THE SOUTH AMERICAN NEMATOGNATHI OF THE MUSEUMS AT LEIDEN AND AMSTERDAM by J. W. B. VAN DER STIQCHEL (Museum voor het OnderwSs, 's-Gravenhage) The collections of the South American Nematognathi in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden, referred to in this publication as "Mu• seum Leiden", and of those in the Zoologisch Museum at Amsterdam, referred to as "Museum Amsterdam", consist of valuable material, which for a very important part has not been studied yet. I feel very much obliged to Prof. Dr. H. Boschma who allowed me to start with the study of the Leiden collections and whom I offer here my sincere thanks. At the same time I want to express my gratitude towards Prof. Dr. L. F. de Beaufort, who has been so kind to place the collection of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam at my disposal. Furthermore I am greatly indebted to Dr. F. P. Koumans at Leiden for his assistance and advice to solve the various problems which I met during my study. The material dealt with here comes from a large number of collections of different collectors, from various areas of South America, it consists of 125 species, belonging to 14 families of the order Nematognathi. Contrary to the original expectations no adequate number of specimens from Surinam could be obtained to get a sufficient opinion about the occurrence of the various species, and, if possible, also about their distribution in this tropical American part of the Netherlands. On the whole the collections from Surinam were limited to the generally known species only. -

Molecular Clocks Provide New Insights Into the Evolutionary History of Galeichthyine Sea Catfishes

Armbruster1 1Department of Biological Sciences, Auburn University, 331 Funchess Hall, Auburn, Alabama 36849 2E-mail: [email protected] Received August 28, 2008 Accepted January 7, 2009 Intercontinental distributions in the southern hemisphere can either be the result of Gondwanan vicariance or more recent transoceanic dispersal. Transoceanic dispersal has come into vogue for explaining many intercontinental distributions; however, it has been used mainly for organisms that can float or raft between the continents. Despite their name, the Sea Catfishes (Ariidae) have limited dispersal ability, and there are no examples of nearshore ariid genera with a transoceanic distribution except for Galeichthys where three species occur in southern Africa and one in the Peruvian coast. A previous study suggested that the group originated in Gondwana, and that the species arrived at their current range after the breakup of the supercontinent in the Early Cretaceous. To test this hypothesis, we infer molecular phylogenies (mitochondrial cytochrome b, ATP synthase 8/6, 12S, and 16S; nuclear rag2; total ∼4 kb) and estimate intercontinental divergence via molecular clocks (penalized-likelihood, Bayesian relaxed clock, and universal clock rates in fishes). Age ranges for cladogenesis of African and South American lineages are 15.4–2.5 my, far more recent than would be suggested by Gondwanan vicariance; thus, the distribution of galeichthyines must be explained by dispersal or more recent vicariant events. The nested position of the Peruvian species (Galeichthys peruvianus) within the African taxa is robust, suggesting that the direction of the dispersal was from Africa to South America. -

Revision of the Species of the Genus Cathorops (Siluriformes: Ariidae) from Mesoamerica and the Central American Caribbean, with Description of Three New Species

Marceniuk1 and Ricardo Betancur-R.2 The ariid genus Cathorops includes species that occur mainly in estuarine and freshwater habitats of the eastern and western coasts of southern Mexico, Central and South America. The species of Cathorops from the Mesoamerica (Atlantic slope) and Caribbean Central America are revised, and three new species are described: C. belizensis from mangrove areas in Belize; C. higuchii from shallow coastal areas and coastal rivers in the Central American Caribbean, from Honduras to Panama; and C. kailolae from río Usumacinta and lago Izabal basins in Mexico and Guatemala. Additionally, C. aguadulce, from the río Papaloapan basin in Mexico, and C. melanopus from the río Motagua basin in Guatemala and Honduras, are redescribed and their geographic distributions are revised. Sains Malaysiana 45(1)(2016): 1–7 Morphological Variations of Plicofollis Species (Siluriformes: Ariidae) in Peninsular Malaysia: An Insight into Truss Network Approach (Variasi Morfologi Spesies Plicofollis (Siluriformes: Ariidae) di Semenanjung Malaysia: Pemerhatian Pendekatan Rangkaian Truss) SITI WAZNAH ABDURAHMAN, MOHD AZMI AMBAK, SHAHREZA MD SHERIFF, SEAH YING GIAT, AHMAD AZFAR MOHAMED & AHMED JALAL KHAN CHOWDHURY* ABSTRACT Ariid catfishes, belong to family Ariidae is considered as one of the taxonomically problematic groups, which is still under review by fish taxonomist globally. Species level identification of some ariids often resulted in species misidentification because of their complex characters and very similar morphological characters within genera. A vigilant and detail observation is very important during the species level identification of ariid species. In these contexts, this study was carried out in order to determine the morphological variations of one of the ariid genera, Plicofollis, which have been giving misleading taxonomic information in the south-east Asian countries. A Truss network technique was used throughout the study period. The study was conducted based on 20 truss measurements using 22 to 23 specimens per species, namely P. argyropleuron, P. nella and P. tenuispinis found in Peninsular Malaysian waters. Morphological variations were determined using a multivariate technique of discriminant function analysis (DFA). The results obtained in this study showed that discriminant analysis using truss network measurements has produced very clear separations of all the species in Plicofollis group. Several important morphological characters have been identified, which represent body depth and caudal regions of the fish. The documentary evidences of these variables could be considered as the constructive functional features, which could enable us to assess more accurately to distinguish the species within this complex Ariidae family. -
A New Species of Ergasilus (Copepoda: Cyclopoida: Ergasilidae) from Coastal Fishes of the Mexican Pacific

A new species of the cyclopoid copepod genus Ergasilus von Nordmann, 1832 is described based on adult female specimens removed from the gills of the yellow snapper Lutjanus argentiventris (Peters) and the yellowfin snook Centropomus robalito Jordan et Gilbert from a Pacific coastal system of Mexico. The new species Ergasilus davidi sp. n. has a combination of characters that includes a two-segmented first leg endopod, a three-segmented fourth leg endopod, and the presence of a single seta on the first antennular segment. These characters are shared with 14 other congeners known mainly from Brazil and North America. It differs from these other species in the armature and ornamentation of legs 1 and 4, the shape of the body, and the structure and ornamentation of the antennae. Additional characters include a maxillar basis armed with blunt teeth, distally bent maxillular setae, and naked margins of first exopodal segments of legs 2–4. Previous regional records of Ergasilus sp. from both fish species are probably assignable to E. davidi. The prevalence and intensity of infection was estimated for both teleost species and agrees to previous data. Based on other records of the genus from several other teleost species in the surveyed area and adja- cent zones of the Eastern Pacific, it is presumed that the new species could have a wider range of hosts. -
