POLLITZER, M.D. Division of Epidemiology, World Health Organization Manuscript received in April 1952 RODENTS AND LAGOMORPHA Reviewing in 1928 the then rather limited knowledge available concerning the occurrence and importance of plague in rodents other than the common rats and mice, Jorge 129 felt justified in drawing a clear-cut distinction between the pandemic type of plague introduced into human settlements and houses all over the world by the " domestic " rats and mice, and " peste selvatique ", which is dangerous for man only when he invades the remote endemic foci populated by wild rodents. Although Jorge's concept was accepted, some discussion arose regarding the appropriateness of the term " peste selvatique" or, as Stallybrass 282 and Wu Lien-teh 318 translated it, " selvatic plague ". It was pointed out by Meyer 194 that, on etymological grounds, the name " sylvatic plague " would be preferable, and this term was widely used until POzzO 238 and Hoekenga 105 doubted, and Girard 82 denied, its adequacy on the grounds that the word " sylvatic" implied that the rodents concerned lived in forests, whereas that was rarely the case. Girard therefore advocated the reversion to the expression "wild-rodent plague" which was used before the publication of Jorge's study-a proposal it has seemed advisable to accept for the present studies. Much more important than the difficulty of adopting an adequate nomenclature is that of distinguishing between rat and wild-rodent plague- a distinction which is no longer as clear-cut as Jorge was entitled to assume. -

Hernández-Castellano8 Received: 30 October 2019 /Accepted: 22 December 2019 /Published online: 2 January 2020 # Springer Nature B.V. 2020 Abstract The Camelidae family comprises the Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus), the dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius), and four species of South American camelids: llama (Lama glama),alpaca(Lama pacos)guanaco(Lama guanicoe), and vicuña (Vicugna vicugna). The main characteristic of these species is their ability to cope with either hard climatic conditions like those found in arid regions (Bactrian and dromedary camels) or high-altitude landscapes like those found in South America (South American camelids). Because of such interesting physiological and adaptive traits, the interest for these animals as livestock species has increased considerably over the last years. In general, the main animal products obtained from these animals are meat, milk, and hair fiber, although they are also used for races and work among other activities. In the near future, climate change will likely decrease agricultural areas for animal production worldwide, particularly in the tropics and subtropics where competition with crops for human consumption is a major problem already. In such conditions, extensive animal production could be limited in some extent to semi-arid rangelands, subjected to periodical draughts and erratic patterns of rainfall, severely affecting conventional livestock production, namely cattle and sheep. -

Questions: How do climatic variables affect the habitat suitability and distribution of T. indica? How will changes in climatic variables affect the spatial distribution of T. indica across Iran? Will those changes influence the outbreak regions of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis? Organism: The Indian gerbil, T. indica, a rodent. Analytical methods: Maximum entropy modelling (MaxEnt) to predict suitable regions and the potential distribution of this gerbil in the present and future in Iran. Results: Species distribution models revealed the four variables most effective in determining Indian gerbil occurrence: the mean precipitation of the year’s driest month; the seasonality of precipitation; the mean temperature of the warmest quarter of the year; and the mean temperature of the wettest quarter. According to our model, the southern parts of Iran have the most suitable habitat for T. indica. With global climate change, suitable habitats for the gerbil will increase considerably in Iran spreading outwards toward the southwest, centrally, and the northeast. -

The rodent-like incisors of the extinct Balearic Island goat, Myo- tragus balearicus Bate/ have been regarded as the onlj- instance of the development of such teeth by an even-toed ungulate. " The peculiar character of the incisors [of Myotragus'] * * *," writes Dr. C. W. Andrews,- "has no parallel among the Artiodactyle un- gulates, and the steps by which it has been acquired can only be surmised." Although this appears to be the generally accepted opin- ion on the subject, teeth whose structure nearly approaches that present in the incisors of Myotragus occur in a well-known living artiodactyl, the vicunia; and through the unusual conditions seen in these recent teeth the probable history of the still more specialized dentition of the fossil Balearic goat may be traced. Photographs of incisors of Vicugna^ and La^na are reproduced in the accompanying plate; those of Vicugna are at tlie left, and in each instance the upper three figures represent milk teeth. The characters are so \Q.vy obvious that they scarcely require anj^ detailed comment. In Lama the general outline of the tooth in both adult and young is strongly cuneate with the greatest width ranging froni about one-fifth to about one-fourth the greatest length. The root tapers rapidly to a closed base ; the enamel on the lingual side of the crown extends from the distal extremity at least one-third of the distance to the base. -

Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment for the Use of Wildlife Damage Management Methods by USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services Chapter I Introduction to Risk Assessments for Methods Used in Wildlife Damage Management MAY 2017 Introduction to Risk Assessments for Methods Used in Wildlife Damage Management EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services (WS) Program completed Risk Assessments for methods used in wildlife damage management in 1992 (USDA 1997). While those Risk Assessments are still valid, for the most part, the WS Program has expanded programs into different areas of wildlife management and wildlife damage management (WDM) such as work on airports, with feral swine and management of other invasive species, disease surveillance and control. Inherently, these programs have expanded the methods being used. Additionally, research has improved the effectiveness and selectiveness of methods being used and made new tools available. Thus, new methods and strategies will be analyzed in these risk assessments to cover the latest methods being used. The risk assements are being completed in Chapters and will be made available on a website, which can be regularly updated. Similar methods are combined into single risk assessments for efficiency; for example Chapter IV contains all foothold traps being used including standard foothold traps, pole traps, and foot cuffs. The Introduction to Risk Assessments is Chapter I and was completed to give an overall summary of the national WS Program. The methods being used and risks to target and nontarget species, people, pets, and the environment, and the issue of humanenss are discussed in this Chapter. From FY11 to FY15, WS had work tasks associated with 53 different methods being used. -

