One of their first desires was the development of a hound-type breed for Finnish conditions. As the breeds introduced to our country from abroad, primarily Russia, Sweden and England, did not meet the requirements of the Finnish hunting community, a group of active hunters began to search the existing Finnish dog population for individuals with the best hunting traits. The aim was to breed a native hound-type dog from them. The first standard was written in 1932. The breeding associations in different parts of the country were very important to the development of the breed. Three dogs were selected from the first dog show arranged by Suomen Kennelklubi and eight more were added the next year. The first breed characteristics were determined on the basis of these dogs in 1893. Reddish brown was confirmed as the approved colour.

    2019 LURE COURSING MTG – ATTACHMENT 5d Submission to allow the Peruvians Hairless Dogs to run as Sighthounds in Lure Coursing. Peruvians have been Lure Coursing in South Australia since the formation of the South Australian Lure Coursing and Racing Club in 2014. We have been running as CAT dog but have been gaining sighthound scores. We have a Peruvian with a coursing title and plan to take two others to their titles soon. As we believe our breed is a Primitive Sighthound it seems logical to race them as such and enable them to compete and run with other Peruvians in tandem races. On observation the Peruvian courses in a similar way to other primitive hounds and has exactly the same action and drive that is needed to course over rough terrain that is seen in dogs such as the Afghan and Saluki. I have spoken to Lure Coursing Judges who have judged Peruvians coursing and below are some of their comments. When having the pleasure of judging the Peruvian in Adelaide at Lure Coursing I observed that the breed showed the same tendency as a sighthound both on watching and observing where the lure was going and also the running and speed of this breed. They were very attentive to what was around them when it came to the course. Agility for the speed of the dog was very precise with constant watch on the lure, as a sighthound does. REQUIREMENTS APPLIED TO ALL BREEDS Finnish Show Champion (FI CH) At least three certificates obtained in Finnish dog shows under three different judges. At least one of these certificates must be obtained at the minimum age of 24 months. Possible breed-specific requirements regarding trial results will also have to be met. The change enters into force on 1.6.2011. (Council 29/5/11) The requirements regarding trial results are minimum requirements. For a dog that has a Finnish owner / holder, results in breed-specific trials gained in Nordic countries count towards the Finnish Show Champion title. In addition, the dog must have obtained at least the quality grade good at a dog show at the minimum age of 15 months. A foreign dog is awarded the Finnish Agility Champion title, once it has obtained the national Agility Champion title of its country and has been awarded one Agility Certificate in the highest class in Agility in Finland.
