Despite opportunities to re-record the work in Vienna, Flagstad was insistent that this performance be released. Most of the missing sections were then recorded, and the resultant LP was the first (almost complete) commercial recording of the work on disc. Tale, esponenziale crescita del gettito di titoli verdiani è, però, logicamente dovuta anche all’offerta di nuovi supporti tecnologici che, a distanza di più di dieci anni dalle passate celebrazioni, si è di molto diversificata (vedi il Super Audio CD e, nell’ambito dell’audiovisivo, il Blu-ray Disc). Ma non è tutto oro quel- lo che luccica. Lo sforzo delle case discografiche, le ‘minorities’ come le ‘majors’, non è che il disperato tentativo di tenere testa a una crisi del mer- cato discografico dovuta alla libera circolazione e condivisione di mate- riali audiovisivi resa possibile da Internet; crisi da loro cercata di arginare smerciando le registrazioni dei propri cataloghi proprio attraverso questo canale, rendendole disponibili agli internauti melomani con un click. Al momento, l’irreversibilità di questa ‘crisi’ si palesa nella radicalizzazione di quanto già constatato negli anni scorsi dai precedenti titolari di questa rubrica: «l’estinzione della registrazione in studio»1. A complete Kirsten Flagstad discography, would take many years to carry throughl. If we include an unknown amount of pirate copies and till now unknown broadcast recording, we would come close to 1000 recordings of Kirsten Flagstad’s singing, made during a period of 46 years (1913-1959). Several Flagstad discographies have been written, but none of them can be regarded as complete. The most detailed of them all is undoubtedly Howard G. Sanner, edited 1980. Still, when we now have been allowed to write down this so far unknown Arne Dørumsgaard discography, it is our hope that you will get at least an idea of Kirsten Flagstad’s enormouus production. His own compositions, though, have been overlooked, unaccountably so on the evidence of these lovely Serenades. The Third is quite Brahmsian with a wonderfully bracing Hungarian finale. No. 4 is a highly expressive and richly scored work, whilst No. 5 casts its net yet wider – with anticipations of Mahler, and joyous references to the Vienna of the Strauss family. Serenades Nos. 1 and 2 are available on Naxos 8.572222. Currently Principal Conductor of the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra in South Korea, Christian Ludwig served as artistic director of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra from 2008 to 2011, conducting the orchestra at major venues in Paris, Munich, Rome and Cologne. Verdi's Aida: a Partial Survey of the Discography by Ralph Moore
Verdi’s Aida: A partial survey of the discography by Ralph Moore I emphasise the word “partial” here, as there are over 260 recordings of Aida in the catalogue; however, the bulk of these are live and as there are “only” just under thirty studio recordings to choose from, and I have concentrated on those. Although there are some superb live performances, the average collector will want one in good sound without distracting, extraneous noise. I have discounted two studio accounts from the very earliest days of acoustic recording as of specialist interest only, but included two from 1928 for reasons of their historical importance and vocal quality, and for purposes of comparison. A total of twenty-one recordings are considered below, of which two are radio broadcasts and the rest products of the recording studio. Given my own affection for Aida, its wide popularity and the frequency with which it is performed, I have been surprised upon occasionally encountering a real disdain for it among some operaphile friends. Perhaps it is a case of over-familiarity or “too many elephants” which leads them to regard it is as clichéd, but to me Aida represents another of those successful operas, like Don Carlo, where private passions are strikingly portrayed against a backdrop of epic events in superlative music. I certainly vividly recall the first time I heard the otherworldly incantations of the chorus to “Immenso Ftà” and the soaring, keening desolation of Aida’s lament; Verdi creates a special, exotic soundworld for this opera and skilfully exploits the clash of love and loyalty to generate maximum dramatic tension.
