Dr. Thandeka Thandeka is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister and theologian. She is the founder of Affect Theology, which investigates the links between religion and emotions using insights from affective neuroscience. She is the author of The Embodied Self: Friedrich Schleiermacher's Solution to Kant's Problem of the Empirical Self, and Learning to be White: Money, Race and God in America, and a contributor to books including The Cambridge Companion to Schleiermacher and The Oxford Handbook on Feminist Theology and Globalization. Thandeka's numerous publications in journals include essays in American Journal of Theology and Philosophy, The International Journal of Practical Theology, Harvard Theological Review, Process Studies, and Tikkun. Thandeka has taught at San Francisco State University, Meadville Lombard Theological School, Williams College, Harvard Divinity School, and Brandeis University, and has been a Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center at Stanford University and a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Process Studies at Claremont School of Theology in Claremont California and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Before receiving her doctorate in philosophy of religion and theology from the Claremont Graduate University, Thandeka was a television producer for 16 years and is an Emmy award winner. She was given the !Xhosa name Thandeka, which means "beloved," by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1984. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express deepest appreciation to Judith A. Naomi King, whose steadfast belief in my work enabled me to begin and stay the course of this intense two-year theology project. — Reverend Dr. Thandeka PREFACE As a longtime religious educator and a parent of three young adult Unitarian Universalists, I have long been aware of the need for faith development materials that provide a framework for deep and longtime Unitarian Universalists to engage in theological reflection, not as an intellectual exercise, but as a process of meaning-making that equips one for living in the world as a Unitarian Universalist person of faith. And here it is: a program that explores the life experiences of both historic and contemporary Unitarian Universalist theologians, highlighting that which caused in them a change of heart, a new direction, new hope, and a deeper understanding of their own liberal faith. These workshops offer participants a chance to engage with and bring their personal experiences to bear on the very questions explored by each theologian in turn. The program offers a pathway for developing not only one's own personal theology but also one's deep understanding of the threads of our Unitarian, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist theological heritage. As a Tapestry of Faith curriculum for adults, What Moves Us weaves Unitarian Universalist values, Principles and Sources with four strands: spiritual development, ethical development, Unitarian Universalist identity development, and faith development: Spiritual Development. In Everyday Spiritual Practice, Scott Alexander defines spirituality as our relationship with the Spirit of Life, however we understand it. Our spirituality is our deep, reflective and expressed response to the awe, wonder, joy, pain and grief of being alive. Tapestry of Faith programs seek to form children, youth, and adults who: • Know they are lovable beings of infinite worth, imbued with powers of the soul and obligated to use their gifts, talents and potentials in the service of life • Appreciate the value of spiritual practice as a means of deepening faith and integrating beliefs and values with everyday life. 2 Ethical Development. When we develop our ethics, we develop our moral values—our sense of what is right and wrong. We also enhance our ability to act on those values, overcoming oppressions and despair. Tapestry of Faith programs seek to form children, youth, and adults who: • Realize they are moral agents, capable of making a difference in the lives of other people, challenging structures of social and political oppression and promoting the health and well-being of the planet • Accept that they are responsible for the stewardship and creative transformation of their religious heritage and community of faith in the service of diversity, justice and compassion. Unitarian Universalist Identity Development. Participation in a Unitarian Universalist congregation does not automatically create a Unitarian Universalist identity. Personal identification with Unitarian Universalism begins when individuals start to call themselves Unitarian Universalist and truly feel a part of a Unitarian Universalist congregation or community. Identity is strengthened as individuals discover and resonate with the stories, symbols and practices of Unitarian Universalism. Tapestry of Faith programs develop children, youth, and adults who: • Affirm they are part of a Unitarian Universalist religious heritage and community of faith that has value and provides resources for living • Recognize the need for community, affirming the importance of families, relationships and connections between and among generations • Accept that they are responsible for the stewardship and creative transformation of their religious heritage and community of faith in the service of diversity, justice and compassion. Faith Development. When we develop in faith, we develop our heads and our hearts as a transformative way of life. We become meaning-makers who stand on the side of love. Faith is about embracing the heart of life's transforming possibilities and growing in our sense of being at home in the universe as part of the interdependent web of life. Faith is practice of right relationship with others that inspires trust and care. While faith has aspects that are internal and personal, it is best supported and sustained in a community with shared symbols, stories, traditions and values. Unitarian Universalist faith development emphasizes each person's religious journey, each person's lifelong process of bringing head, heart and hands to seeking and knowing ultimate meaning as part of beloved religious community. Each What Moves Us workshop weaves these strands together, to help participants grow in their identity and faith as Unitarian Universalists as they find the grounding to live out their values in the world. (Prayer of Rabindranath Tagore, from Gitanjali, chapter 35) Readings About the middle of this past week as the social protests in our country and around the world rolled on and even gained momentum, I felt I needed to abandon the sermon theme I had prepared in order to engage the energy of this time. And what I see and feel happening, in broad outline, is an affirmation or re-affirmation of the “American dream,” the “American experiment,” or what Unitarian-Universalist theologian, the Rev. Forrest Church, calls “The American Creed,” which I will talk about in my sermon. This affirmation/re-affirmation is being led by some of those who have been the most shut out from the American dream through ongoing racial prejudice, America’s original sin, but who, nonetheless, still have seen the dream and are pointing the way to it – through anguished, angry, and yet, to me, ultimately, hopeful protests.

