ABSTRACT

This thesis is entitled "An Analysis of Supernatural Power in Stephen King's Novel Carrie and Risa Saraswati's Novel Gerbang Dialog Danur: A Comparative Literature". In this research, the author analyzed the supernatural powers in two novels Carrie by Stephen King and Gerbang Dialog Danur by Risa Saraswati. This research uses the theory of Supernatural Power by Murray. The purposes of this thesis are to find out supernatural power portrayed in both novels and to find out the similarities and differences of supernatural power in both. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were in the form of words, phrases, sentences and quotations. The result shows there are two kinds of supernatural power in Carrie‟s novel, which are Telekinesis and Telepathy. While in Gerbang Dialog Danur is sixth sense. Based on the analysis, it is found that the novels show similarities and differences regarding forms of the elements in novels.

Skripsi ini berjudul “An Analysis of Supernatural Power in Stephen King’s Novel Carrie and Risa Saraswati’s Novel Gerbang Dialog Danur: A Comparative Literature”. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menganalisa tentang kekuatan supernatural yang digambarkan dalam dua novel Carrie oleh Stephen King dan Gerbang Dialog Danur oleh Risa Saraswati. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori kekuatan supernatural oleh Murray. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan kekuatan supernatural yang tergambar di kedua novel dan untuk menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan tentang kekuatan supernatural di kedua novel. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, kalimat dan kutipan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan ada dua jenis kekuatan supernatural di novel Carrie yaitu telekinesis dan telepati. Sedangkan dalam novel Gerbang Dialog Danur adalah indera ke enam. Berdasarkan analisis, ditemukan bahwa ada kesamaan dan perbedaan berdasarkan element novel.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the Study

Literature mostly is defined as the entirely of written expression. Richart

Taylor in his book Understanding the Elements of Literature (1981 : 1) says that literature like other arts, is essentially an imaginative act, that is an act of the writer‟s imagination in selecting, ordering and interpreting life experience. In the case of literature, word are interpreting life-expression and it makes little different whether those words are recorded in the living memory of a people or by some mechanical means such as writing, sound recording, etc.

There are many of literary genres and one of them is novel. Martha Pardede in her the book Literature: In Introductory Material (2016 : 30) says that the novel is a pure of art. It is self contained. It contains within itself everything that is necessary for its comprehension and enjoyment. It relates and reports human action. Novel is a free art. The novelist is at liberty to deal with any incident and episode, with any passion or experience with anything he pleases and to handle his story in any manner he likes.

There are five elements in literature, which are Supernaturalism, Naturalism,

Idealism, Realism and Existentialism. One of them is Supernaturalism. The writer discusses about two novels with a same motive, Supernatural Power. The first novel is Carrie by Stephen king (1974) and the second novel is Danur by Risa Saraswati

(2017). Both novels have a different way of supernatural power and how to use the power.

According to Murray (1998:5) supernatural means that some power which is not natural and that it is outside the order of natual on account of direct divine intervention. The God does not normally intervene in the workings of natre so that the supernatural is not a kind of explanation for things we do not understand. Miracle and heaven also called supernatural. People who have Supernatural power are a special gift that given by God. The power can be used to help people or to kill someone. Smith (2000:17) stated that supernatural can be said as one of fictions often associated with the paranormal. It includes ghosts, extraordinary human abilities or fantasy creatures.

Alfian Rokmansyah in his book Studi dan Pengkajian Sastra, Perkenalan

Awal Terhadap Ilmu Sastra (2013 : 53) said that Supernaturalism say that in this world there are supernatural being, which are higher or more powerful than real world and can to control the nature, then it becomes the nature which is the human occupied at this time.

Nowadays, people still believe with people who have a supernatural power like shaman, ghost or spirit and paranormal. Although human had been has a religion but human still believe with a supernatural power and the human who have a supernatural power. Human with a supernatural power is very special person than other because it is a special talent from God than given since born. Supernatural means that something in above and it is more than natural. It calls unnatural which implies something that is wrong or abnormal for human. The supernatural can‟t be accepted by our mind and it is not logic for human. Ghost, God, a genie, miracle,

magical potions and witchcraft are supernatural. Supernatural also divided into 2 sides. First is a positive supernatural like Miracle that only owned by God.

Second is negative supernatural like Paranormal or shaman. Actually some of paranormal or shaman always uses the supernatural power for a bad thing like to kill people or make them forget with herself.

Supernatural is one of the Gothic Genre. Gothic novel marked by the pointed arch, stained window, slender spires, flying butter, which is intended to give a sense of mystery. It deals with intricate traceries, wealth and variety of detail and flexibility of spirit. Gothic fiction, which is largely known by the subgenre of Gothic horror, is a genre or mode of literature and film that combines fiction and horror, death and at times romance. Supernatural beings monsters, demons, witches, ghosts, banshees, vampires and other Supernatural creatures often play parts in Gothic fiction.

The writer feels interest to discuss two novels about Supernatural power from

America and Indonesia country such as Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur novels. In both novels tell about the main character who has a Supernatural power. Carrie‟s novel use the power for a bad thing because she uses the power to kill everybody who always mock her and Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novel use the power for the good things because she wants to be a friend with the ghost.

The first novel is Carrie, written by Stephen King and published in 1974.

Stephen King is American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, science fiction and fantasy. He was born in September 21, 1947 and he is a famous

American author. He has published 58 novels and he has written around 200 short stories. Carrie is his first novel written in 5 April 1974 that tells about a girl with supernatural power. Stephen King called as the "King of Horror” because he has

written many of horror Novels. The famous novels namely It, Pet Sematary, The

Green Mile, Carrie, Misery, Bag of Bones and Lord of the Flies.

Carrie‟s novel tells about a girl who has a supernatural power who can to move every things with her mind and read people‟s mind. Carrie is a main character, she is very shy and quiet girl who always be a bullying object at school. She lived only with her mother. Margaret is a strange mother figure and has many unusual habits. It is because she was made a big mistake before she married. When she knew that she was pregnant actually she wants to kill the baby because the father of the baby has left her. When she tried to kill the baby, the baby can prevent it because the baby has a power since born. Margaret always sees sin in everyone. She also very fanatic mother and see the blood as a symbol of sin. When Carrie was menstruation, she was panic to see the blood. All of her friends are laughing at her and mock her.

She doesn‟t know it because her mother was never told about it. When she told to her mother, she was very angry and suggested that she had made a big sin. Then her mother locked her in a prayer room and forced her to pray so that God forgive her sin. Carrie grew up into a strange teenage girl because of her mother attitude. She doesn‟t have friends because she was always shunned and considered strange by his classmates. One night at prom night, she felt very happy because she can go with a handsome man that she like, but her friend made her friend made a big mistake. At the time she uses the power of telekinesis to do revenge. She was very angry and tried to kill all of them with the strength power that she has. She also kill her mother when her mother try to kill her. Finally, Carrie regret with everything that she did.

The supernatural power in this novel is Telekinesis and Telepathy power that owned by Carrie as a main character. Telekinesis is a power that can move many

objects from a distance using the mind. Telepathy is a power that is able to read a person‟s mind. Actually she doesn‟t about the power because she is very introvert and doesn‟t have a friend. Also it because of she has a strange mother who always see sin in everybody. When, in Prom night she was very happy because she comes to the party with a man that she likes. She was very happy but when her friends make a mistake with her suddenly she felt very emotional and show up her power to kill all of them.

