For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] "A multi-stemmed flower": reading Sandro Penna in search of modernity Abstract Sandro Penna's poetry (1906-1977), is a delicate combination of melancholy and exhilaration, and shows innovation and modernity inside the Italian lyrical tradition. Critically stereotyping Penna's poetry as a flower with no evident stem, meaning no external influences, narrows the depth of his literary corpus. In his notes Penna reveals himself as a voracious reader of modern international literature and critics Roberto Deidier and Pierfranco Bruni pointed out that his evident European influences completely lack investigation. Most criticism though do not seem to acknowledge how close Penna's poetry is to the ideas of "modern" and "new" as fostered by Modernists and Imagists. This essay challenges the literary commonplace that Penna is a miracle out of history and time and, investigating Penna's archives and poems, discloses connections, references and similarities between his poetry and the major movements - French Symbolism, Modernism, Imagism - and literary personalities of the twentieth century.

  • From Artist-As-Leader to Leader-As-Artist Is a Critical Examination of the Image of Contemporary Leadership and Its Roots
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by UVH Repository from from from artist - as artist-as-leader - leader to to to leader leader-as-artist - as From artist-as-leader to leader-as-artist is a critical examination of - artist the image of contemporary leadership and its roots. Through the lens of modern management texts, Pieterse explores the the dutch Beat poet and performer link between contemporary management speak and the artistic critique of the avant-garde movements of the 1950s in the Netherlands, simon Vinkenoog as exemplar of leadership focusing specifically on the Dutch Fiftiers group, the Cobra movement and 1960s countercultural activism. Subsequently, a neo- in contemporary organizations management discourse is generated whereby the figure of the artist becomes the model for the modern leader: charismatic, visionary, intuitive, mobile, creative, cooperative, open to taking risks and strong at networking. Such a discourse appeals to the values of self- actualization, freedom, authenticity and “knowledge deriving from personal experience” (Boltanski and Chiapello 2007: 113), the very values of the artistic critique that have been absorbed into modern- day capitalism. Pieterse explores this transformation of the artistic critique into contemporary leadership rhetoric by unfolding the life and work of ISBN 978-90-818047-1-4 the Dutch Beat poet and performer Simon Vinkenoog, a highly influential leader in the artistic critique. In doing so he examines the dilemmas, paradoxes and contradictions present within contemporary leadership. Vincent Pieterse is a Program Director at de Baak Management Centre, one of the largest management training institutes in the Vincent Pieterse NUR 600 Netherlands.

You may download and print this text by Roberta Serpolli, solely for personal use THE PANZA COLLECTION STORY “The Panza Collection is entirely a couple’s affair. When my wife Giovanna and I discover works by a new artist, I look at her and she looks at me. I can see in her eyes if she wants to buy or not. So even between my wife and me, ‘looking’ is an issue.” Giuseppe Panza, 20091 Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, along with his wife Giovanna, is recognized as one of the world’s foremost collectors of contemporary art. The collection, originally composed of around 2,500 works of art, is mainly representative of the most significant developments in American art from post- World War II to the 21st century. Along with a need to fulfill spiritual and inner quests, both intuition and reflection have inspired the collectors’ choice that would demonstrate, retrospectively, their far- sightedness. By devoting themselves to an in-depth focus on emerging artists and specific creative periods, the Panzas contributed to acknowledging the new art forms among both the general public and the art market. The Beginnings of the Collection: On the Road to America The collection ideally began in 1954 when Giuseppe, at the age of thirty years, traveled to South America and the United States, from New York to Los Angeles, where he discovered the continents’ captivating vitality of economy and culture. Upon his return to Milan, he felt the need to take part in the international cultural milieu. In 1955, shortly after his marriage with Giovanna Magnifico, Giuseppe purchased his first work of art by Italian abstract painter Atanasio Soldati.

  • This Book Is a Compendium of New Wave Posters. It Is Organized Around the Designers (At Last!)
“This book is a compendium of new wave posters. It is organized around the designers (at last!). It emphasizes the key contribution of Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe, and beyond. And it is a very timely volume, assembled with R|A|P’s usual flair, style and understanding.” –CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING, FROM THE INTRODUCTION 2 artbook.com French New Wave A Revolution in Design Edited by Tony Nourmand. Introduction by Christopher Frayling. The French New Wave of the 1950s and 1960s is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape, and its style has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses—in France and internationally—helped to create this style, and in so doing found themselves at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. French New Wave: A Revolution in Design celebrates explosive and groundbreaking poster art that accompanied French New Wave films like The 400 Blows (1959), Jules and Jim (1962) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Featuring posters from over 20 countries, the imagery is accompanied by biographies on more than 100 artists, photographers and designers involved—the first time many of those responsible for promoting and portraying this movement have been properly recognized. This publication spotlights the poster designers who worked alongside directors, cinematographers and actors to define the look of the French New Wave. Artists presented in this volume include Jean-Michel Folon, Boris Grinsson, Waldemar Świerzy, Christian Broutin, Tomasz Rumiński, Hans Hillman, Georges Allard, René Ferracci, Bruno Rehak, Zdeněk Ziegler, Miroslav Vystrcil, Peter Strausfeld, Maciej Hibner, Andrzej Krajewski, Maciej Zbikowski, Josef Vylet’al, Sandro Simeoni, Averardo Ciriello, Marcello Colizzi and many more.
