It is now the time and my great pleasure to acknowledge each of them and their efforts here. My long-time advisor John Fine set me on this path. John’s recovery, ten years ago, was instrumental in directing my plans for doctoral study. My parents, like many well-intended first generation immigrants before and after them, wanted me to become a different kind of doctor. Indeed, I made a now-broken promise to my father that I would follow in my mother’s footsteps, and study medicine. But then, I was his daughter, and like him, I followed my own dream. When made, the choice was not easy. But I will always be grateful to John for the years of unmatched guidance and support. In graduate school, I had the great fortune to study with outstanding teacher-scholars. It is my committee members whom I thank first and foremost: Pamela Ballinger, John Fine, Rudi Lindner, Müge Göcek, Mary Kelley, and Barbara Reeves-Ellington.

With the territorial law, it means a law made and applied by people not by the goverment. One of these, has been Lek Dukagjini’s Canon, which has been mainly used in Northern Albania, within the area in the same name, Dukagjin. It is also shown in one part of Kosovo too, principally, the zones nearby Albania’s administrative bounder. This paper is going to go through this experience trying to set out the possibly origin of Lek Dukagjini’s Canon, the grounds in where it has been applied, the way in which it has acted, the neccesity to live under Canon and the consequences if there is no deside to live inside it. We, also, are going to face the main figures of the period we are speaking, who acted for Canon or were against its implementation and existence. We are going to have in consideration their opinions and judgements looking for the power it has, even nowadays, in Albania. Keywords: Lek Dukagjini Canon, Albanian, Ethical Discussion, Gjergj Fishta, Prist, Nowadays. INTRODUCTION The Canon is called the set of principles, institutions, and norms that it has acted in Albania independently of the state's jurisdiction, both the Turkish and the later governments.

  • Learning to Read and Spell in Albanian, English and Welsh: the Effect Of
Learning to read and spell in Albanian, English and Welsh: the effect of orthographic transparency Lorenc Hoxhallari This thesis is submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Psychology, University of Wales, Bangor, UK. May, 2006 iii Abstract Effects of orthographic transparency on literacy acquisition were examined by comparing data from children learning to read in Albanian, Welsh, and English. The Welsh and especially Albanian orthographies are extremely transparent, whereas the English orthography is notorious for its lack of transparency. In the pilot study, twenty Year I Albanian children were given a reading test consisting of a 100-word stratified sample of decreasing written frequency. These children were able to read accurately 80% of the words; reading latency was a direct effect of word length (R2 =. 89); and errors tended to be mispronunciations rather than real word replacements, with hardly any null responses. These results were compared with Ellis and Hooper (2001), where the same design was used with English and Welsh children of the same age, but with one more year of formal reading instruction. The Albanian children read more words than the English and Welsh children, but they had longer reading latencies. Like the Welsh children, but unlike the English children, the Albanian children made more nonword errors. These results suggest that children acquire reading faster the more transparent the orthography, and that shallow orthographies promote an initial reliance on a phonological recoding strategy. The main study examined reading, spelling, phonological and orthographic skills of 6-, 8- and 10-year old Albanian, English and Welsh children.

  • Introduction: the Search for a Narrative of Transition 1
Notes Introduction: The Search for a Narrative of Transition 1. Keith Brown (2003) offers a helpful corrective study to this history. 2. With respect to Mihal Grameno, Skendi’s outdated work (1967: 210–214) relies on problematic sources that inevitably come to certain conclusions about his motivations over the summer of 1908. One of the more question- able sources is the purported memoirs of Mihal Grameno (1959), published many years after his death by the fiercely revisionist regime of the Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha. 3. Many post- Ottoman states faced considerable difficulties with imposing new ethnonational criteria to their citizenship regime, largely because large pockets of still polyglot and heterogeneous communities violently resisted state efforts to impose a singular ethnonational “identity” on them. Of the more interesting cases of former Ottoman subjects “navigating” national- ity, the Republic of Turkey (Gingeras 2009), Bulgaria (Dragostinova 2009), and Greece (Hirschon 1989) stand out. For a theoretical explanation of this decidedly “modern” practice, see Brubaker (1996). 4. Mignolo (2000) suggests how to effectively realize this reorientation of our focus. 5. Unlike most academics, writers such as Leo Tolstoy treat history as a multi- leveled complex of human emotions, possibilities, and structures. As dem- onstrated by Morson’s insightful reading of Tolstoy’s strategies to deal with time and perspective in “historical” events (1996: 155–162, 271–272), the creative writer has often proven that it is possible to master the complexities of representing the passage of time and thus shine an uncomplimentary light on the narrative methods used by many historians and social scientists.