The second novel is Gerbang Dialog Danur, written by Risa Saraswati and published in 2017. Risa is Indonesian writer and also a singer. The story tells about a girl that Sixth sense and can communicate with many ghosts. Many people think that she is very strange because she always speak alone and tell that there is a ghost in everywhere. She has six friends and they are ghosts. Risa live with her grandmother and the house is a Holland building. The ghost came from Holland. Everyday, Risa spend her time to talk and play with them. She also give some solution when the ghosts come and ask her. Actually Risa doesn‟t want see the ghost. She wants grow up like the normal child who have many friends and play together. But, finally she felt enjoy with her friend because they are the kind ghosts.

The supernatural power in the novel is Sixth Sense that owned by Risa as a main character. She is an Indigo child. Risa can communicate with many ghosts. The power that Risa has made her can see and communicate with ghosts. Actually, Risa tried to pretend that she didn‟t see the ghost, but she can‟t do it. The power make her must live with ghosts forever. Gerbang Dialog Danur novel is a true story from the writer when she was a child.

In this thesis the writer uses a comparative literature to look the similarities and differences about Supernatural power in both of novels. According to Aang

Faithful Islam In Introduction to Literature book (2016:98) say that Weisstein (1973) states that comparative literature is a branch of literary history; it is study of relations of inspiration spiritual, the study between the works and the inspiration of the lives of different writers whom were created different literary works. In addition, comparative literature draws based on investigating various literatures in some works of the writers.

Comparative literature is part of a literary study that studies how to analyze literary works that are thought to have the same effect on two or more literary works from different countries and different authors. It is intended that we can know the comparisons of the literary works by comparing the similarities of the elements and comparing the differences. In comparative literature the study can be done using only two different literary works.

The writer interested to compare two novels Carrie and Gerbang Dialog

Danur because there is a same motif about supernatural. Carrie‟s novels from

America that written by Stephen King and Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novel from

Indonesia and written by Risa Saraswati. In this research the writer discuss about the supernatural power portrayed in both novels. Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur novels have similarities and differences based on elements in novel. The interesting things to discuss about supernatural because it still exists until nowadays and still believe of many people. People with supernatural power also still exist until now.

Second is because both novels have a different period and nation. Carrie‟s novel happened in the past and Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novel happens in nowadays. The

third because the kind of supernatural power that owned by main character is different. In Carrie‟s novel the power is Telekinesis and telepathy and in Gerbang

Dialog Danur‟s novel the power is about Sixth sense.

1.2. Problem of the Study

In accordance with the background of the study above, the writer formulates the problems of the study as follows:

1. What are supernatural powers portrayed in Carrie and Gerbang Dialog

Danur novels?

2. What are the similarities and differences of supernatural power in both of

novels?

1.3. Objective of the Study

In accordance with the problems of the study above, the objectives of this study are:

1. To find out supernatural powers portrayed in Carrie and Gerbang Dialog

Danur novels.

2. To find out the similarities and differences of supernatural power in both of

novels.

1.4. Scope of the Study

In this research, the writer limits the problem about supernatural power

(Telekinesis, Telepathy and Sixth sense) in main character as portrayed in Carrie and

Gerbang Dialog Danur novels. The writer uses comparative literature theory and discusses the novels based on elements of the novel.

1.5. Significance of the Study

a. Theoritically

1. To inform about the way of supernatural motif portrayed in both of novels.

2. To give information about similarities and differences of elements from two

novels with theory of Comparative.

b. Practically

1. This study can be used as a reference for the next researchers who want to

conduct the research about the study of supernatural power by using

comparative literature.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1. Theory of Literature

In the book How to read World Literature by David Damrosch ( 2009 : 6) says that Literature in simply means is written with letters really any text at all. But in its cultural sense, „literature” refers first and foremost to poems, play and prose fiction- work of creative imagination written in heightened and pleasurable language.

Warren (1949) states that literature and literary study are distinguished by two activities, literature relates to creativity and art while literary study links to sciences or specific discipline of knowledge. Literature cannot be studied at all, which means that we can only read, enjoy and appreciate it. In contrast, literary study can be defined as knowledge to consider The Second Creation. This creations created by writers in their literary works.

In the book Introduction to Literature by Aangg Fatihul Islam (2016: 5) says that According to Warren, Darma (2004) states that the scope of literature is creating creativity, meanwhile literary study is studying literature as the object. It is identified that literature focuses on the creativity, whereas literary study focuses on the science.

Literary study is scientific logic. The example of literary are drama „Romeo and

Juliet‟ (William Shakespeare), poetry „Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening‟

(Robert Frost), novel „Song of Solomon‟ (Toni Morison), short story „The Yellow

Wallpaper‟ (Charlotte Perkins Gilman) and essay of literary criticism.

There are three genre of literary study; literary theory, literary criticism and literary history. The form of literary study is literary criticism (critical approach of

literature) such as: formalism, structuralism, new criticism, semiotic, deconstruction, new historicism, feminism, gender, comparative literature 9 the study of literary comparation) etc. literary study has five branches : General Literature, National

Literature, Regional Literature, World Literature and Comparative Literature.

Richart Taylor in his book Understanding the Elements of Literature (1981

:1) says that literature “like other arts, is essentially an imaginative act, that is an act of the writer‟s imagination in selecting, ordering and interpreting life experience”.

So, we can see that Taylor in defining literature focuses on the activity and the process of creating literary works.

Related to the nature of literature, Warren (1949) stated that there are some ways to define „literature‟. The first one is to define „literature‟ as everything in print.

In this way, we shall be able to study the „medical profession in the fourteenth century‟ or „planetary motion in the early Middle Ages or witchcraft in Old and New

England. According to Greenlaw‟s theory and the practice of many discipline areas, literary study has thus become not exclusively related to the history of civilization but certainly identical with it. Such literary study is only in the sense that it is occupied with printed or written matter, necessarily the primary source of most history. Most of literary histories involved the contribution of some personages, such as: philosophers, historians, psychologist, theologians, moralists, politicians and even some scientists.

Link to the great literary works, Warren (1949) states that the good literary works contain of esthetic values and to fulfill this criteria need some elements:

a. Disinterested contemplation

Disinterested contemplation is an effort of writers in writing literary works,

whereas story which created by the writers as objective contemplation result,

neutral and have no certain purpose or tendency. b. Esthetic distance

Esthetic distance defined as an exertion of the writers in their literay works.

Whereas story which created as result from objective contemplation, neutral

and do not have tendency or certain purpose and not show or harass certain

create literary works endeavor to arrange their writing in good composition,

so that readers will get pleasure in his/her literary works. d. Fictionality

Fictionality is the writers‟ effort to create fiction unsure in their literary

works. It means that the writers insert some fictionality in their works,

because it is as a balance of the truth and also second world created by the

writers. e. Universalia

Universalia is things that happen in the past, now and in the future and will

keep on wherever and whenever. The examples like love, death and mate. f. Unity in Variety

Unity in variety is a text construct which created by the writers, so that

literary works have coherency namely deep harmony between form and

content, so literary works will construct good from like a „jug‟.

2.2. Brief Description of Novel

According to John Peck and Martin Coyle In the book Literary Term and

Criticism (1984 : 102) says that The novel reflects a move away from an essentially religious view of life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. Most novels are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves. The novel was the first of the two to develop and from the end of the Neo-Classical period it was recognized as a major literary form. It is normally a prose work of quite some length and complexity which attempt to reflect and express something of the quality or value of human experience or conduct.

