In 1921, in the preface to Edouard Driault‘s second edition of La Question d’Orient depuis ses origines jusqu’à la paix de Sèvres, a work originally published in 1898, French historian Gabriel Monod postulated that ―the Eastern Question was the key issue in European politics‖ (v). In his 1996 concise introductory The Eastern Question, 1774-1923, Alexander L. Macfie similarly stated that ―for more than a century and a half, from the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-74 to the Treaty of Lausanne of 24 July 1923, the Eastern Question, the Question of what should become of the Ottoman Empire, then in decline, played a significant, and even at times a dominant, part in shaping the relations of the Great Powers‖ (1). Undoubtedly, the Eastern Question has always been deeply rooted in the intricacies of European diplomacy, more obviously so from the Crimean War onwards. After an almost three-year conflict (1853-6) first opposing Russia to the Ottoman Empire, then supported by France, Britain, Sardinia, Austria and Hungary, belligerents drafted peace conditions. The preamble to the 30 March, 1856 Treaty of Paris made the preservation of Ottoman territorial integrity and independence a sine qua non condition to any settlement – which was taken up in Article VII of the treaty as a collective guarantee. -

Rodkey Guide to the Index Tis index covers the frst ten volumes of Wesley and Methodist Studies, beginning with the frst volume (2009) and ending with volume 10/2 (2018). Te editorial team is grateful to the Revd Dr Christopher D. Rodkey for design- ing and drafing the index, and to Fernando Carvalho for his editorial work. Te creation and production of such an index is highly complex. While names, places, and events are relatively straightforward to reference, Wesley and Methodist Studies covers theological and related topics that can be concep- tually challenging to organize. And the indexer is called upon also to make a wide range of contestable judgements, for example, in defning key terms such as ‘Methodist’. Users should therefore see the index as a guide rather than a detailed route map. Given the range and scope of the journal, the index focuses on substantive references to topics in the main body of the text; in general, incidental men- tions, and topics that appear only in footnotes, are not referenced. Although MacColl is nowadays remembered mainly for his contributions to the science of logic, his work covers many other domains and witnesses the richness and variety of his intellectual interests. MacColl’s early writings (from 1861 onwards) were devoted to mathematics, notably geometry, algebra and the theory of probabilities. In the late 1870s and early 1880s, he published several papers on logic that brought him to the attention of his contemporaries. In these writings, he expressed his preference for propositional calculus instead of the term/class approach, widespread in his day. -

McCONNELL ESTABLISHMENT AND TOLERATION IN EDMUND BURKE'S "CONSTITUTION OF FREEDOM" The most memorable voices in American Founding-era debates over relations between church and state were raised in support of disestablishment and full and equal freedom of conscience. States- men such as James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, as well as evan- gelical leaders such as John Leland and Isaac Backus, made argu- ments against establishment and in favor of full and equal rights of religious conscience in terms of enduring principles of civil and religious liberty. Their words continue to inspire and guide our consideration of these weighty and contentious questions. There were, of course, other voices. Some patriotic and revered leaders, such as George Washington and Patrick Henry, thought full dis- establishment a dangerous course for a republic in need of every support for public virtue. But their arguments have had little effect on the course of church-state affairs in the United States. -

Governance and the Religion Question: Voluntaryism, Disestablishment, and America's Church-State Proposition CARL H. ESBECK The quandary over how to structure the relationship between religion and the civil state is an ancient one. From the perspective of political philosophy this is the religion question, and events over many centuries have proven that the answer is easy to get wrong. Religion, by its very definition, is the fixed point from which all else is surveyed. It is about ultimate matters, both micro and macro. Hence, religion addresses the irreducible core of personhood and its meaning, while at the same time religion embraces a worldview that transcends and encompasses everything else. Religion generates intense emotions that when acted upon can breach the peace, and religion forms deep loyalties that can rival the patriotic ties that bind citizens to their nation-state. -

SPIRITUAL LANDSCAPE OF ANGLESEY By Patrick Sheridan Dr. Reiter Early English Landscapes 2 June 2016 Sheridan 1 The isle of Anglesey, or Ynys Môn, is located in the northwestern corner of Wales. Throughout its history, the spiritual realm has made a major impact on its landscape. The earliest inhabitants of the island valued spirituality as central to their lives, as shown by the great monuments they built to their ancestors. Later generations honored nature but left little traces on the landscape that remain today. In time, a new religion, Christianity, arrived and brought with it new ways of worship requiring new places to do so in. Christianity would survive through Viking raids, English invasion, English Reformation, and social unrest, all of which would impact the landscape. The contemporary landscape of Anglesey is a result of all of these factors which have shaped the island’s history, and the spiritual element is still an essential part of it. The first people to inhabit Anglesey came to the island circa 7000 BCE. Before that time, during the Paleolithic era, Anglesey had been covered by a large ice sheet, creating Pre- Cambrian rock outcroppings among the oldest in Britain. Until the 4th millennium BCE, Anglesey was connected to mainland Wales by a land bridge until rising sea levels filled in, creating the modern-day Menai Straits.1 It was also around this time, during the Neolithic era, that a major change in social organization occurred. Agriculture was established, including the domestication of animals. Accompanying this so-called “Revolution”—and more pertinent to the topic of this paper—was the development of religious beliefs. -