A general overview of the literature for children in the fi rst part of the 20th century MSc. Rudina Alimerko (PhD Candidate) University “Ismail Qemali“ Vlorë, Albania Abstract Although in the fi rst decades of the 20th century the Albanian literature for children did not recognize any disti nguished literary work, a series of liberati on insurrecti ons in north and south as well as the Declarati on of Independence in 1912 show the great eff orts of our Renaissance fi gures who were teachers, ideologists and acti ve parti cipants in the armed movement. All this big issues in the life of Albanian people as well as their freedom-loving spirit become the inspirati on of many themes, details and moti ves in the Albanian literature for children. Some of well-known representati ves of our nati onal Renaissance such as: Çajupi, Asdreni, Fishta, Mjeda, Gurakuqi, Xanoni, J.Bageri etc., conti nued writi ng even during the fi rst decades of the 20th century. In their poeti c and literary writi ngs, one could disti nguish the romanti c spirit of the exuberance of the love for the country, for the nature, for the universe, and someti mes there could be disti nguished even a realisti c tone which described the Albanian life. Throughout all this literary work, the love for the country was connected with the love for the language and with the great eff orts that were made for founding Albanian schools, with the reverberati on of the wars for freedom, with the descripti on of nature, birds and fl owers as well as with the inspirati on taken from the fantasti cal and fabulous world of the world literature.

Dr. University of Gjakova, Faculty of Education, Professor of Albanian language, Kosovo Abstract In our paper we will talk about the whole process of standardization of the Albanian language, where it has gone through a long historical route, for almost a century. When talking about standard Albanian language history and according to Albanian language literature, it is often thought that the Albanian language was standardized in the Albanian Language Orthography Congress, held in Tirana in 1972, or after the publication of the Orthographic Rules (which was a project at that time) of 1967 and the decisions of the Linguistic Conference, a conference of great importance that took place in Pristina, in 1968. All of these have influenced chronologically during a very difficult historical journey, until the standardization of the Albanian language.Considering a slightly wider and more complex view than what is often presented in Albanian language literature, we will try to describe the path (history) of the standard Albanian formation under the influence of many historical, political, social and cultural factors that are known in the history of the Albanian

However, it should be emphasized that under a strictly administrative- centralized state, all decisions, solutions and directions in all aspects of administration were given by the central government and were in line with state policies. Thus, among other things, within the framework of the policy of national equality was the inducting education in the mother tongue language for all Yugoslav nationalities as a part of compulsory primary education, i.e. in the overall educational policy. In addition to textbooks as a basic educational tool, more children's magazines started to be published for the purposes of education, as an additional teaching material but at the same time as an educational tool whose purpose was to raise the youngest generation in the new socialist spirit. This educational program also encompassed the Albanian population in Yugoslavia, and in areas where it lived in greater concentration, including PR / SR Macedonia; more primary schools on Albanian Language were opened.2 1 Устав Федеративне Народне Републике Југославије, Београд, 1946, члан 21, 9.

One of these, one could argue, is chess. Given a massive impetus due to the popularity of the television series The Queen’s Gambit, many people have once again taken up the time-weathered sport. As sales of chessboards, -computers, and strategy guides have skyrocketed, new players have been confronted with the complexity of the ‘noble game’, searching for ways to encapsulate and grasp its intricately sublime nature. Stepping into the fray of the game, the novice immediately understands that chess is comprised of two halves: the need for a long-term strategy, and simultaneously the necessity to always be prepared to adapt or alter course should one be confronted with an unexpected move.