Martha Pardede in her the book Literature: In Introductory Material (2016 :

30) say that the novel is a pure of art. It is self contained. It contains within itself everything that is necessary for its comprehension and enjoyment. It relates and reports human action.the novel is a free art. The novelist is at liberty to deal with any incident and episode, with any passion or experience with anything he pleases and to handle his story in any manner he likes.

The novel originally developed towards the middle of the eighteenth century as a realistic reflection of middle class life and experiences. Novelists frequently focus on the tensions between individuals and the society in which they live, presenting characters who are at odds with that society. So, in thinking about novel, try to see this informing structure: a society and characters who are in some ways

with this society. Some of novelists are moralists. They examine the relations between individuals and society and put forward their ideas about how people should behave but it would be too simple to say that the important thing about their novels is the message they preach, just as it is too simple to say that a writer such as Dickens is a novelist with a social purpose who writes to reform society.

2.3. Brief Descripton of Supernatural Power

Supernatural are all about phenomena or events that are not general or unusual that considered to exceed the limits of human ability in general and it is not accordance with natural law. According to Murray (1998:5) explains that supernatural means that some power which is not natural and that it is outside the order of natual on account of direct divine intervention. The God does not normally intervene in the workings of nature so that the supernatural is not a kind of explanation for things we do not understand. Miracle and heaven also called supernatural. People who have Supernatural power are a special gift that given by

God.

Smith (2000:17) says that supernatural can be said as one of fictions often associated with the paranormal. It includes ghosts, extraordinary human abilities or fantasy creatures. The people with a supernatural power are still exist until now.

According Alfian Rokmansyah in his book Studi dan Pengkajian Sastra,

Perkenalan Awal Terhadap Ilmu Sastra (2013 : 53) said that Supernaturalism in this world there are supernatural being, which are higher or more powerful than real world and can to control the nature, then it becomes the nature which is the human occupied at this time.

The concept of the supernatural includes everything that cannot be explained by scientific understanding of the laws of nature but many people are believe that is exist until now. Examples include likes angels, gods and spirits, and claimed human abilities like magic, telekinesis and extrasensory perception, telepathy and sixth sense.

There are four elements in literature. The first is Supernaturalism, Naturalism, idealism and materialism. Each of the genre has a different understanding with the problem in the world. One of the element is Supernaturalism. Supernatural come from the Latin word “Super” and “Natural” which mean that above which is not attached and in the condition of birth or the appearance of something. Supernatural being included like magic, invisible, hidden, mysterious and mystical.

Supernaturalism is opposite with Naturalism. There are many phenomenon that because of the supernatural. For example, many people believe with haunted building or they believe with shaman who can to find a mate and looking the future.

Supernatural is very difficult to accept by mind.

Smith in Pseudoscience and Extraordinary Claims of the Paranormal

(2010:245) proposed that there are six kinds of supernatural power, as follows:

1. Clairvoyance; is the acquisition of information directly from an

external object or physical event (viewing a concealed

photograph), not through the thoughts or perceptions of someone

else

2. Rectrognition: is a form of extra sensory perception in which the

target is a past event that could not have been learned or inferred

by normal means.

3. Telepathy: is the acquisition of information directly from an

external object or physical event.

4. Telekinesis or Psychokinesis: is the direct influence of thought on

physical objects or process.

5. Retropsychokinesis: Refers to using thoughts (in the present) to

6. Sixth Sense or Extrasensory perception: is the acquisition of

information about or response to an external object or influence not

using any known sensory channel. .

2.3.1. The Supernatural Powers in Both of Novels

There are many kinds of supernatural power in the world. Every supernatural power has a different function. The writer found there are three kinds of supernatural power in Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur and the supernatural power in both of novel is telekinesis or psychokinesis, telepathy and sixth sense or extrasensory perception.

Carrie‟s novel by Stephen king tells about a girl who has two supernatural powers namely Telekinesis or Psychokinesis, Telepathy. Then, Gerbang Dialog

Danur novel by Risa Saraswati tells about a girl with a supernatural power Sixth

Sense. Then, the writer analyzes discuss about three kinds of the supernatural in both novels.

2.3.1.1. Telekinesis or Psychokinesis

Jonathan C smith in his book Pseudoscience and Extraordinary Claims of the

Paranormal (2010: 246) say that Psychokinesis is the direct of thought on physical

objects or process ( moving things, bending spoons). Telekinesis or Psychokinesis is the ability to send many objects only using mind. Telekinesis or Psychokinesis ability can be obtained when the people was born or it can be learn with doing many exercise everyday with using the mind.

Telekinesis is the ability to influence objects with the power of the mind. The term Telekinesis appeared in 1890 which was coined by a Russian researcher named

Alexander N. Aksakof from the Greek language “Tele” and “Kinesis”. Tele means far away and kinesis means movement. The true meaning of telekinesis is a moving object or object made by spirits.

2.3.1.2. Telepathy

Jonathan C. Smith in his book Pseudoscience and Extraordinary Claims of the Paranormal (2010: 246) say that Telepathy is the paranormal acquisition of information concerning the thoughts, feeling, or activities of another conscious person. When the source of information is out of range of the sense (In another room, in another country). Telepathy is often called remote viewing.

Telepathy is the purported vicarious transmission of information from one person to another without using any known human sensory channels or physical interaction. The term was coined in 1882 by the classical scholar Frederic W. H.

Myers, a founder of the Society for Psychical Research, and has remained more popular than the earlier expression thought-transference.

2.3.1.3. Sixth Sense or Extrasensory perception (ESP)

Sixth sense is the ability of human that can to see another world that can be obtained with five senses. In technical term of Parapsychology, the sixth sense as

known as “Extrasensory perception (ESP)”. According to Jonathan C. Smith in his book Pseudoscience and Extraordinary Claims of the Paranormal ( 2010 : 245-246) say that it is the acquisition of information about, or response to an external object or influence not using any known sensory channel.

Extrasensory perception (ESP) divided into 3 forms:

A. Precognition (premonition, fortune-telling, prophency) is a form of

ESP in which the target is a future event that cannot be known from

present data.

B. Retrocognition is a form of ESP in which the target is a past event that

could not have been learned or inferred by normal means. It is seeing

into the past

C. Clairvoyance is the acquisition of information directly from an

external object or physical event, not through the perception of

someone else.

Human with sixth sense ability are still there until now. The ability make they can communicate with spirit and see another world that can‟t see with five senses.

Sixth sense is a special gift that given by God. Many people with Sixth sense uses the ability for a good thing.

2.4. Brief Description of Character

Character is an imagined person in a story whom we know from the words.

Character is person in a narrative work of arts (such as a novel, play, television series or film). In the book Understanding The Elements Of Literature by Richard Taylor

(1981) says that A character is a mere construction of words meant to express an idea

or view of experience and must be considered in relation to other feature of the composition, such as action and setting before its full significance can be appreciated. In the same way, elements of character must be selected and combined within a coherent mode or convention of presentation : tragic, comic, epic, satirical, romantic, realistic/naturalistic, dialectictic or absurdist. Since each mode or convention has a distinct view of human experience, characters are generally created according to the relevant needs of these aspects, view or outlooks. For example, tragedy involves an investigation of desire and motives and tragic characterization centres on the psychological study of destructive inner conflict and frustration

John Peck and Martin Coyle in the book Literary Terms and Criticism (1984 :

105) says that the people in a novel are referred to as characters. We assess them on the basis of what the author tells us about them and on the basis of what they do and say. Another point to remember is that the characters are part of a broader pattern : they are member of a society and the author‟s distinctive view of how people relate to society will be reflected in the presentation of every character.

