Texas: The Lone Star State By Cynthia A. Malecki "Texas, Our Texas! All hail the mighty State! Texas, Our Texas! So wonderful, so great! Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test, Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest." 1st stanza of the Texas state song They say that everything is big in Texas–big farms, big ranches, big cities, big money, and even big hair. Texas is the biggest of the 48 contiguous U.S. states, with 267,277 square miles (692,244 square km), which is bigger than the 14 smallest states combined.(1) It is approximately 850 miles (1,370 km) from north to south and from west to east. The biggest ranch in Texas is The King Ranch in Kingsville, which is larger than the state of Rhode Island. The cities of Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio are among the nation's ten largest. The Port of Houston handles more foreign cargo than any other U.S. port. Texas is the second largest producer of electronic components in the U.S. and the nation's second leading exporter. Worldwide television viewers might remember the TV show "Dallas" featuring the Ewing family who lived on the South Fork Ranch in Dallas, Texas. Weekly shows featured the extravagant lifestyle of oil barons and their wives with big hair. (Usually found in the southern United States, big hair is the result of combing the hair and spraying it to produce a hairstyle puffed up two or three times its normal volume and capable of withstanding even the strongest winds.) Former Texas governor Ann Richards even declared an official Texas Big Hair Day in 1993. -

Texans One and All The French Texans Although a French flag of some sort is represented in “six flags over Tex- as” displays, France never—in any sense of political control or official claims—flew a flag over Texas and never gave her own citizens strong reasons for emigration. However, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, did make one foray west of the drainage of the Mississippi, and General Charles Lallemand did lead a short-lived military colony into East Texas. France, in the New World, was more interested in trade than settlement and was often distracted by continental European problems. The nation was neither equipped for colonial ventures nor had that much interest Revised 2013 in the western Gulf of Mexico. Nevertheless, in 1685 the young Sieur de La Salle landed at Matagorda Bay, Texas, some 600 miles west of his target: the Mississippi River. The few colonists he brought were to found a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi, to which France did have a claim, and thus tie down France's claims that, for a time, stretched from Canada to the Gulf—in theory. Encountering storms and perhaps suffering from bad navigation, the ships found the Spanish coast. Navigation in those days could determine, with an exactness of perhaps 30 miles on a good day, Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle position north and south. But the day was not good, and the northern shore of the Gulf of Mexico stretches more east and west. In those days, east and west positions on a rotating globe were hard to determine. -

Richard Page, Lara Schwarz, & Nora Hellmold Vosburg) due for publication in 2016. https://scholarworks.iupui.edu Texas Alsatian, Medina County, Texas 1 Introduction: Historical background The Alsatian dialect was transported to Texas in the early 1800s, when entrepreneur Henri Castro recruited colonists from the French Alsace to comply with the Republic of Texas’ stipulations for populating one of his land grants located just west of San Antonio. Castro’s colonization efforts succeeded in bringing 2,134 German-speaking colonists from 1843 – 1847 (Jordan 2004: 45-7; Weaver 1985:109) to his land grants in Texas, which resulted in the establishment of four colonies: Castroville (1844); Quihi (1845); Vandenburg (1846); D’Hanis (1847). Castroville was the first and most successful settlement and serves as the focus of this chapter, as it constitutes the largest concentration of Alsatian speakers. This chapter provides both a descriptive account of the ancestral language, Alsatian, and more specifically as spoken today, as well as a discussion of sociolinguistic and linguistic processes (e.g., use, shift, variation, regularization, etc.) observed and documented since 2007. The casual observer might conclude that the colonists Castro brought to Texas were not German-speaking at all, but French. -

Before then, the most accepted coin was the Spanish peso. Americans called it the Spanish dollar. The value of a Spanish peso was eight reales (pronounced ray-AHL-ays). To make change for an eight-reales coin, merchants would cut the coin into smaller pieces. Americans were used to seeing prices stated in Spanish dollars. The United States thus selected the dollar as its basic unit. Thomas Jefferson thought that dividing money by eight was impractical. Although many early Texans were of this variety, some were of a more gentle, conservative nature. Anson Jones, a man in the latter category, was not the type one usually pictures as a pioneer. He was a New Englander with a Puritan streak in his blood which almost seemed out of place in early Texas. 1 His yearning for power and prestige, coupled with a deep bitterness inherited from childhood, combined to give Jones an attitude that destined him for an unhappy existence and helps explain many of his caustic remarks concerning his associates. In all of his writings he has a definite tendency to blame others for fail- ures and give himself credit for the accomplishments. When Anson Jones referred to his early life, these references were usually filled with bitterness and remorsefulness. This dissertation uses archival and interpretive methods to examine the life and contributions of Mary Smith McCrory Jones in Texas. Specifically, this project investigates the ways in which Mary Jones emerged into the public sphere, utilized myth and memory, and managed her life as a widow. Each of these larger areas is examined in relation to historiographicaly accepted patterns and in the larger context of women in Texas, the South, and the nation during this period. Mary Jones, 1819-1907, experienced many of the key early periods in Anglo Texas history. The research traces her family’s immigration to Austin’s Colony and their early years under Mexican sovereignty. The Texas Revolution resulted in her move to Houston and her first brief marriage. Following the death of her husband she met and married Anson Jones, a physician who served in public posts throughout the period of the Texas Republic. Over time Anson was politically and personally rejected to the point that he committed suicide. -

After the creation of the United States from the original 13 colonies, other territories were granted statehood. Only Texas entered the union as a separate and independent nation. The distinctive nature of Texas owes much to its having been a republic before it was a state and to the influence of its settlers. The newly arriving immigrant groups tended to set- tle in one particular area, since it was easier to work with and live around people who spoke the same language and practiced the same customs. Many Mexicans came north while Texas was still a Spanish territory to set up farms on the fertile Coastal Plains. As A traditional band plays lively German the United States grew, more Native Americans, who had music at the Texas Folklife Festival.
