian When you’re not dining on fresh oysters sourced from nearby Netarts Bay at the outpost’s signature restaurant, Meridian, or reveling in relaxation during an intensive deep-tissue massage and replenishing seaweed wrap at the lodge’s own spa, Tidepools, it’s easy to gain swift access to the rugged natural beauty of Oregon’s coast—high capes, sandy spits, and protected bays included. When you enlist one of Headlands on-staff adventure concierges to craft the perfect outdoor experiences for you, exclusive excursions are in reach, from tucked-away beach bonfires to scenic hikes.

It’s the Place, Stupid! Volume 7, Issue 22 August 4, 2009 Papa Pinot’s Legacy Pervades 2009 IPNC “David Lett defined the term “visionary,” sailing against a strong current as he fulfilled the promise of Oregon wine. He planted grapes where others deemed it impossible, understanding that the very finest wines are often grown where it is most perilous, and he thrived on that challenge. His personality set the tone for the character of the Oregon wine industry, and his stunning wines rewarded his fearlessness, focus and independence. For those who prefer their opinions strong and their wines elegant, David was your man. What an inspiration.” Ted Farthing, Oregon Wine Board Executive Director, Oregon Wine Press, January 2009 Each July for the past twenty-four years, McMinnville, Oregon, has become Beaune in the USA. 700 Pinot geeks from all over the country and from every corner of the world descend on this inauspicious town to celebrate the fickle darling of wine cognoscenti and revel in their indulgence. The International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC) is held on the intimate and bucolic campus of Linfield College, but there is no homework or written tests, and no dreadful lectures at 8:00 in the morning, just an abundance of great Pinot Noir paired with the delicious bounty of Oregon prepared by the Pacific Northwest’s most talented chefs, and plenty of joie de vivre. This year’s IPNC, held on July 24-26, 2009, marked the twenty-third event, dating back to 1987, when a group of grape farmers and winemakers assembled to figure out a way to promote Oregon wine.

  • 2007 Pinot Noir Southeast Block
THE SOUTHEAST BLOCK The Southeast Block is a six-acre section of the Bethel Heights estate vineyard that consistently gives us wines of distinctive character. It was planted in 1979 on a south-facing slope between 420 and 520 feet elevation. The red clay soil is volcanic in origin, three feet deep and well drained. The vines are 100% Pommard clone, planted on their own roots in Oregon's pre- phylloxera days. At 30 years old the vines are still healthy and apparently phylloxera-free. The crop is held close to two tons per acre for optimum quality. THE 2007 VINTAGE was a classic cool Oregon vintage, similar to 2005 (and 1999 and 2001) and 2007 PINOT NOIR ® SOUTHEAST BLOCK very different from 2006, our hottest vintage on record. • Tualatin Hills and the Laurelwood District Are Oregon's Newest
171 views | Jun 10, 2020, 12:24pm EDT Tualatin Hills And The Laurelwood District Are Oregon’s Newest American Viticultural Areas Joseph V Micallef Contributor Spirits I write about wines and spirits and the hidden corners of the world Ponzi Vineyard, View from Aurora Vineyard PHOTO COURTESY PONZI VINEYARDS/ANDREA JOHNSON AERIALS Two new American Viticultural Areas (AVA) have been announced by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Located in the northern end of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, in the heart of Oregon’s Pinot Noir producing zone, the two new AVAs are Tualatin Hills and the Laurelwood District. The two AVAs, which are partially adjacent to one another, are notable for containing among the highest concentrations of Laurelwood soils in Oregon. Laurelwood soils consist of an exceptionally fine windblown soil called loess. It consists predominantly of silt-sized sediment that was formed by the accumulation of wind-blown dust and was produced by the grinding down of basaltic and other volcanic rocks by glaciers during the last ice age. They emphasize flavors of cherry, blackberry and spice. These wines offer a lighter, elegant style and texture with well-defined tannins, which is markedly different than the earthier, more robust, black fruit centered styles typical of Oregon’s sedimentary soils.

  • 2019 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
2019 WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR AVERÆN was born out of our love for cool climate Pinot Noir. Oregon’s Willamette Valley offers an ideal growing climate, where strong winds blow from the nearby Pacific Ocean, and the mix of ancient volcanic soils and marine sediments from a prehistoric ocean floor lend intense minerality and complexity to the Pinot Noir grapes grown on them. Simple sustainable farming, hands-off winemaking and a passion for Pinot Noir dictate our mission. Our vineyards span the Willamette’s sub-AVAs, enabling us to create a wine that is a true representation of the Valley as a whole – playing off each site’s specific personality and complementary nature to create a harmonious blend. 2018 Estate Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc Ribbon Ridge AVA Location: Ribbon Ridge is a sub-appellation of the Willamette Valley AVA that sits 22 miles southwest of Portland, 4 miles northwest of Dundee and 40 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Ribbon Ridge is contained within the larger Chehalem Mountains AVA - which is contained with the Willamette Valley AVA. The appellation became official in 2005. Climate: Protected by geographical features to the north, south and west, Ribbon Ridge's grape- growing hillsides are slightly warmer and drier when compared to the adjacent valley floors. Ribbon Ridge's moderate climate is well suited for early grape growth in the spring, consistent and even ripening over the summer and a long, full maturing season in the fall. Soils: The Ribbon Ridge region contains primarily sedimentary soils that are younger, finer and more uniform than the alluvial sedimentary and volcanic soils of neighboring regions. These moderately deep, well-drained silty-clay loam soils are part of the Willakenzie soil series and are of low fertility and ideal for growing high-quality wine grapes. Topography: Geographically, Ribbon Ridge is a 3.5-mile long by 1.75-mile wide ridge that extends from the Chehalem Mountains. The ridge rises 683 feet from the Chehalem Valley floor, giving it an island-like appearance. Site Characteristics: This is the only vineyard in Ribbon Ridge with plantings of Sauvignon Blanc. Granted, there are only around 30 vineyards in the AVA and there is little Sauvignon Blanc planted in the entire Willamette Valley, however the sandy marine soils and slightly cooler nature of this appellation are perfect growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc.

382 Book and Film Reviews VIVIAN PERRY and JOHN VINCENT: Winemakers of the Willamette Valley: Pioneering Vintners from Oregon’s Wine Country. American Palate, Charleston, South Carolina, 2013, 160 pp., ISBN: 978-1609496760 (paperback), $19.99. CILA WARNCKE: Oregon Wine Pioneers. Vine Lives Publishing, Portland, Oregon, 2015, 234 pp., ISBN: 978-1943090761 (paperback), $19.99. Admittedly, it was hard to write a dispassionate review of books that so lovingly describe the region in which I live and so admiringly profile many of my acquain- tances in the Oregon wine industry. Therefore, I used as measures of merit how well each echoed my impressions of this most beautiful area and its people, and whether each accomplished its objectives. Perry’s and Vincent’s Winemakers of the Willamette Valley (WWV) “is meant to showcase the stories of a handful of Oregon’s many Willamette Valley winemakers” (WWV, p. 11). A foreword by Chehalem founder Harry Peterson-Nedry sets the per- sonal tone that pervades those stories. Next, in a mere eight pages of text, the first chapter, “History of the Willamette Valley Wine Region,” covers the climate, soil, grape selection, craftsmanship, industry structure and early success in sufficient detail to provide valuable context. The authors then share intimate interviews with eighteen vintners and vignerons. Within each chapter named for one or two wine- makers are brief descriptions of the wineries that each is affiliated with. These include year founded, ownership, varietals, tasting room location, hours and con- tacts. Sustainability features, a point of pride in the Oregon wine industry, are also listed.