Character is the mental, emotional and social qualities to distinguish one entity from another (people, animals, spirits, automatons, pieces of furniture and other animated objects). The important of a character to the story determines how fully the character is developed. Characters can be primary, secondary, minor or main.

In the book Literature : An Introductory Material by Martha Pardede (2016

:17) says that The presentation of characters creates a great effect on the significance of a work as the selection of the events and order of events (Plot).

According to Klarrel (1988;17-18) characters in a text can be rendered either as type or as individual. There are two kinds of Character :

 Flat Characters : is a typified characters in literature dominated by one

specific trait.

 Round Characters : Usually denotes a person with more complex and

differentiated features.

The author uses many devices to present and to develop his characters, include point of view, plot, setting and tone. Characterization is a very important element in novel (1988:17). The greatnes of a novel depends upon the nature of the characterization, upon the success the novelist has achieved in making his characters seem real men and women. In each character should have its own distinct personality, age, appearance, beliefs, socio economic background and language.

2.5. Brief Description of Comparative Literature

A comparative literature is a scientific area of literature that studies the interrelationship between literature and the comparison of literature with other fields.

According to Benedecto Crose (Giffod, 1995:1) in the book Metode Penelitian

Sastra (2003:128) say that comparative literature is the study in the form of exploration of vicissitude, alternation, development and differences between two or more literary works.

There are six aims to study Comparative literature. First is to looking for the influence of literary works on one to another or differences in other fields in the world of literature. Second to determine which one literary works are truly original and which are not included in the scope of literature. Third is to eliminate the

impression that certain national literature is superior to other national literary works.

Fourth is to seek cultural diversity reflected in one and another in literary works.

Also serves to see the mindset of human life from time to time. The reflection of thoughts in certain literary works will be compared so that the development or decline can be seen. Fifth is to strengthen the beautifulness concept in literature.

Sixth is to assess the quality of literary works from many countries and the beautifulness of literature. The people who created the term of comparative literature is Abel Francois Villemain and Ampere. Then, the first person who uses the term of comparative literature is Noel and Laplace (Wellek and Warren, 1976: 7). A comparative literature was developed in France, England, Germany and other

European countries. Then, spread to America and Asia.

In the book Introduction to Literature by Aang Fatihul Islam (2016 : 98) says that Weisstein (1973) states that comparative literature is a branch of literary history, it is study of relations of international spiritual, the study between the works and the inspirations of the lives of different writers whom were created different literary works. In addition, comparative literature draws based on investigating various literature in some works of the writers. He argued that comparative literature look primarily at studying the works of various literatures and their relationship.

In Classic book of Theory of Literature by Renne Wellek and Austin Warren that has been translated into many languages in the world, mentions various versions of comparative literature. Comparative literary terms involve comparative studies between two or more literatures, this definition is also interpreted as a study with other problems in literature.

Comparative literature is defined as the study of literature beyond division of one particular country and the study of the relationship between literature on the one hand and other areas of knowledge and belief on the others. In briefly, it was the study of one literature with another or the comparison of literature with other fields of human expressions.

Weisstein (1973) divides comparative literature into three areas :

1. Comparative Literary History : Comparative literary history is the

comparison between one literary history with another.

2. Comparative Literary Criticism : Comparative literary criticism is the

comparison between one literary criticism with another

3. Comparative literary theory : Comparative literary theory is the comparison

between one literary theory with another.

1. Agus Harianto (2015) Has observed Ideologi and Kebudayaan di balik film

Anime Jepang. The finding is value in the block as the concepts of God and

supernatural symbol are not in accordance with Islamic norms. While the

standpoint of culture most of the informants accept, because there is still

education, keeping culture, friendship, unity, respect for tradition, the

emergence of religious consciousness

2. Prasetyo Galih Budi (2006) has observed Elizabethan‟s Society Belief in the

Existence of Supernatural Powers as Revealed in Shakespeare‟s Macbeth.

The finding is about Supernatural power is a kind of magic. It reveals

mysterious things for people. It has always been driving everyone‟s belief.

People can have different interpretation about superstitions. It exists in the

daily life of our community. Countless work of literature bring the

supernatural theme up to surface as either the main or the supportive theme.

Macbeth was Shakespeare‟s last tragedy.

3. Kurniawati (2018) has observed Supernatural Aspect in James Wan‟s Movie

“The Conjuring II”. The finding discussed about Supernatural Aspect which

aimed to describe the supernatural aspect in the movie of the conjuring II by

James Wan. This research applied qualitative method in revealing the data.

This research based on Dunwich theory about Supernatural Aspect. The

researcher used note taking as instrument to get the valid data. The researcher

found that there were five kinds of supernatural aspects in James Wan‟s

movie “The Conjuring II”, those are True Tales of Ghost and Hunting,

Spiritualism, Possession, Obsession, Exorcism, Spells and Sorcery, and

Ghostly Supertitions. The researcher revealed that this showed five kinds of

supernatural in this movie.

4. Kristenses (2010) has observed The Literary Vampire-from Supernatural

Monster to The Actual Human. The purpose of this paper is to determine the

mythology of historical development of the figure of the vampire in literature

and focuses on mythical of the vampire is portrayed in literature, function of

vampire and Dracula is Vampire most supernatural. The research used

mythological analysis approach to find the kinds of mythological and The

author describe the Bram Stoker Dracula, via interview with vampire by

Anne Rice, to the contemporary vampire illustrated by the twilight series by

Stephanie Meyer and Charlene Harris. The writer used Jules Zanger‟s theory

who divides myths into four kinds.

CHAPTER III

METHOD OF RESEARCH

3.1. Research Design

In this thesis the write uses qualitative research to analyze the data. The data is getting from the both of novels and some of journals. The purpose use the descriptive qualitative method because, the writer takes text as a data from novels and get some information. The writer discuss about the supernatural power portrayed in both novels. Then, discuss what are the similarities and differences in both novels based on the element of novels. The writer uses the comparative theory to make it easy to find the real information.

The first step that the writer does is collecting data like library research and internet research. From both of methods the writer can to find some information to support the information about what is supernatural. For the first, the writer needs to read a novel Carrie which consists of 183 pages and the second novel Gerbang

Dialog Danur which consists of 223 pages. The purpose to read the novel so that the writer can understand about the story and get clear information. The second, the writer needs to collect some of journal, thesis or the other book to see the characteristic of Supernatural. The third the writer needs to compare the motif of supernatural in the first novel and in second novel. The last step, the writer needs to make the conclusion about all of the information related with supernatural that the writer had analyzed.

3.2. Data and Data Source

The data of this research were taken from both novels are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences and quotations. While the source of data for this research is two novels, Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur.

3.3. Data Collecting Procedure

In this process the writer needs to read all of the primary data and get the information related with the topic. The primary data is both novels. Carrie and

Gerbang Dialog Danur novels .

The second process is the writer needs to read all of the secondary data. The secondary data get from some books, journals and article that have a relation with

Supernatural power and comparative literature. The writer uses the comparative theory to see what is the similarities and differences based on elements of novel.

