Tim Powers : Last Call before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Last Call:

(Powers is one of those authors whose books I buy immediately.) The chance to get it for my Kindle was delightful...I am slowly trying to get my favorites on my e- reader. It can be a bit complex to figure out...the protagonist is both a "fish" and a "candidate for the crown". He's a fish because he ignored good advice and got into a poker game where he lost his soul...but he's also the natural son of the current Fisher King...though nobody knows it except the old man who adopted him after his natural father tried to kill him.As is the case with most of Powers' writing, the book deals with resurrection. (In this case, it's even the name of the variety of poker he plays.) Scott decides that he will attempt to take the crown rather than giving up his soul. The struggle is rough, and involves some very odd characters. (Another Powers "trademark".)Simply put, I love this book, and its sequels, along with pretty much everything else of Powers' that I've ever read. And while it's considered the "first" of a trilogy, it is actually a logical followup to Powers' "".0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A mix of sci fi, , and legendBy Leighkaren LabayThis got on all cylinders. Powers used elements of Arthurian legend, Egyptian legend, Jungian philosophy, King's Dark Tower, Tarot and so many other things. It was a long book but really fast paced as well as being pretty deep. Scott Crane is the hero of the tail, a washed up ne'er do well alcoholic. The most unlikely hero, but his transformation is wonderful. What a great journey. Can't wait to read Book 2.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Long and Painful, But...By illiandanticTim Powers sure writes some interesting books. His 1992 "Last Call" (the first book in his "Fault Lines" series) won the for Best Novel and the for Best Fantasy Novel in 1993. Not only is it different as only Tim Powers can write, it's also different from what Tim Powers usually writes. His normal method is to fill in the gaps in documented historical records with weirdness to come up with an "alternate history." In theory, that's what we have here. But, in this case, the historical records he's basing things on are a very minor and tenuous link to and the rise of Las Vegas. For all intents and purposes, this book is really just the weird stuff that's supposed to be around the real history. In general, the basis is an interpretation and corruption of the Fisher King myth melded with Tarots (so you might look those up before starting this). I have no problem with all of that. My biggest issues with the book are that just about every character is a low-life loser (though a few get better by the end of the book) and there are a lot of painful activities associated with them. It's uncomfortable. This discomfort is magnified a bit by the length of the book. But, by the time Powers gets to the end, it's all worth it: he ties up all the lose ends just as nicely as he always does. So, overall, I'm going to rate the book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. Just be prepared to put in a bit of time before things start turning around and getting more positive. The novels in Tim Powers' "Fault Lines" series are:1. Last Call2. Expiration Date (The Fault Lines Trilogy Book 2)3. Earthquake Weather (The Fault Lines Trilogy Book 3)

Enchantingly dark and compellingly real, the World Fantasy Award-winning novel Last Call, set in the gritty, dazzling underworld known as Las Vegas, is a masterpiece of magic realism from critically acclaimed author Tim Powers. Scott Crane abandoned his career as a professional poker player twenty years ago and hasn't returned to Las Vegas, or held a hand of cards, in ten years. But troubling nightmares about a strange poker game he once attended on a houseboat on Lake Mead are drawing him back to the magical city. For the mythic game he believed he won did not end that night in 1969 -- and the price of his winnings was his soul. Now, a pot far more strange and perilous than he ever could imagine depends on the turning of a card.