117 Wildlife Trends in Liberia and Sierra Leone P. T. Robinson In an eight-month field study of the pygmy hippopotamus, an endangered Red Book species, the author was able to make some assessment of the status of other animals in Liberia and Sierra Leone and shows how the danger is increasing for most of them. Chimpanzees in particular are exported in large numbers, and in order to catch the young animals whole family groups may be eliminated. West African countries have made little effort to conserve their unique types of vegetation and wildlife. Instead the tendency has been to establish parks and reserves in grassland areas that are similar to those of East Africa. But Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Ivory Coast all have areas of mature tropical rain forests where reserves could be established. The high forests of the tropics are of great value, culturally, scientifically and economically, and it is important to conserve their unique types of fauna and flora. Rare and Uncommon Species The pygmy hippopotamus Choeropsis liberiensis is one of West Africa's unique species, dependent on forest vegetation, which is decreasing seriously. Nowhere is it abundant in the four countries where it occurs: Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Ivory Coast! Comparisons with its past distribution show that populations today are much more localised; for example, the disrupted distribution pattern across Liberia is related to the major motor-road arteries, which form avenues of human settlement. Increased population, hunting, agriculture, forestry and mining, combined with the hippo's non-gregarious nature, low repro- ductive rate and apparent susceptibility to hunting and adverse land use, have resulted in a steady decrease in its range. -

Lolldaiga Hills Mammal Survey, 2014 Anne-Marie C. Hodge INTRODUCTION Here I describe the results of a combined live trapping and game camera monitoring survey for wild mammals, conducted within the Lolldaiga Hills Conservation Landscape (LHCL) from 22-28 February 2014. The rich and diverse habitats located within the LHCL facilitate the presence of a diverse assemblage of mammalian species, and the primary aim of this survey was to confirm the presence of as many of these species as possible, as well so to gain insights into which habitats within the LHCL are frequented by specific species of interest. Although capture rates were too low to provide accurate abundance estimates, the results of this study yield valuable insights into the presence and site occupancy of some rare and important species with the LHCL, and will help to guide repeated and/or expanded surveys in the future. METHODS Live trapping Survey grids were established at two different sites on Lolldaiga Hills Conservation Landscape (LHCL). The first trap grid consisted of a 400 x 300 grid of live traps positioned along the riverbank near the entrance gate of the property (N 00° 07.384’ E 37° 08.189’). The second trap grid covered 200 x 300 m from the base of a large kopje, through a meadow and across a series of small dam ponds (N 00° 10.022’ E 37° 06.693’). Each grid consisted of five transect lines, each of which contained four Tomahawk live-traps (12 x 10 x 36 in), spaced 100 m apart. At the river site, transect lines were spaced 100 m from each other, while at the dam grid the transect lines were spaced 50 m apart, in order to maximize trap intensity around the water sources. -

Genetic improvement of fiber characteristics would increase their economic benefits and quality of life. The incorporation of molecular marker technology could overcome current limitations for the implementation of genetic improvement programs. Hence, the aim of this project was the generation of an alpaca single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray. A sample of 150 Huacaya alpacas from four farms, two each in Puno and Cerro de Pasco were used for SNP discovery by genotyping by sequencing (GBS). Reduced representation libraries, two per animal, were produced after DNA digestion with ApeK1 and double digestion with Pst1-Msp1. Ten alpaca genomes, sequenced at depths between 12× to 30×, and the VicPac3.1 reference genome were used for read alignments. Variables from both males and females were combined since univariate and multivariate analyses revealed there was no sexual dimorphism in the two species(Wilks' lambda, Λ = 0,942; p = 0.78 for D. auricularis and Λ = 0, 81; p = 0.82 for G. paeba). Selina Brace Ian Barnes 2 “Why should we look to the past? ……Because there is nowhere else to look.” James Burke 3 Abstract The Late Quaternary has been a period of significant change for terrestrial mammals, including episodes of extinction, population sub-division and colonisation. Studying this period provides a means to improve understanding of evolutionary mechanisms, and to determine processes that have led to current distributions. For large mammals, recent work has demonstrated the utility of ancient DNA in understanding demographic change and phylogenetic relationships, largely through well-preserved specimens from permafrost and deep cave deposits. In contrast, much less ancient DNA work has been conducted on small mammals. This project focuses on the development of ancient mitochondrial DNA datasets to explore the utility of rodent ancient DNA analysis. Two studies in Europe investigate population change over millennial timescales. Arctic collared lemming (Dicrostonyx torquatus) specimens are chronologically sampled from a single cave locality, Trou Al’Wesse (Belgian Ardennes). Two end Pleistocene population extinction-recolonisation events are identified and correspond temporally with - localised disappearance of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). A second study examines postglacial histories of European water voles (Arvicola), revealing two temporally distinct colonisation events in the UK.