3.4. Data Analysis

The last is data analysis. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. It takes from some books, journals, thesis, USU library and internet research. There are some steps to get a good information.

In Descriptive qualitative method the first step the writer needs to read whole of novels Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur to get real data. The second step the writer needs to take some statements or quotations from the novels to make sure that in the novels there is a motif of supernatural. The writer discuss the similarities and the differences from plot, character and setting etc. But actually, both novels Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur have a same motif Supernatural power. The third step, the writer must analyzing data. The writer needs to analyze the motif of supernatural

Danur novels and see the way of supernatural. The last the writer needs to compare and conclude the information from both of novels about what are similarities and differences based on elements of novels.

The writer needs to collect all of the problems in both of novels. After collecting the problem the writer makes the conclusion about the Supernatural power. The writer uses the theory of supernatural to see the truth about the motif.

The supernatural power in Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur happened in different period and nation. Carrie novel happened in the past from America and Gerbang

Dialog Danur novel happened in nowadays from Indonesia.

ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS

In this chapter the writer would like to discuss about the motive about

Supernatural power through the main character in the two novels Carrie and

Gerbang Dialog Danur. The first novel Carrie by Stephen King which has supernatural power namely Telekinesis and Telepathy and in the second novel

Gerbang Dialog Danur by Risa Saraswati which has a supernatural power namely

Sixth Sense. In this chapter the writer will explain only about Telekinesis, Telepathy and Sixth sense that own by the main character in both novels Carrie and Gerbang

Dialog Danur.

4.1. The supernatural powers in Carrie novel

4.1.1. Telekinesis or Psychokinesis

In Carrie written by Stephen King tells about a girl with supernatural power named Carrie. In this novel Carrie is still in Senior high school grade one. She lived with a fanatic mother named Margaret. Margaret is very fanatic because she followed the religious teaching that is not based on the Bible, so she adhered to the wrong teachings of religion. Everyday, Carrie becomes the object of her abnormalities until she grew up to be a strange person who doesn‟t have friend at school.

Telekinesis or Psychokinesis is the ability to move many objects using mind.

Carrie got supernatural power telekinesis since she was born. Her mother always try to kill her while still in the womb because she know that the baby is a big sin for her.

But when Margaret looked into her eyes, she prays to God to be given the opportunity to caring the baby.

This also can influence the psychology of Carrie from her mother behavior.

In Carrie‟s novel the author tell many things about how she got a lot of pressure from her mother and all of her friends. It can be seen from her mother behavior who made her becomes an object of her abnormalities and when her friend made her to be a bullying object. The pressure made her realize that she has a supernatural power telekinesis and telepathy and learn to control it. In this novel, there are some quotations that show about Carrie‟s supernatural power. It can be seen from the quotation below :

This is the quotation :

“You‟re bleeding!” Sue yelled suddenly, furiously. You‟re bleeding, you big dumb pudding !” Carrie looked down at herself. She shrieked. The sound was very loud in the humid locker room.

They flew like snow and the chant became: “Plug it up, plug it up, plug it up, plug it-“

Sue was throwing them too, throwing and chanting with the rest, not really sure what she was doing a charm had occurred to her mind and it glowed there like neon: There‟s no harm in it really no harm in it really no harm- it was still flashing and glowing, reassuringly, when Carrie suddenly began to howl and back away, failing her arms and grunting and gobbling.

From the quotation above show all of her friend mocked her because she was bleeding. Carrie was very shock when she saw the blood in her body. It is the first time she got her period. Carrie doesn‟t know about menstruation because her mother never told about it. At the time Carrie was very afraid and asked for help. But, her friend just laughed at her and threw some tampons and sanitary napkins to her. In this novel shows one of the problem that she gets everyday is as a bullying object for

all of her friends. Carrie always acting weird and nobody wants to be friends with her. It‟s all because of her mother behavior which has made her to be a timid child.

Margaret was very angry with her when she now that she was bleeding. She believes that Carrie had sinned. Carrie always asked her mother the reason why she never told about menstruation. For every woman menstruation is a normal thing, but for

Margaret blood is a symbol of sin.

“It hurts, “Carrie groaned. “My stomach…”

“ That passes, “ Miss Desjardin said. Pity and self-shame met in her and mixed uneasily. “You have to… uh, Stop the flow of blood. you-“

There was a bright flash overhead, followed by a flashgun- like pop as a light bulb sizzled and went out. Miss Desjardin cried out with surprise and it occurred to her. (The whole damn place is falling in).

The quotation above shows Carrie use her supernatural power namely telekinesis. She felt very upset when she looked her friend laughed. Then Miss

Desjardin her gym teacher came to help her and told all the students to go out. When she looked at her friend, she felt very emotion and suddenly the light went out. At the time, Carrie doesn‟t know that she has a telekinesis ability to control many object around her. One of the supernatural power telekinesis in this novel can be proved from the quotation above. Carrie use telekinesis power when her friend mocked her by breaking the light bulb. But the ability just happened without her noticing it.

Every student felt surprised with the incident and assume that she made it broken.

So, her friend thinks that Carrie is a very strange person who doesn‟t have friends and have a unusual ability. Carrie will use telekinesis ability when she get angry and

emotion about something around her. Carrie can‟t control the power and it just happened.

Actually Carrie wants to be a normal teenager like her friends. She wants able to do many things without fear. All of the words and the regulation of her mother makes her can‟t be a normal teenager. Her mother always influences her with a wrong assumption. For example, her mother assumed blood as a symbol of sin and said there‟s no one kind man who loves her sincerely. Everyday Carrie got doctrine with statements that are very contrary with the reality. It makes Carrie becomes a strong teenager and have her own world.

She also show the Telekinesis ability when she was in the office. Miss

Desjardin brought Carrie to the office and tried to make her to calm down. Miss

Desjardin is a very kind teacher who always help her to solve her problem. But,

Carrie was very angry when the teacher Morton asked her to call her mother.

Directly she used the telekinesis power. It can been seen from the quotation below :

Morton gave the girl the yellow slip. “ You can go now, Cassie,” he said magnanimously.

“That‟s not my name!” she screamed suddenly.

Morton recoiled and Miss Desjardin jumped as if stuck from behind. The heavy ceramic ashtray on Morton‟s desk (it was Rodin‟s Thinker with his head turned into a receptacle for cigarette butts) suddenly toppled to the rug, as if to take cover from the force of her cream. Butts and flakes of Morton‟s pipe tobacco scattered on the pale green nylon rug.

Carrie left. For a moment there was silence; Morton and Desjardin watched her go. Then, with an awkward throat clearing sound, Mr. Morton hunkered down carefully and began to sweep together the debris from the fallen ashtray (Stephen King, 1974:11)

From the quotation above shows that Carrie make a trouble with her telekinesis ability. Suddenly, Carrie screamed and broken some object in the office.

It prove again that Carrie will use the power when she gets angry or emotional. Miss

Desjardin and Mr Morton tried to give a punishment to all of the students who mock her. But, Carrie just kept silence. It means that in the novel Carrie as a main character doesn‟t have courage to defend herself. So, Mr Morton asked her to call her mother and tell everything happened. Carrie felt very afraid because she knew that her mother will gets angry with her. It means that Carrie was very afraid with her mother and always tried to obey what her mother said.

In school she just looks at all of her friend play happily and laughed together.

