Mr. Urbański made his debut with the Tokyo Symphony in November 2009. In the second concert with the TSO, a subscription concert in June 2011, Mr. Urbański conducted Lutoslawski’s Little Suite, Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No.2, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10 with overwhelming power. September 2013 marks the start of Krzysztof Urbański’s third season as Music Director of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He also continues as Chief Conductor of the Trondheim Symfoniorkester, who appointed him Artistic Leader in recognition of the major contribution he has made to the orchestra. Urbański’s performances this season include the world premiere of Pastorale e capriccio which both orchestras have co-commissioned from Wojciech Kilar. In 2013/14, he takes the Trondheim Symfoniorkester on tour to Vienna, Cologne, Warsaw and Kraków. He also holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor of Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. This season sees debuts with Berliner Philharmoniker and Chicago Symphony Orchestra (at the Ravinia Festival) and the following season with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich and Münchner Philharmoniker. He will also return to the Philharmonia Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de Espana, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. -

Verdi's Rigoletto
Verdi’s Rigoletto - A discographical conspectus by Ralph Moore It is hard if not impossible, to make a representative survey of recordings of Rigoletto, given that there are 200 in the catalogue; I can only compromise by compiling a somewhat arbitrary list comprising of a selection of the best-known and those which appeal to me. For a start, there are thirty or so studio recordings in Italian; I begin with one made in 1927 and 1930, as those made earlier than that are really only for the specialist. I then consider eighteen of the studio versions made since that one. I have not reviewed minor recordings or those which in my estimation do not reach the requisite standard; I freely admit that I cannot countenance those by Sinopoli in 1984, Chailly in 1988, Rahbari in 1991 or Rizzi in 1993 for a combination of reasons, including an aversion to certain singers – for example Gruberova’s shrill squeak of a soprano and what I hear as the bleat in Bruson’s baritone and the forced wobble in Nucci’s – and the existence of a better, earlier version by the same artists (as with the Rudel recording with Milnes, Kraus and Sills caught too late) or lacklustre singing in general from artists of insufficient calibre (Rahbari and Rizzi). Nor can I endorse Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s final recording; whether it was as a result of his sad, terminal illness or the vocal decline which had already set in I cannot say, but it does the memory of him in his prime no favours and he is in any case indifferently partnered. -

572031 bk Penderecki 4/2/09 16:15 Page 8 Stanisław Skrowaczewski, and in 1958 Witold Rowicki was again appointed artistic director and principal conductor, a post he held until 1977, when he was succeeded by Kazimierz Kord, serving until the end of the centenary celebrations in 2001. In 2002 Antoni Wit became general and artistic director of the Warsaw PENDERECKI Philharmonic – The National Orchestra and Choir of Poland. The orchestra has toured widely abroad, in addition to its busy schedule at home in symphony concerts, chamber concerts, educational work and other activities. It now has a complement of 110 players. Utrenja Antoni Wit Hossa • Rehlis • Kusiewicz • Nowacki • Bezzubenkov Antoni Wit, one of the most highly regarded Polish conductors, studied conducting with Henryk Czyz and composition with Krzysztof Penderecki Warsaw Boys’ Choir at the Academy of Music in Kraków, subsequently continuing his studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He also graduated in law at the Jagellonian University in Kraków. Immediately after completing his studies he was Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra engaged as an assistant at the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra by Witold Rowicki and was later appointed conductor of the Poznan Philharmonic, Antoni Wit collaborated with the Warsaw Grand Theatre, and from 1974 to 1977 was artistic director of the Pomeranian Philharmonic, before his appointment as director of the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra and Chorus in Kraków, from 1977 to 1983. From 1983 to 2000 he was the director of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, and from 1987 to 1992 he was the chief conductor and then first guest conductor of Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria. -

Para dar vida a los protagonistas de esta ópera considerada como uno de los títulos belcantistas por antonomasia, donde tanto el texto como la música quedan subordinados a la voz, ABAO-OLBE ha reunido a un elenco encabezado por dos grandes figuras de la lírica: Elena Mosuc como ‘Donna Lucrezia Borgia’ y Celso Albelo como ‘Gennaro’. La soprano rumana, una de las mejores sopranos belcantistas, y el tenor tinerfeño, reciente triunfador en Viena y el Metropolitan Opera House, han sido artífices de momentos inolvidables en las temporadas de ABAO, como su memorable actuación conjunta en I Puritani, el primer bis en el Euskalduna protagonizado por el canario en L’elisir d’amore y los bises de Mosuc junto a Leo Nucci en todas las funciones de Rigoletto. -
