2019 Jazzbeat JAZZBEAT AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019 Victorian Jazz Club Inc . Established 1968 PRINT POST APPROVED NO. PP 336436 Inc. No. 0018623U ABN 67590508470 August - September gigs - Centre pages. Following the Annual General Meeting of the Victorian Jazz Club held on Thursday 25th July, the membership is hereby advised of the following administration and general committee appointments voted into office. Approximately 55 members attended the meeting, with recorded apologies from a further 15 members. President - Warren Denmead Vice President - Ian Richardson Treasurer - Larissa Beck Secretary - Liz Thommers General Committee: Graeme Akerman, Elspeth Coote, Geoff Tobin, Gordon Shaw, Marina Pollard,, Jaquie Krasse, Pam Young. Retiring President Marg Hendrie spoke of her experiences through 17 years of committee work with the VJC which embraced the various stages of the Club’s progression, listed the areas in which the Club has been able to thrive thanks to the magnificent bequest of the late John Newman, and predicted that the Club was in a very fortunate position to progress into the 21st Century with two worthwhile venues, updated vital equipment and a healthy bank balance. She reported that the Committee was currently working in a very positive and cohesive manner, and hoped that this good situation would continue. Those present were shown the inroads made into the computerised records of the Club’s membership , and were also given a “sneak preview” of the new updated Website which is nearing completion., Both were well received. Marg wished the incoming administration and committee well for their future endeavours, and after the voting of those present by a show of hands, agreed to continue as Editor of Jazzbeat on a two monthly basis. The meeting closed at 9.30.pm and was followed by the serving of light refreshments over which conversation was enjoyed. She was presented with a lovely floral arrangement, and both Kevin Bolton and Ken Mooney acknowledged her work for the Club over recent years. Their first gig at the Eltham Bowling Club was a sell-out receiving the most wonderful audience response possible, which required playing 20 minutes overtime with “encore” requests. Together with Shifafa - Jason Downes new combo with Sandra Talty, Richard Mander, Peter Baylor and Rob Moffat it was an absolutely brilliant evening of music and satire. This gig was followed on Sunday 30th with VJC’s event “ Swing Syncopation and Satire” at the Clayton RSL . Again a fabulous response from the audience, and the end result is that those who missed hearing them this time will have another opportunity as they have promised to return. Other bands on the Sun- day were Slip Dixies, Jam Jar and the Jazz Workshops band - all of whom played brilliantly and were very well received. Also in attendance on the day was a representative from the Bendigo Community Bank Ian Siebert, who presented this year’s sponsorship cheque to the Club and spoke in glowing terms of what the VJC was doing, and how pleased he was with what he saw during his visit. Ian was particularly impressed with the standard of the Workshops band under the guidance of Marina Pollard. Ron Jobe had his trusty camera at work on the day, and you’ll find pictures of the event inside the back cover of this issue. 3 AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019 REGULAR BAND GIGS AROUND MELBOURNE Band Day/date Venue Time Booking info Downbeat Big Band Tueadays Rising Sun Hotel, Sth .Melb 9696 2411 Thursdays—Rising Sun Hotel 1st Augusr Peter & Ashley Gaudion 6.30 - 9,.30 pm 9696 2411 Joe Ruberto & Ruby Page 8th August Charlotte Jane 6.30—9.30 pm 9696 2411 15th August Ruby Page 6.30 - 9.30 pm 9696 2411 22nd August Mel Searle 6.30—9.30 pm 9696 2411 29th August Yvette Johansson 6.30—9.30 pm 9696 2411 5th September Fem Belling 6.30—9.30 pm 9696 2411 12th September Ruby Page 6.30—9.30 pm 9696 2411 19th September Tamsin West 6.30—9.30 pm 9696 2411 26th September Julie O’Hara 6.30—9.30 pm 9696 2411 Joe Ruberto Trio 2nd August Charlotte |Jane 9080 4398 Jazz Lab, 27 Leslie St, Brunswick 9th August Miss George - Jaspers 14 “Goldie Place, Melbourne. 7th September Geelong Jazz Club with 0410 466251 phone Ruby Page.
