KAMIKAZE GROUND CREW New World Records 80438 Madam Marie’s Temple of Knowledge While the artists of every generation must invent their own means for self-expression, that responsibility is complicated by the necessity to sift through the precedents and legacies of previous generations. That challenge can be especially taxing for musicians who have come of age in the so- called postmodern era, when history and world culture seem to be contracting into an undifferentiated blur under the influence of instantaneous mass communication. How do you come up with something new under the sun, not only in the shadow of everyone from J.S. Bach to John Cage, from Louis Armstrong to John Coltrane, and from Robert Johnson to Frank Zappa, but also when virtually all ethnic traditions around the globe--Bulgarian choirs, Balinese gamelan, North Indian improvisation, South African pop, Tibetan chants--are at your fingertips? In Madam Marie's Temple of Knowledge, the members of the Kamikaze Ground Crew have succeeded in forging a musical language that is at the same time rife with familiar references and bristling with novel ideas and innovative constructions. In the ten years since they first came together as the horns-and- percussion pit band for the Flying Karamazov Brothers, they have expanded dramatically that original nouveau vaudeville vision of musical and theatrical collaboration. What has emerged is an extraordinarily eclectic ensemble that draws from a diverse array of sources for a variety of special projects, including concert performances, theater productions (such as a 1993 joint venture with the Flying Karamazovs in a version of Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov), and recordings, including this, their fourth as the Kamikaze Ground Crew.

  • MTO 22.4: Thomas, Text and Temporality
Volume 22, Number 4, December 2016 Copyright © 2016 Society for Music Theory * Margaret E. Thomas NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.16.22.4/mto.16.22.4.thomas.php KEYWORDS: Tom Waits, rhythm, hypermeter, popular music, lyrics, rhythmic irregularity, voice ABSTRACT: This article considers phrase structure, hypermeter, and lyrics in three songs by Tom Waits, examining the particular ways that temporal regularity and irregularity interact with poetic structure, musical style, and vocal performance in Waits’s music. Subtle and ambiguous hypermetrical shifts are uncovered in “Green Grass,” whereas “Black Wings” utilizes conspicuously conflicting phrase lengths to enhance its textural meaning. In “Dead and Lovely” Waits creates temporal disturbances by shifting the placement of four-measure phrases relative to hypermetrical downbeats and upbeats. Received July 2016 Introduction [1.1] American singer-songwriter Tom Waits opens his 2004 song “Green Grass” with this quatrain: Lay your head where my heart used to be Hold the earth above me Lay down in the green grass Remember when you loved me The four lines—each a directive—draw the listener into the song as they unfurl a rambling narrative packed with evocative imagery, wistful sorrow, and intimacy. It is a bold opening, and it encapsulates much of what is distinctive about Waits: the subject matter is dark and perplexing, and the poetic structure is irregular and a bit playful. The lines have 9, 6, 6, and 7 syllables, respectively. Their rhyme scheme plays out in two layers: a literal aaba pattern (“be,” “me,” “grass,” “me”), and an elongated near-rhyme pattern in lines two and four (“above me” and “loved me”).

  • Woyzeck Bursts Onto the Ensemble Theatre Company Stage
MEDIA RELEASE CONTACT: Josh Gren [email protected] or 805.965.5400 x103 ELECTRIFYING TOM WAITS MUSICAL WOYZECK BURSTS ONTO THE ENSEMBLE THEATRE COMPANY STAGE March 25, 2015 – Santa Barbara, CA — The influential 19th Century play about a soldier fighting to retain his humanity has been transformed into a tender and carnivalesque musical by the legendary vocalist, Tom Waits. “If there’s one thing you can say about mankind,” the show begins, “there’s nothing kind about man.” The haunting opening phrase is the heart of the thrilling, bold, and contemporary English adaptation of Woyzeck – the classic German play, being presented at Ensemble Theatre Company this April. Inspired by the true story of a German soldier who was driven mad by army medical experiments and infidelity, Georg Büchner’s dynamic and influential 1837 poetic play was left unfinished after the untimely death of its author. In 2000, Waits and his wife and collaborator, Kathleen Brennan, resurrected the piece, wrote music for an avant-garde production in Denmark, and the resulting work became a Woyzeck musical and an album entitled “Blood Money.” “[The music] is flesh and bone, earthbound,” says Waits. “The songs are rooted in reality: jealousy, rage…I like a beautiful song that tells you terrible things. We all like bad news out of a pretty mouth.” Woyzeck runs at the New Vic Theater from April 16 – May 3 and opens Saturday, April 18. Jonathan Fox, who has served as ETC’s Executive Artistic Director since 2006, will direct the ambitious, wild, and long-awaited musical. “It’s one of the most unusual productions we’ve undertaken,” says Fox.

Once the effects of the new wave were fully absorbed, it became apparent that the world of singer-songwriters would never be the same again. A conceptual mood had taken over the scene, and that mood's predecessors were precisely the Bob Dylans, the Neil Youngs, the Leonard Cohens, the Tim Buckleys, the Joni Mitchells, who had not been the most popular stars of the 1970s. Instead, they became the reference point for a new generation of "auteurs". Women, in particular, regained the status of philosophical beings (and not only disco-divas or cute front singers) that they had enjoyed with the works of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Suzy Gottlieb, better known as Phranc (1), was the (Los Angeles-based) songwriter who started the whole acoustic folk revival with her aptly-titled Folksinger (? 1984/? 1985 - nov 1985), whose protest themes and openly homosexual confessions earned her the nickname of "all-american jewish-lesbian folksinger". She embodied the historic meaning of that movement because she was a punkette (notably in Nervous Gender) before she became a folksinger, and because she continued to identify, more than anyone else, with her post- feminist and AIDS-stricken generation in elegies such as Take Off Your Swastika (1989) and Outta Here (1991).

Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2019 0 ABSTRACT This thesis employs popular culture texts (works of literature, film, and popular music) as companions to the understanding of contemporary America. It is about artworks that form a cultural resistance that enables the appreciation of social issues and cultural decline in the United States. The authors of these artworks are novelist Paul Auster, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, and musician Tom Waits. Born between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, in different parts of the United States, Auster, Jarmusch, and Waits have produced a series of works that share strong similarities. In their novels, films, and songs, they portray an imagined “Other America” that is in stark contrast with the idyllic vision of the American Dream. Their America does not coincide with conventional middle-class values and goals of success, money and social upward mobility. It is an open, tolerant, and egalitarian country inhabited by marginalized “other Americans” who never escape from poverty and failure.