    Research Note James Luther Adams Bibliographies JARED A. FARLEY James Luther Adams (1901-1994) is widely considered the twentieth century’s leading Unitarian theologian. Serving as professor of theology and ethics at Meadville Lombard Theological School and the Federated Theological Faculty in Chicago, IL (1936-1957), and at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, MA (1957-1968), Adams authored innumerable sermons, essays and book chapters. Among scholars, he is known for having translated the works of Paul Tillich and Ernst Troeltsch into English. Among students of ministry, he is recognized for his arguments concerning the religious efficacy of voluntary associations, derived from his experiences confronting Nazism in pre-World War II Germany. An intellectual with an uncanny ability to recall information and see connections across diverse subjects, Adams drew deeply from the well of theological, historical, and social concern that was his life. His writings preserve much of what he came to believe. The following two bibliographies came about as a helpful by- product of my research on James Luther Adams. These titles list and cross-reference the sermons, essays and addresses of JLA that have been reprinted in the various edited volumes of his writings, including the recently published Prophet to the Powerful (2008). Governance describes the way countries and societies manage their affairs politically and the way power and authority are exercised. For the poorest and most vulnerable, the difference that good, or particularly bad, governance, makes to their lives is profound: the inability of government institutions to prevent conflict, provide basic security, or basic services can have life-or-death consequences; lack of opportunity can prevent generations of poor families from lifting themselves out of poverty; and the inability to grow economically and collect taxes can keep countries trapped in a cycle of aid-dependency. Understanding governance, therefore, is central to achieving development and ending conflict. During the 1990s donors came to realise that development required better ‘governance’, and DFID recognised early on the need to work with the research community to identify ways of improving governance for better development outcomes.

A brief comparison study of the two giants of mainstream sci-fi, Star Wars and Star Trek reveals the differing attitudes toward religion expressed in the genre. Star Trek presents an evolving perspective, from critical secular humanism to begrudging personalized faith, while Star Wars presents an ambiguous mythological foundation for mystical experience that is in more ways universal.     Our History Tracing our Congregation from 1729 to Today ARLINGTON STREET CHURCH Unitarian Universalist Beginnings • Our community began as a group of Scots-Irish Calvinists gathered in a converted barn on Long Lane in Boston on November 15th, 1729. The inhospitable residents of Boston dubbed them derogatorily as “The Church of the Presbyterian Strangers,” and the name stuck. The building be- came known as the Long Lane Meeting House. • A real church was built on the site in 1744; in it, the Massachusetts State Convention met and ratified the Constitution of the United States on February 7th, 1788. When the street name was changed from Long Lane to Federal Street in honor of the event, the building became known as The Federal Street Church • In 1787, the congregation, wanting to be self- governing, voted to call Jeremy Belknap, a liberal Congregationalist, to lead them in adopting the congregational form of governance. Thus they left the required creed and rule of the Presbytery. • William Ellery Channing, often known as the Fa- ther of GatheredAmerican Unitarianism, served as Senior Minister at the Federal Street Church from 1803 to 1842. Under his leadership the congregation prospered. To accommodate the crowds that Channing drew, the thirdin meeting house, Lovede- and Service signed by the noted Charles Bulfinch, was built in 1809 on the Federal Street site. • In 1819 Channing delivered “The Baltimore Sermon,” which defined the new Unitarianfor the- Justice and Peace ology for the burgeoning Unitarian movement. Although Channing originally resisted formation of a new denomination, under the direction of his associate and later successor, Ezra Stiles Gan- nett, the move toward separation from the Con- gregationalists began.

This was the Oriental view of the phenomenal world as Maya or Illusion concealing the unity of Brahman under a variety of names and forms. This thesis describes Emerson's introduction to Hindu thought and literature during his college days, reviews the_concept of Maya found in Hindu scriptures, and details Emerson's deepened interest and wide reading in Hindu philosophy in later life.

    Fear in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a Pathway to Reconciliation Meandering Philosophy and Musings Mingled with Scripture Revision B By Tom Irvine Email: [email protected] July 4, 2020 To fear God is to have absolute reverence and awe for an Almighty God, the Creator of all things. But the fear discussed in this paper is worry and dread over potential loss or calamity. This fear can include angst regarding a pending change, even though that change may be a needed growth opportunity, or otherwise bring blessings. The fear may be deeply rooted in a person’s subconscious due to genetic predispositions or past traumatic experiences. Furthermore, fear can exist on an individual or an institutional basis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has accomplished an immeasurable amount of good for innumerable souls by providing a faith community for like-minded people, offering disaster relief to those in distress and in so many other ways. In addition, the LDS Church provides excellent education opportunities through its BYU campuses and the BYU Pathway program. 1 But the Church has traumatized others via certain fear-based policies and unrighteous dominion. Some trauma victims leave the Church and may never return. Others are the “walking wounded” who still participate in Church for social or altruistic reasons even though their bubbles have burst, or their “shelves” have broken. This paper is neither a vindication of the Church nor an expose. Rather it is a paper that wrestles with some real and messy issues with the hopes that some mutual understanding and peaceful reconciliation can be achieved.
