Abbeyleix is a town in County Laois, approximately 14 km south of Portlaoise.
Portlaoise is the county town of County Laois and is the most densely populated town in the Midlands Region. It was an important town in the medieval period as the site of the Fort of Maryborough.
These days, Portlaoise is a commercial centre, with the economy dominated by the service sector, and an important shopping, transport, events and conference hub.
County Laois is located in the south of the Midlands Region of Ireland in the province of Leinster, and was formerly known as Queen’s County. The modern county takes its name from Loígis, a medieval kingdom.
The county is landlocked and, uniquely, does not border any other county which touches the coast.
County Laois is home to a number of places of interest such as Slieve Bloom Mountains and the Rock of Danamase. Many festivals are also held in the County, including the famous ‘Electric Picnic’ music festival