Deep in her heart Carrie wants to play with them without feeling afraid of being scolded by her mother. Carrie doesn‟t want to fight her mother because she loves her mother so much although her mother always behaves strangely. Indirectly her mother behavior had made Carrie get mental illness.

In this novels show that Carrie also want falling in love like other people. It shows from Prom nights event. When Tommy the handsome boy in the school tried to asked Carrie to go together to the party, she looks very happy like a special girl.

She began to be brave to show that she was a normal teenager same as them. It was proven when Carrie tried to make a beautiful dress to look pretty in front of Tommy.

But, her friend always bully her and makes her angry. This proves she uses the telekinesis power.

From the quotation above shows clearly Carrie use telekinesis ability because she got bullied from her friend. All of her friend except Sue had plan something to make Carrie as a bullying object in Prom Night. The bully that they did in prom night was very outrageous. As a human we have a limit of patience and don‟t like if someone disturbs the happiness. From the Quotation above Miss Desjardin‟s tried to help her from her friend teasing, but Carrie uses the telekinesis power to make her flying and fall into the floor. It means that Carrie doesn‟t want to believe anymore to all of them. So, Carrie get her revenge with using Telekinesis power to kill all of them. It can be seen from the quotation below :

One of her friend named Jackie saw the great event that made by Carrie towards

Chamberline city. They can do everything as they want because Carrie never wanted to fight them, but the bullying was very unnatural. Bullying can make someone‟s

physicaly damage and hard to accept herself. Carrie assumed that all of people in the

Prom night already started to accept her presence because she was chosen as a queen.

Carrie just wanted to be like them and the same things like a teenager. But, her weakness makes them do what they want. The reason why she uses the telekinesis power is not because she is evil but her friends are always bullying her. It makes

Carrie can‟t control it again and have her revenge to all of them.

At the time Carrie knows who was spilled the pig blood on her head. After damaging all of the party, she saw Chris and Billy leave the party fast with a car.

Carrie uses the power to take them back and kill them in the car.

The end of the story shows Carrie uses telekinesis ability to kill her mother.

Actually Carrie loves her mother so much. She looks that her mother really loves her, but she considered herself insulting because she had made a big sin by having sex without married in the past. She thought that Carrie is a curse by God and someday she believed that she will do a big sin like her. Her past make her behave like a mad woman because of the sin that she has made. It means that Margaret doesn‟t want

Carrie to make a same mistake like her. But, the way she did it is wrong because her mother makes Carrie stressed and assumed that all of what her mother say is true although it is not true. Carrie began to know which one is good or bad because Miss

Desjardin helps her. It can been seen from the quotation when her mother tried to kill

From the quotation above tell that her mother tried to kill Carrie because she saw Carrie as a sin for her. She must kill Carrie so that Margaret doesn‟t have a sin anymore. It can happened to everybody when they do sin and can‟t to forgive herself.

At the time she saw Carrie as symbol of blood not as her child. Even her mother could hurt herself if Carrie didn‟t obey what she wants. It means that Margaret already possessed by an evil spirit because of the sin in the past. Live in sin can make anyone perceiving the good things are sin or they can be suicide. Human who had made a sin and decide to do suicide it means that they try to make a new sin. In this novel show that Margaret always tries to forget her sin. But, it was very hard for

Margaret and finally she lives in her sin forever.

Father prayer to drive the ghost out of her. But, Carrie used the telekinesis ability to stop her mother action. Carrie took all of the knives with her mind and pointed them to her mother until she died. After she killed her mother she regret it. It means that

Margaret as her mother who had been kept her until teenager. Margaret loves

Carrie so much. Margaret and Carrie only want to live happily. But Carrie had known that her mother always said something not true. For example like her mother always say that there is an evil in Carrie life because she has a telekinesis power and say blood as symbol of sin. Margaret makes Carrie‟s life become a girl who doesn‟t have courage to do something. In the end of the story Carrie uses her telekinesis power to make the problem in her school go away which are killing all of her friends and killing her mother. The power she use for something bad because she wants to get revenge to all of her friends who make her as a bullying object. So Carrie learns how to use and control the power.

4.1.2. Telepathy

In this novel shows the main character Carrie has two supernatural power.

The second power is „telepathy‟. She doesn‟t use the telepathy power to much.

Telepathy is the paranormal acquisition of information concerning the thoughts, feeling, or activities of another conscious person. Every human who have the power also can communicate from far distance. There is a statement that proof Carrie has telepathy ability when she can read Sue Snell‟s mind. It can been seen from the quotation below :

From the quotation above Carrie think that Sue Snell who made all this. After the big trouble happened in Chamberline, Maine Sue Snell came to her house to explain everything. But when Sue Snell came Carrie had killed her mother. At the time she was very angry to see Sue Snell in her house. Carrie looked deeper in her soul with telepathy ability to know what she plans for her. When Carrie read her mind she knows that she was not involved in this incident. Sue Snell is very kind person who wants to make Carrie happy by letting her boyfriend go with Carrie to make her happy. Sue did all this for her because she wants Carrie to forgive her when she try to mock her in the bedroom with all of her friends by throwing some napkins to her face.

Carrie knows everything what people think about her because she has a powerful ability called Telepathy. She knew the ability when she was growing up.

She felt very sad if all of her friend mock her because she behaves strangely. When she knew that she has telepathy and telekinesis ability she felt happy because she able to protect herself with this ability. But the ability can‟t make her have friends and to be a normal teenager. Instead she uses the ability to kill her friends to have revenge. She also killed her mother when her mother tried to kill her.

4.2. The Supernatural Power in Gerbang Dialog Danur's Novel

4.2.1. Sixth Sense

In Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novel written by Risa Saraswati tells about a child who has a supernatural power called sixth sense. Her name is Risa. She can see ghost and communicate with them since she was nine years old. At the time her parents entrusts her to grandmother‟s house because they are very busy. But, the house is full of ghosts from Holland. It is because Grandmother‟s house is Dutch heritage. Everyday she must play alone because her parent was very busy. She felt very lonely and it makes her able to see a child crying at the corner of the house and that is a ghost. At the time, she doesn‟t know that it is was a ghost. She thought that the boy is same as her a human. When she doesn‟t have friend to play, she can see there are many ghost at her house. They are kind ghosts who want to play and communicate with Risa. All of them felt happy when they know that Risa can see them.

Risa has five friends and they are ghosts who stay at her house. The names of the ghosts are Peter, William, Hans, Hendrick and Janshen. They have different characteristics. According to Risa, Peter is a short and very naughty teenager.

William was very good in playing violin. Hans was superior cake maker. Hendrick was the primadona and the last the little toothless and very whiny Janshen. The five of them are good ghosts who have become Risa‟s friend since childhood.

In this novel told that the main character Risa wants to be normal person who can not see ghost. The ability that she has can makes her able to communicate and plays with them until she forgets about her world. But the end of the story, she could

Risa tries to accept the ability because only special person can get this ability. First time, she feels very afraid to see the ghost but over time she was getting used to it.

From the quotation above explain that finally Risa feels happy with the ability that she get. When she doesn‟t have friend to communicate with, the ghost come and make her comfortable. Risa‟s father is very busy with his work until he doesn‟t have time to play with her. Risa find the happiness when she meets with the five ghosts and also they tell every moment that they pass until die. They are like a new family for Risa. Risa has a place to complain and tell everything. She felt better when they were present. This prove that she feel very lonely from the quotation.

