  • 1 De Bello Becco
De Bello Becco: a French foundation in the Boyne Valley Geraldine Stout Introduction This paper discusses the history of the little known French Cistercian foundation of de Bello Becco near Drogheda, and the role it played in the commercial development of the Boyne valley and in the international maritime trade during the medieval period. The paper also presents the results of a recent geophysical survey and sets out a course for future investigation of the site. Historical background The Cistercian foundation of de Bello Becco, also known as Beaubec, a daughter house of the convent of de Bello Becco in Normandy, France, was located in the townland of Bey More, Co. Meath (fig. 1, ITM 709546 772877) (St. John Brooks, 1953, 148; McCullen, 2011, 383). There is no known foundation date for this monastic site but a grant by Walter De Lacy to the church of SS Mary and Laurence of Beaubec and the monks residing there on the lands in Gillekeran has been dated to after 1215 (Dryburgh and Smith, 2006, 23). This includes a further grant of a burgage in Mornington (villa Marenari) along with the liberty of a boat for their own use, free from tolls, customs and demands and freedom to access Walter De Lacy’s lands to buy and sell merchandise. The placename Gillekeran suggests that this Cistercian foundation was on an earlier ecclesiastical site possibly associated with St Ciaran (www.monasticon.celt.dias.ie). The 1215 grant is alluded to in a confirmation grant by Henry III in 1235 (Sweetman, 1875, 341). Walter De Lacy bestowed this relatively small grant of land on the Cistercians for the good of his soul, and those of their relatives and ancestors.

  • Doneraile Park the Long St. Leger Connection Seamus Crowley
IRISH FORESTRY 2015, VOL. 72 Doneraile Park The long St. Leger connection Seamus Crowley The arrival of St. Legers in Ireland When Henry VIII of England decided to suppress the monasteries and break away from the Church of Rome, he gave the job of implementing the process to his “trusty and well beloved servant” Sir Anthony St. Leger of Ulcomb in Kent who was reputed to be “a wise and warie gentleman”. Sir Anthony, in his capacity as a member of the Kent Grand Jury, helped to find a “true bill” against Ann Boleyn, which allowed Henry to have her executed in 1536 – a trusty servant indeed! Having finished the job of suppressing the monasteries in England, Sir Anthony was sent to Ireland to render similar service in 1537. He supervised the dissolution of the monasteries in areas subject to the King’s writ and also succeeded in getting the Irish chieftains to accept Henry as King of Ireland. Before that the English King was described as Lord of Ireland, which gave him much less authority. Later Sir Anthony St. Leger was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and from which time on the St. Legers had a presence in Ireland. When Sir Anthony St. Leger returned to England, one of his sons, William, who later did not feature in Sir Anthony’s will, was “catered for” in Ireland and took part in both government and army. William’s son, Sir Antony St. Leger’s grandson, Sir Warham St. Leger remained in Ireland until his death in 1600. He died following a single combat engagement with Hugh Maguire of Fermanagh outside the gates of Cork.

He escorted O'Neill Crowley from his hiding place in Glenagare to Kilclooney Wood in 1867. I was educated at Killavullen National School where I attended until I was about 16 years of age. I then went to the Munster Civil Service College where I remained for about 11/2years. I entered the Post Office Service as a telephonist at Killarney in 1906.. After about six months I was transferred to Mallow. Early in 1919 I was appointed Supervising Telephonist at Mallow and I continued to serve in this capacity until I was superannuated in 1945. In the years prior to and following 1916 I took a keen interest in the national cultural organisations in the district. I was a member of the Gaelic League and was Captain of the Thomas Davis Camogie Club in 1914. My first contact with the Irish Volunteer Organisation was made through my brother who was a wireless operator. This was early in 1918 when he put me in touch with Tom Hunter and Danny Shinnick who were the Volunteer leaders in the Castletownroche-Killavullen area at the time.
