CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR 2009 SILVER BEAVER RECIPIENTS

Thomas Giugni has lived in Fairfield since 1967 and served the communities of Walnut Creek and Fairfield as a police officer for over 20 years until his retirement in 2008 as Captain. He is a member of the Fairfield Rotary Club and has been on the Board of Directors of the Fairfield Seahorses, a youth aquatics group. He serves on the Council Executive Board as District Chair for Chief Solano District. During his tenure, Chief Solano District earned Quality District for the first time in many years. He is a member Order of the Arrow. Tom has served on the staff or has been Course Director for JLT and NYLT staff from 2000-2006 and Wood Badge for the 21st Century staff, 2003-2008. He was Wood Badge Course Director for 2008 and a Philmont NAYLE adult leader for 2007 and 2008.

Pete Klein has held many positions since 2002 including Assistant Den Leader, Assistant Cubmaster, Cubmaster, Pack 247 (Kiwanis of Antioch); Scoutmaster Troop 247 (Holy Rosary Church, Knights of Columbus); Crew Adviser, Crew 884 (Friends of Crew 884); variously Unit Commissioner, District Committee Member, District Training Chair, District Commissioner; Assistant Scoutmaster Council Troop, National Jamboree, 2005; Assistant Scoutmaster Council Troop, World Centennial Jamboree, 2007; Wood Badge Course Director, 2007. He is a member of the Insurance Financial Analysts Association; Holy Rosary Catholic Church; and is Veterans Day parade coordinator with VFW Post 161. He has also been Associate Leader, Girl Scout Troops 847 and 417, Antioch; member-at-large on the Board of Directors for the Delta Skimmers Swim Club; and volunteer coordinator, DeLaSalle High School Parent’s Assoc.

R Paul Krey has held many positions in Marsh Creek District including Unit Commissioner, 1999-2003; District Committee Member, current; Merit Badge Counselor, 2004-2008; Committee Chair, Scoutmaster, Troop 792 & 793 (LDS Church-Brentwood Wards), 12 years. While he was District Chair during 2006-2007, Marsh Creek District earned the Quality District for the first time. His list of Community Service activities is extensive and includes the Brentwood School District, Brentwood Rotary, and member of the Chamber of Commerce. Paul is a member of the LDS Church and has served as Stake President. In recognition of outstanding community and school board service, a new Brentwood Elementary School was named for him: the Dr. R. Paul Krey Elementary School.

Susan Oki is a Den Leader, Webelos Leader, Cubmaster, Pack 0995, American Legion Post 246, 1995-1999; Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Committee Chair, Committee Member, Troop 0805, San Ramon Valley Kiwanis Club, 1999-present; Cub Scout Roundtable Staff, Roundtable Commissioner, Meridian District, 2000-present; Wood Badge staff 2005-2008. St Timothy’s Episcopal Church vestry 3 years, Lay Eucharistic Minister, Choir Member, devise and support computers and computer network used by church staff. Wood Badge staff 2005-2008; Brownsea Junior Leader Training staff; Boy Scout Leader Award; District Award of Merit; Scoutmaster’s Key; Scoutmaster Award of Merit; Distinguished Commissioner Award.

Anne O’Neal currently serves on the Council Executive Board as Vice President for Administration and as Popcorn Chair, FOS Chair, Committee Member and Den Leader with Pack 0693, Rotary Club of Hercules. She is also a Committee Member, Troop 0081. She is a Sunday School Teacher with St Joseph’s Catholic Church, a Classroom Volunteer, and a School Board Member. Her outstanding volunteerism extends to her professional career as Advisor, Phi Mu Fraternity, UC Berkeley, Founding Advisory Board Member, Center for Women in Engineering, UC Davis; Advisory Board Member, Dept of Chemical Engineering and Material Science, UC Davis; Executive Board Member, Center for Chemical Process Safety, American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Paul Roberts is a former star Scout who grew up in Napa. Scouting is one of his great passions and as a result, he spends more than 270 days per year on Scouting events. He has served on the unit level in Pack 7012 and Troop 7077 as well as helping found a new Troop, 7012. He has personally recruited more than eighty Scouts over the past seven years. Paul is currently Silver Gate District Chair and is very proud that his District has earned the Quality District Award for the third consecutive year. Paul is a James West Fellow and along with his wife, Esther, are members of the 1910 Society. Paul is a licensed architect with his own firm, Paul Roberts & Partners. He is doing pro bono work as the Architect and Master Planner for both the Camp Herms and Camp Wolfeboro projects. Paul is heavily involved in the Vallejo community serving on the Library Advisory Board and with the town’s recycling cooperative, VALCORE. His greatest job is seeing Scouts and their families out camping all over Northern California where they can enjoy the outdoors and learn about our planet’s great treasures. Paul also leads Scouts on many conservation activities including Silver Gate District’s annual Conservation Day, Earth Day and Coastal Cleanup events. Paul and his very patient wife, Esther, have two sons, Dakota and Skyler, and a daughter, Maya. Page 