Nouval as her entertainer when the ghosts didn‟t come to meet her. Nouval is a musical instrument that is a violin. Playing music makes her feel free and to express all of he r emotion, feeling and her love to her family. She gives the name of her violin Nouval because it was a gift from her grandfather called Nouval. Her father and her mother was very proud if I play Nouval, but they can‟t be by my side every time like Nouval. Playing music can‟t give a full happiness, because the fact is Risa needs someone real to communicate and give the opinion when she speaks.

Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novel tell a lot of stories when Risa meet with many ghost from many country. The story tells about the ability that Risa has namely sixth sense. Risa meet with the five ghosts one by one in different moment. Some of them come by itself and found by Risa. We can see supernatural power from this novel when she can see clearly the ghost. Unlike the other five friends, Janshen did not understand how afraid a normal human being would be to see his sudden appearance.

From the quotation above tell about her meeting with one of the ghosts namely Janshen. She met with Janshen when he cry at her bedroom. Risa doesn‟t feel afraid anymore to see Janshen because she knows that Janshen is same like another ghost that she found. Now, Janshen likes a little brother for Risa because he is whiny and always complains anything to her. He always cries in the corner of her bedroom and it makes Risa ask him and want to hear his problem. In the novel there is a quotation that tell about friendship between ghost and human.

According to Risa, she able to hear all of their problems when nobody can see them are the happiest thing in her life.

Risa must know that there are ghost who have different world with human, but Risa always depends on them and sometimes assume that they are a human like her. It is also because Risa doesn‟t have friend to play with. All of the students at her school also think that she is a strange person and arrogant, but actually it is because

Risa never feels comfortable with the attitude of human and she doesn‟t like to be in in crowded places. So, she decide to be friend with ghost than with human.

Her ability not only makes her able to see the ghosts but, she also able to communicate with them. The ghosts always there around her and looked what she did. There are some kind ghosts who always keep her but sometimes there is a bad ghost who likes to disturb her. The quotation below prove about supernatural power that Risa has.

Actually she knows that the ghosts always follow her but at the time Risa tried not to seeing them. She wants the ghost think that she couldn‟t see them again so that she can go through her life normally. But she can‟t do it because Danur

(ghost) smell is always disturbed her. Not only able to see and communicated with them, she also can to smell the smell of corpses in around her.

There are many kinds of ghost who comes to her. Some of them are kind ghost but some of them are wicked ghost. In this novel Risa is visited by many ghost and tell about their ghost‟s life. The quotation below will prove about Risa‟s ability to see and communicate with ghosts.

My ability to see ghosts is still same as before. However, now I meet more terrible spirits. There is a magnet that attracts them to always be around me, very close, even too often popping up. Often I am hysterical if they reveal themselves to conditions that are not worth seeing. Most of them just want to convey their complaints about their deaths, which makes them uneasy. Some of them ask for help, whatever the form.

Risa doesn‟t lose her ability because when there is a ghost she still can feel and see it. There are many kinds of ghost that she found after her friends are gone. Sometime Risa feels very afraid when she saw the face of the ghost because their face was very scary. They thought that the life they were passing through was not fair, so some of them had died tragically because of the human mistreatment. But Risa always tried to face it all and hear their problems.

Risa wanted to help all of the ghosts who came to her with giving some of solution so that they can deliver some of message to someone that have not yet conveyed.

Risa hopes after that they can live quietly and be in their world. Actually she felt very confused when she must answer all the ghost questions because she is still young. But she knew that the ability that she has must be used to help them because not everyone can see them like her. So, Risa decide to help as much as she can and become their friend forever. She wants to live like them to get a real happiness. Now

Risa realizes that life is not only mine.

From the analysis above, the writer finds differences from Carrie and

Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novels. Meanwhile, the writer doesn‟t find the similarities based on supernatural power in both novels. It can be seen from the following description.

Both novels there are many of similarities and differences about the elements of the novel in Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur.

Both novels tell all about the Supernatural power that own by the main character but the supernatural power in both novels Carrie and Gerbang Dialog

Danur are different. In Carrie‟s novel the supernatural that Carrie has is Telekinesis and Telepathy. But, in Gerbang Dialog Danur the main character Risa only has one

Supernatural power namely Sixth Sense.

In Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur novels also there are similarities and differences based on elements of the novels. There are many kinds of the elements in novel. The element that the writer analyzes as follows setting, plot, character, movement and generation, the owner of supernatural power, the inner conflict of doer, motif and genre.

1. Both novels have a different based on setting of place. Carrie‟s novel

happened in Chamberlain, Maine and Gerbang Dialog Danur happened in

Bandung. But both novels have a same place to use the supernatural power in

2. Both novels have a differences motif. In Carrie novel she uses the

supernatural power for a bad thing because the motif is revenge. Carrie wants

to kill all of her friends who always bully her. But, in Gerbang Dialog Danur

Risa uses it for a good thing because she wants to help them. So, in the

second novel the motif is to be a helper for the ghost.

3. There are the differences based on the inner conflict of doer. Carrie has no

friends because she has a fanatic mother that makes her to be a strange

person. The second novel tells about Risa who neglect by parents. Her

parents are very busy and left her with grandmother.

The Similarities Based on Element in Both Novels:

1. Both novels have a same plot which is linear. It is because the story

always sustainable and interrelated in every episode.

2. Based on a movement and generation both of novels have similarities. It

is because Carrie and Gerbang Dialog Danur tell in a modern area.

3. Both novels have similarity based on the owner of supernatural power.

The owner of supernatural power is same a girl as a main character. In

Carrie‟s novel the main character named Carrie and in Gerbang Dialog

Danur‟s novel the main character named Risa.

4. Both novels have a similarity based on the Genre of the story. Carrie and

Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novel is a Horror fiction story. But in Carrie‟s

novel it is not only Horror but also epistolary and tragedy.

5. There is similarity of character in both novels. In Carrie‟s novel there are

six supporting characters that influence the story and it same with

Gerbang Dialog Danur‟s novels.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

5.1. Conclusion

After doing the analysis, the writer draws the conclusion as follows:

1. There are two kinds of supernatural power in Carrie‟s novel namely

Telekinesis and Telepathy. While in Gerbang Dialog Danur there is one kind

of supernatural power namely sixth sense.

2. In both novels there are similarities and differences based on elements of

novel. The similarities can be seen through plot, movement and generation, the

owner of supernatural power, genre and character. The differences can be seen

through setting, motif and the inner conflict of doer.

5.2. Suggestion

The writer hopes that everyone who has the same idea with the writer can develop this thesis to get more understanding about Supernatural power. The writer also hopes to English Literature students may study more about this problem because this thesis also reflects with the phenomenon right now.

At the end of this thesis, the writer hopes the readers can understand about the story. Finally, the writer hopes it will make readers excited to read and discuss

Stephen Edwin King or known as Stephen King is a famous novelist author in

New York. He was born on September 21, 1947 in Portanld Maine. Everybody knows Stephen King as the best horror writer, supernatural, fantasy fiction and science fiction. His books have sold more than 350 million copies and had been adapted to movie. Some of his famous novels like “Carrie (1974), It (1986), The

Shinning (1977) and Pet Semmatry (1986)”. Carrie‟s novel was published in 1974 and adapted into movie in 2002. The producer of the novel named David Carson.

Carrie‟s novel is the first novel by Stephen King published in April 5, 1974.

