Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Wickenden Wonderland, Dec 21, Rings In Holiday Spirit Caroling is part of the Christmas tradition. Ordinary folks gracing their neighborhood with their own style of holiday cheer is commonplace in many cities. Fox Point on the PVD East Side, one of the city’s neighborhoods with an artistic temperament, is putting their own spin on it. Wickenden Wonderland – Thursday, Dec 21, 6-8pm – is a celebration put together by the Fox Point Neighborhood Association, and it is for a great cause. Raising money for the homeless with Amos House, this wonderland provides a glimpse of beauty in the human spirit. It also looks like a damned good time. The start is the Point Tavern 6-7pm with drinks and plans for merrymaking. The kitchen will be occupied by Great Northern Barbeque, so it’s an opportunity to enjoy delicious food among friends. There will be drink specials at the Point, and their beverages are a great way to lubricate your singing voice – and no one should be caroling on an empty stomach. Revenue from food and drink sales will go toward Amos House. This all makes for a stellar reason to join in on the fun. At 7pm, the party moves to George M. Cohan Plaza (the intersection of Wickenden and Governor Streets) for what the event Facebook page describes as “great musical accompaniment of the Mighty Good Boys. There will be hot chocolate and cookies for everyone!” If you find yourself on PVD’s East Side or you’re in the city looking for something to do on a Thursday night, then celebrate the holiday season with a caroling crowd. -

Plaintiff Must Prove Service on Motion to Vacate Default Judgment By Erin Louise Palmer , Litigation News Contributing Editor – May 12, 2015 Service by certified mail is insufficient to satisfy the plaintiff’s burden in a motion to vacate a default judgment, according to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania . In Myers v. Moore , the district court granted the defendants’ motion to vacate a default judgment of more than $1 million where the plaintiff failed to demonstrate that the defendants had actual knowledge of the lawsuit and where the plaintiff failed to establish that she properly served the complaint on defendants or their authorized agents. Observers question how a plaintiff would satisfy these evidentiary hurdles. Plaintiff Awarded $1 Million Default Judgment The lawsuit arises out of a stage-diving incident at a music venue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During a performance, the lead singer of the band Fishbone, Angelo C. Moore, dove into the crowd and knocked over the plaintiff, causing her serious injuries. The plaintiff sued Moore, John Noorwood Fisher (Fishbone’s bass player), Fishbone, Fishbone’s manager, and other parties associated with the venue for negligence and civil conspiracy in producing the concert and failing to warn the audience that the concert would feature stage diving. The plaintiff also sued Moore, Fisher, and Fishbone for assault and battery. After the plaintiff reached settlements with some of the defendants, the court dismissed the plaintiff’s claims against the non-settling defendants, including Moore and Fisher. The plaintiff brought another action on February 3, 2012, against the non-settling defendants for negligence, civil conspiracy, and assault and battery. -

A Song by Song Tour of "Long Drive": 1-Blue Ridge Baby--(written by Brian Cameron) My Take; "Blue Ridge Baby" comes right out of the gate with a lead guitar solo that blends right into the funk/country/rock/pop groove of the song. Then comes Brian Cameron laying down funky-soulful vocals about a girl that "is everything to him." The song is about getting back to your girl--your perfect girl, and nothing will stop you from getting back to her. The song then breaks into a short and sweet guitar solo that blends right back into the song's groove. Rock solid drums, sweetly layed down keys and a bass line that never stops groovin. This song is one of those songs that can make it on many a different chart--so much so, it makes you want this "Blue Ridge Baby" that the song is about. This will end up one of the most popular songs off of this album. It just has that "it." 2-Shine On Me--(written by Brian Cameron) My Take: This song comes right out of the gate with some sweet slide guitar that brings in the pop/county groove. -

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.
