Mercy’s Sophomore Religion class visited Gateway-Longview. Gateway-Longview’s main purpose is to build strong families and strong communities. They are concerned with keeping the children’s safety a top priority. The ideal is to improve the situation at the child’s original home, but if necessary, Gateway is responsible for finding the child foster parents and a suitable home. Gateway also supplies a safe place for children to interact with their families until the situation improves. It takes a special person to be a foster parent. Foster parents are people who can provide temporary care and love for their foster children. They must be car- ing and want to make a difference in the child’s life. Patience is a must, and there is a very strict “hands-off” policy. Most of all, foster parents must know that there is MMA Sophomores volunteer always a possibility that their foster child may be taken away from them and given at Gateway-Longview back to the original family. Early Wednesday morning, our Religion class arrived at Gateway- Longview’s Niagara Street location. We watched a video explaining to us what Gate- way was all about. Here we learned that Gateway works to help both the child and the child’s parents to improve the situation at home. We also learned that it is not easy to be an adoptive parent and it really takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Our class of sixteen then relocated to the Gateway-Longview Family Resource Center on East Ferry Street. Here we sat down for a prayer and a nice lunch, and then we began our work. As a group, our class began organizing a closet full of clothes donated to the center. Our goal was to make the clothes accessible to those who were in need of them. When our class began, the closet was in shambles, and by the end of the day almost all of the clothes were sorted and hung up neatly. All smiles at the Senior Prom This was very difficult because we sorted all the clothes into four sections: men’s, women’s, girls’ and boys’. These sections were then separated by size, and all the winter clothing was removed from the closet. It was very fulfilling because we knew that we were really helping those in need. One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is to clothe the naked. In a joint effort between the entire community and the MMA class, we feel that we truly did clothe the naked. People who come to these centers are really in need of clothing and we made this help available to them. Of course our work would have been nothing with- out the clothes donated by the rest of the community, so it was definitely a joint effort. This experience definitely helped us as class to grow in many of the Hall- marks of a Mercy Education, including Dedication to Christian Values. As Christians, we cannot just allow ourselves to watch other people suffering. By doing this, our Ashley and Alyssa at Baccalaureate– Religion class really acted on their beliefs. Another Hallmark pertaining to this ex- “friends ‘til the end” perience is Commitment to Service. As a class we gave up a day of school to serve our community. We were required to make up all of the work we missed, but that was a sacrifice we were willing to make. Our experience was inspired by Scripture. In Exodus 22:20-27 it says, “Show justice and mercy toward strangers, orphans, widows, neighbors.” Just be- cause we are in a more comfortable situation, it does not allow us to just sit around. The children that are in these situations did nothing to put themselves there. They are completely helpless and deserve a better life. By volunteering at Gateway we feel we followed the passage, “Be doers, not only hearers of the word.”(Jas 1:22-27) Psalm 103 states, “Yahweh is always on the side of the oppressed.” As a class, we offered the gifts of our time and efforts. In return, we were given knowledge and the satisfaction of knowing we were really helping the children. It made us realize that many people are struggling and we are called to help them. In Molly gets the “thumbs up” from giving, we truly did receive. Lauren at a recent Lacrosse game

Volunteer Host Families Needed Established in 1985, The Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI) is a non-profit international education exchange organization dedicated to the promotion of cultural understanding, academic development and world peace. CCI is recognized by the U.S. Department of State as an official exchange visit program sponsor. Based in Chicago, Illinois, CCI organizes high school exchange, short-term group home-stay, internship, work & travel, and language study programs in the United States and in over 30 countries around the world. CCI has also committed itself to promote the green movement within all of our programs through our Greenheart initiative. High School Year, High School Semester and Short Term Hosting Opportunities Available Giving to these young people pays back such dividends in terms of friendships, meaningful memories, and shared experiences. The requirements of a family are to have a bed for the student, (private rooms are not necessary), have room at the table for one more and be willing to enfold the student into the daily life of the family not as a guest but as another member of the family. Over 95% of all stu- dents, when they return to their home countries, say that the experience of living with their host family was the best part of the program. It is the time spent with the host family that cements the experience in the memories of the student. All students travel with their own spending money, they are fully insured. They have all studied English but are hoping for opportuni- ties to use that English with their host families. They have filled out applications that tell something about themselves and interested host families can choose a student who would best fit in with the lifestyle of the family.