The first print is around 30,000 copies. The novels tell about a teenager girl who lived with a fanatic mother. The girl in the novel named Carrie White and her mother named Margaret. The novel will tell how the mental of a teenager will influence by her mother‟s behavior. Carrie also has a supernatural power that she uses to revenge to all her friend who always bully her. Carrie‟s novel also tells all about the city of

Chamberline, Maine.

His parents had been separate since he was child. So he lived with his brother and his mother in Maine. After he graduated with a degree English in 1970 he tried to work as a teacher and establish himself to be a good writer. He also works in television, writing some of series for example like kingdom hospital and under the

Dome. After that he published a novel involving the part of the story assumption by

President John. F. Kennedy.

Stephen King married with a famous American author named Tabita Jane

King. Tabitha Jane King is his friend when studied in University of Maine. They have three children named Naomi Rachel, Joseph Hillstrom and Owen Philip. Some of his child also becomes a fiction writer like him. The achievement that he ever get is National Medal of Arts in 2015, World Fantasy Award for Live in 2004, Canadian

Booksellers Association Lifetime in 2007 and Mystery writers of America in 2007.

Beyond to be a writer, he also likes music.

When he published his first novel Carrie, many people like to read his novel.

Then, he wrote again a very scary novel namely IT. Based on his novel all of the people call him as a father of horror fiction because he can make the stories like real.

Risa Saraswati is a famous writer and also a singer from Indonesia. She was born on February, 24, 1985 in Bandung. He is a child of Iman Sumantri and Elly R

Sumantri. She is the oldest child from two brothers. She known as a girl with a supernatural power because she can to see ghost and communicated with them. She has been lived in Bandung when she was 5 years old.

She also known as a vocalist in Sarasvati‟s band and she work as civil servant in Karawang Bina Marga Department. Risa starts to be a writer from her diary. She always writes every activity with the ghosts and it makes she likes to be a writer. She began her carrier by writing some of stories on her personal blog. Then she want everybody know about the ghost. The first novel she wrote was Gerbang Diaog

Danur. Gerbang Dialog Danur tells about her self and the five ghosts. She write the real story from her daily life. In January 2015 which consists of 223 pages. All of her novel tell about mystical, supernatural, ghosts and sixth sense. Gelombang Dialog

Danur‟s novel was published by Bukune. After her novel become famous she write another novel with the title is Hendrick, Peter, Rasuk, Janshen, Maddah, Hans,

William. All of the novels tell about the ghosts that she calls friends. Risa saraswati success to make people believe with a supernatural power Sixth Sense. Her novel also had been adapted into film with the title is Danur. Many people feel very interesting with the film.

Risa graduated as a Civil Engineering from Parahyang Catholic University

(UNPAR) in Bandung. The supernatural power that she has made her wants to tell about ghost who always there around us. Now Risa become a famous writer with her frist novel Gerbang Dialog Danur

iii. Summary of Carrie

Carrieta White or Carrie is a 16 years old girl who lived with the fanatical fundamentalist Christian mother in Chamberlaine, Maine. Margaret behavior makes

Carrie grow up to be a strange person. Margaret always says to her that blood is a symbol of sin and many strange words again. Because of her mother Carrie doesn‟t have friend in the school and she becomes a bullying object for them. She feels very afraid to communicate with another people.

The problem comes when Carrie get her first period after education class. She feels very afraid when she saw blood in her body. She doesn‟t know that is menstruation because her mother never told something to her. Carrie tried to ask help to all of her friend, but they laughing at her and throw tampons and sanitary napkins to her face. Some of them take a video and share it. Then, her teacher Miss Desjardin came and asked all of the students to go out from the bedroom. She hug Carrie and try to make her calm down, but when Carrie looked all of them leave them some trouble comes. The light bulb goes out and they feel very afraid with her. She uses the supernatural power telekinesis to control or move many object around her. At the time she doesn‟t know that she has a supernatural power. She will use the telekinesis ability when she was angry. She also has a telepathy ability to read mind‟s people.

However, one of her friend Sue Snell feels regret because she had bullied her.

She wants Carrie to forgive her by telling her boyfriend Tommy Ross to be her partner in Prom Night. Sue Snell wants to make her happy like another people by letting her go with the man she likes without her knowledge. Carrie feels very happy and tried to sew the beautiful red velvet gown for the prom. But when her mother looked the color of her dress she told that she will make a new sin like she did in the

past. Her mother tried to persuade with to cancel her promise with the man.

But, Carrie tried to make her mother believe that Tommy is a kind man who will keep his promise. She uses the telekinesis ability to make her mother silence and locked her in the room so that Tommy doesn‟t hear the fighting between both of them.

In prom night Carrie felt very happy because she can do something like a normal people without fear. She can go with the man that she likes and enjoy the party. All of them praised the dress she was wearing because it looks very beautiful.

But one of her friend named Chris arranges the plan to make Carrie and Tommy as a queen and king in prom night. Then, she will make her embarrassed by spilling the pig blood from the stage. When Tommy and Carrie sit on the stage Chris directly pulls the cord and dumps the blood into Carrie‟s and Tommy‟s head. All of them are laughing at them and it makes Carrie angry. Carrie looked Tommy die because of the bucket that hits his head. Directly, Carrie uses her telekinesis ability with move many object to kill of them.

The telekinesis ability had been destroyed Chamberlain, Maine. After she kills all of them she back home to tell everything to her mother. Her mother hugs her and tries to kill her with kitchen knife. She tried to stop her mother with her telekinesis ability by mentally stopping her heart. She cries and regret everything.

When Sue Snell comes to her, Carrie uses her telepathy ability to know what really happened. Carrie know that Sue Snell do everything because she only want make her happy.

iv. Summary of Gerbang Dialog Danur

Risa Saraswati or Risa is a young girl who lived with her grandmother. Her parents are very busy with his work so they decide to send Risa to grandmother‟s house. When she lives in there, she can see there is a little boy sat on the corner and cry. She doesn‟t know that the boy is ghost. At the time Risa still in primary school and can‟t to understand about many things. She feels very lonely and doesn‟t have friend to play and communicate. She spent her time to play alone with her toy and her violin. But, the sixth sense ability makes her can see the ghost in the house. She lived in Bandung and the house is Dutch heritage‟s house. There are five ghosts still lived in the house. She feels very curious with the little boy on the corner. She come closer and asked him what happened with him. They communicate and then become a friend. After she meets with the little boy, another ghost also shows themselves.

They know that Risa can see them. They are Peter, Hans, Hendrick, William and

Janshen. Risa and the five ghosts now is a friend.

Everyday the ghost share the reason of why they can die. Risa always hear them and try to give some of conclusion. Actually Risa is a normal girl because she also has a friend at school but she doesn‟t like to communicate with them.

Sometimes Risa feels very afraid to see another ghost come to ask help for her. At the time she wants to life like a normal people who can‟t to see them. She feels confuse if there is a ghosts come and ask some solution of his problem. In her old she only wanted to play and spent much time with family. But, it is very different with her. The arrival of the ghosts made her very happy and doesn‟t feel lonely anymore.

The sixth sense that she has likes grace and curse for her. Risa uses the ability to help many ghosts to solve their problem before they died. Finally she wants to live

happily with the five ghost and realize that the power must be use to help another people. Risa realizes that live is not only about herself. She feels happy because she can see something that every body can‟t see.