Rob Schroeder is an Eagle Scout, 1969 and has been the Iron Horse District Chair since 2004. During this time, Iron Horse District has been a Quality District for three years. They have always been fully staffed by volunteers. He has been President, Walnut Festival Assn; President, Independent Insurance Agents of Contra Costa County; President, Walnut Creek Downtown Business Assn; Martinez City Council; Vice Mayor, City of Martinez. He is the current Mayor of the City of Martinez. He is also the Chair, Central Contra Costa Transit Authority; the Vice Chair, Remote Access Network (RAN) Board; and the Chair, Contra Costa Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO)

Carl Shellhorn has been Skipper, leader, mentor, teacher and role model for thousands of Bay Area Scouts over many years. He has participated in and provided numerous ocean-going long cruise Scouting events; has been the chair and vice-chair for the Ancient Mariner’s Regatta, the largest annual Sea Scout event in the western United States; hosted Napa Mini Regatta for past 15 years; has provided coaching, mentoring and leadership at other annual Sea Scout Regattas. He is a Sea Scout Quartermaster, 1968; Skipper, Ship 7090, a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West Parlor 62, 1992-present; recipient of the District Award of Merit and the National Venturing Leadership Award. He is an Elder, First Presbyterian Church; Honorary Member, Native Sons of the Golden West Parlor 62; Life Member, American Welding Society; Kiwanis Club Youth Service Award, 1996; KVON Radio (Napa) 2003 Citizen of the Year; participated with Coast Guard Aids to Navigation committee, Napa River Flood Control project; provided assistance to local Napa residents during river flooding disasters; organized and participated in Coast Guard local training events for youth.

John Spahr has continually provided significant leadership at the unit level since 1998, the district level since 1999, and the council level since 2000. He has been a dedicated and influential Scouter in many different roles throughout MDSC. He has served on the staff for many District and Council training events. He is currently a Unit Commissioner, Aklan District, and Scoutmaster, Troop 0200, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He has received the District Award of Merit and is a member Order of the Arrow. He is also a Colonel, USAF Reserve; a member and Sunday school teacher with Our Savior’s Lutheran Church; a member of the California Alumni Assn, UC Berkeley; and a basketball and baseball coach with the Lafayette-Moraga Youth Assn. Come Join the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council at the 2010 BSA National Jamboree! What: Pre-Jamboree Tour: The MDSC troops will start with a tour of historic east coast sites. The tour is likely to include: x New York: visit the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and much more. x Philadelphia: a visit to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. x Gettysburg: see the Electric Map, the Museum and a battlefield tour. x Washington D.C.: visit the Smithsonian Museums, the Capital, the White House, vari- ous monuments, Arlington Cemetery, the Holocaust Museum and Mount Vernon. The Jamboree: Daily activities include archery, , buckskin games, sailing, kay- aking, swimming, biking, confidence course, canoeing, fishing, rafting, , trap shooting, fishing, motocross, pioneering, conservation programs, rappelling towers, 5K run, orienteering, athletic contests and much more. You can visit over 100 booths at the world's largest Merit Badge Midway where every merit badge will be represented. Spend some time visiting an authentic American Indian vil- lage or the recreation of Brownsea Island, the first Boy Scout camp. Check out the always popular Army Adventure Area, the Disability Awareness Trail, or Scoutopia. Spectacular arena shows and daily stage shows will also keep you entertained. Patch trading and souve- nir collecting are other traditional Jamboree activities. Where: The Jamboree will be held at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia, as it has for every Jamboree since 1981. Fort A.P. Hill is less than an hour's drive south of Washington D.C. The Boy Scouts of America use almost 12,000 acres of the U.S. Army facility to accommodate nearly 40,000 Scouts and adults. When: The MDSC contingent will fly out of Oakland on July 18th, spend 5 full days touring the East Coast, then attend the Jamboree from Monday, July 26 through Wednesday, August 5, 2010. We will return to Oakland immediately after the Jamboree. Who: Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must be at least First Class Scouts. They must have com- pleted the sixth grade or be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2010, but not have reached their 18th birthday by July 27, 2010. Cost: The total cost for Scouts attending from the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council is $3,800. This bargain price includes: all airline travel, buses, accommodations, meals, tour guides, the Jamboree fee, troop and patrol equipment, and pre-Jamboree functions. Equipment: Troop and Patrol gear is included in the Jamboree package. Scouts will need to pack their own sleeping bag, clothes (including uniform), and personal toiletries. Page 10

PACK PARTICIPATES IN ARBOR DAY On April 24th, 2009, Pack 247 participated in the annual Arbor Day Celebration in Antioch. Each year, this event is sponsored by the Antioch Garden Club, and for the past four years, the Cub Scouts of Pack 247 have opened the event with a flag ceremony.

In addition, the boys each get to help the Garden Club members plant trees throughout the park. This year, the Garden Club chose the newly renovated City Park in Antioch. Page 12
