Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 2 Abstract This section discusses the complex psychological and philosophical reason for Shogun Yoshimune’s contrasting handlings of his two adopted daughters’ and his favorite son’s weddings. In my thinking, Yoshimune lived up to his philosophical principles by the illogical, puzzling treatment of the three weddings. We can witness the manifestation of his modest and frugal personality inherited from his ancestor Ieyasu, cohabiting with his strong but unconventional sense of obligation and respect for his benefactor Tsunayoshi. Bodiford, Chair This dissertation considers two intersecting aspects of premodern Japanese religions: the development of mountain-based religious systems and the formation of numinous sites. The first aspect focuses in particular on the historical emergence of a mountain religious school in Japan known as Shugendō. While previous scholarship often categorizes Shugendō as a form of folk religion, this designation tends to situate the school in overly broad terms that neglect its historical and regional stages of formation. In contrast, this project examines Shugendō through the investigation of a single site. Through a close reading of textual, epigraphical, and visual sources from Mt. Togakushi (in present-day Nagano Ken), I trace the development of Shugendō and other religious trends from roughly the thirteenth through mid-nineteenth centuries. This study further differs from previous research insofar as it analyzes Shugendō as a concrete system of practices, doctrines, members, institutions, and identities. -

Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics. -

Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1996 23/1-2 Zen and the Art of Religious Prejudice Efforts to Reform a Tradition of Social Discrimination William Bodiford Since the so-called Machida affair, the Soto Zen school has become embroiled in controversies over traditional institutional practices that fos ter prejudicial attitudes and social discrimination. In response to public denunciations by the Buraku Liberation League, the Soto school founded a Human Rights Division charged with eliminating discriminatory prac tices and reforming Soto public image. Evidence of discriminatory lan guage, necrologies, posthumous names, talismans, and ritual practices within Soto has been publicized and steps taken to eliminate them. This is the larger context within which Soto scholars, including advocates of “Critical Buddhism” (which has attracted wide attention outside of Japan) have sought to repudiate Buddhist teachings (such as “original awakening”) that they identify as fostering social discrimination. The significance of continuing dialogue in this context was demon strated in the manner in which the Buraku people’s problem in Japan came to be rightly understood. In WCRP III a delegate from [Japan] completely denied the existence of discrimination against the Buraku people [i.e., outcastes],but with continuing study of the problem, the same delegate at WCRP IV frankly admitted the fact of [his] being in the camp of discriminating agents. — Proceedings of the Fourth World Conference on Religion and Peace (Taylor and Gebhardt 1986,p. 232). Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese teachers have created European organizations in the past forty years, and some of their students have started teaching. While their American counterparts are well documented in the growing literature on the making of a Western Buddhism, the European groups are less known.(1) This paper aims at highlighting patterns of changes and adaptations of Zen Buddhism in Europe. It proposes an overview of European Zen organizations and argues that an institutional approach can highlight important aspects of the transplantation of Zen Buddhism into a new culture. A serious shortcoming of such an endeavor was pointed out in a 1993 conference held in Stockholm. A group -

chapter 6 Enlightened Authorship: The Case of Dōgen Kigen Raji C. Steineck Dōgen as Author: Modern and Medieval Conditions This chapter is concerned with questions of authorship in texts related to Dōgen 道元, a Japanese monk who lived between 1200 and 1253, at the dawn of the Japanese Medieval period. The Japanese Sōtō School of Zen Buddhism reveres Dōgen as its founder. This has secured him a place in the intellectual and religious history of Japan. Furthermore, his extensive doctrinal writings in the then new scriptural format of wakan konkōbun 和漢混淆文, a form of writing that combines Chinese characters and lexemes with indigenous syllabic script and grammar, by their rhetorical and poetical force make him a classic of Japanese literature. Scholarly research on Dōgen and his works originated in the eighteenth cen- tury as part of a reform movement within the Sōtō School.1 In the early 1920s, Dōgen became part of a broader agenda: The influential philosopher Watsuji Tetsurō liberated him from the confines of sectarian concern and treated him as a source of universally valid philosophical insight.2 Ever since, philosophi- cal discussions on Dōgen have partly been spurred by a demand for the self- assertion of the Japanese spirit, as in Tanabe Hajime’s A Personal Philosophical View of the Shōbō genzō.3 The agenda was to find, or construct, a philosophical author who lived well before the advent of the Western imperialist powers, and even before those authors who formulated the groundwork of a moder- nity that was perceived, in Japan as much as in Europe, in the 1920s and 1930s, as intrinsically “Western.” One may see some parallels here to the process of 1 David Riggs, “Meditation for Laymen and Laywomen: The ‘Buddha Samadhi’ (‘Jijuyu Zanmai’) of Menzan Zuiho,” in: Zen Classics: Formative Texts in the History of Zen Buddhism, edited by Dale S. -

CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF RELIGION 2016 NEWSLETTER UCLA 1 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear colleagues and friends of the Center, As the UCLA Center for the Study of Religion moves into its third decade, we can look back with pride at what we have contributed, but also with humility at how much important work we have yet to do. Open debate and dialogue were at the heart of events this past year, such as our interfaith discussion series, in which panelists presented and explored the interrelated perspectives of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam on a range of consequential topics, including the localization of religion in holy places and sacred space, and religion’s role in American politics. All were welcome, from members of our own UCLA community to the many diverse communities of our city and beyond. At our 20th anniversary celebration I had the privilege of hearing Jared Diamond speak about “The Evolution and Function of Human Religion” and interviewing him for an enthusiastic standing-room-only crowd in Schoenberg Hall – an event with the largest attendance in the Center’s history. In this year of a Presidential election, with the relationships among different religions and their moral teachings so prominently disputed on the campaign trail, we will engage 2016 those issues in the best academic traditions of rational, informed, and fair-minded inquiry. In an era of worldwide tension and struggle among various faiths and holy books, there 2016 are many webs that urgently need untangling – a task that will require all the skills of our various disciplines in thoughtful conversation with each other. -
