The title Bleak in itself is a reference to Opeth’s track on their 2001 album, Blackwater Park. I listened to the track during a very difficult time in my young adult life, and it was in the track’s final chorus that the ending of this work finally came to me. Opeth’s Bleak, Portishead’s Cowboys, Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower, and Porcupine Tree’s Way out of Here helped me survive during some of the toughest parts of my life, and those tracks, as well as those referenced in my chapter titles, were instrumental to this novel finally getting published.
