THEfirst and chief point of interest in this chapter is, whether the numerous domesticated varieties of the dog have descended from a single wild species, or froin several. Some authors believe that all have descended froin the wolf, or from the jackal, or from anunknown and extinct species. Others again believe, and this of late has been the favourite tenet, that they have descended from several species, extinct and recent, more or less commingled together. We shall probably never be able to ascertain their origin with certainty. Palaeontology does not throw much light on the question, owing, on the one hand, to the close similarity of the skulls of extinct as well as living wolves and jackals, and owing, on the other hand, to Owen, ‘ British Fossil Mammals,’ habits. -
Cultural Imaginations of Piracy in Video Games
FORUM FOR INTER-AMERICAN RESEARCH (FIAR) VOL. 11.2 (SEP. 2018) 30-43 ISSN: 1867-1519 © forum for inter-american research “In a world without gold, we might have been heroes!” Cultural Imaginations of Piracy in Video Games EUGEN PFISTER (HOCHSCHULE DER KÜNSTE BERN) Abstract From its beginning, colonialism had to be legitimized in Western Europe through cultural and political narratives and imagery, for example in early modern travel reports and engravings. Images and tales of the exotic Caribbean, of beautiful but dangerous „natives“, of unbelievable fortunes and adventures inspired numerous generations of young men to leave for the „new worlds“ and those left behind to support the project. An interesting figure in this set of imaginations in North- Western Europe was the “pirate”: poems, plays, novels and illustrations of dashing young rogues, helping their nation to claim their rightful share of the „Seven Seas“ achieved major successes in France, Britain the Netherlands and beyond. These images – regardless of how far they might have been from their historical inspiration – were immensely successful and are still an integral and popular part of our narrative repertoire: from novels to movies to video games. It is important to note that the “story” was – from the 18th century onwards –almost always the same: a young (often aristocratic) man, unfairly convicted for a crime he didn’t commit became an hors-la-loi against his will but still adhered to his own strict code of conduct and honour. By rescuing a city/ colony/princess he redeemed himself and could be reintegrated into society. Here lies the morale of the story: these imaginations functioned also as acts of political communication, teaching “social discipline”. -
Submission to Allow the Peruvians Hairless Dogs to Run As Sighthounds in Lure Coursing. Peruvians Have Been Lure Coursing In
2019 LURE COURSING MTG – ATTACHMENT 5d Submission to allow the Peruvians Hairless Dogs to run as Sighthounds in Lure Coursing. Peruvians have been Lure Coursing in South Australia since the formation of the South Australian Lure Coursing and Racing Club in 2014. We have been running as CAT dog but have been gaining sighthound scores. We have a Peruvian with a coursing title and plan to take two others to their titles soon. As we believe our breed is a Primitive Sighthound it seems logical to race them as such and enable them to compete and run with other Peruvians in tandem races. On observation the Peruvian courses in a similar way to other primitive hounds and has exactly the same action and drive that is needed to course over rough terrain that is seen in dogs such as the Afghan and Saluki. I have spoken to Lure Coursing Judges who have judged Peruvians coursing and below are some of their comments. When having the pleasure of judging the Peruvian in Adelaide at Lure Coursing I observed that the breed showed the same tendency as a sighthound both on watching and observing where the lure was going and also the running and speed of this breed. They were very attentive to what was around them when it came to the course. Agility for the speed of the dog was very precise with constant watch on the lure, as a sighthound does. Alison Jarvis I submit this letter in regards to discussions in ANKC Lure Coursing ruling about transferal of the breed Peruvian Hairless dog into the sighthound stream from Coursing Ability stream. -

I have loved this since I first read it shortly after it ...By Edith RudyI have loved this since I first read it shortly after it was published. (Powers is one of those authors whose books I buy immediately.) The chance to get it for my Kindle was delightful...I am slowly trying to get my favorites on my e- reader. It can be a bit complex to figure out...the protagonist is both a "fish" and a "candidate for the crown". He's a fish because he ignored good advice and got into a poker game where he lost his soul...but he's also the natural son of the current Fisher King...though nobody knows it except the old man who adopted him after his natural father tried to kill him.As is the case with most of Powers' writing, the book deals with resurrection. (In this case, it's even the name of the variety of poker he plays.) Scott decides that he will attempt to take the crown rather than giving up his soul. -

The Scourge of the Land and Sea. an Awful Outlaw Or a Romantic Hero?
The scourge of the land and sea An awful outlaw or a romantic hero? As long as people sailed through the rivers and the high seas there were those who tried to gain wealth by depriving others of their possessions. The existence of the sea rovers or, more precisely, sea robbers, is intricately connected with the developed commerce and conflicts among different communities and countries. In peaceful times in well-organized states piracy is usually viewed as an abomination and pirates are social outcasts living on the verge of normal communities under the strict official rule. They are the violent strangers, dealing with death and destruction, bringing flames, slavery and plunder. Hence the sea robbers are the aliens – cruel, colorful, constantly drunk, and, to some extent, free. They are definitely very different from the ordinary folks. In this article I would like to explain the difference between pirates and corsairs and present, in short, the tradition of Western piracy. The important factor of sea roving was the daily existence of mariners which distinguished typical sailors from land dwellers. I would like to describe the reality of life aboard the ship in the golden age of sail. It might be helpful in developing a better understanding of the romantic allure of piracy which survived to our very days. Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his probably most famous work, Faust, put into the mouth of Mephistopheles memorable words: I know a little of navigation: War, trade, and piracy, allow, As three in one, no separation1. And indeed: he was right. Nowadays – in the 21st century – the dire risk of being robbed while at sea does not want to cease to exist. -
