First, I want to thank my first teacher and fiercest advocate, my mother. One of her greatest lessons to me was the importance of education. In this lesson she didn’t just talk the talk; she walked great distances in securing education opportunities for her and her family. When I had difficulty in a high school geometry class, she showed up on her lunch break to tutor me. When I had pre-final nerves, she taught me to trust the process and trust myself. When I told her I wanted to move to Detroit to pursue my Ph.D., she and her husband showed up to help me pack and traveled the distance to get me settled. Thank you mom, for seeing things in me I didn’t always see. Moreover, thank you for helping me believe that this is who I am supposed to be. Trump claimed victory over his opponent Hillary Rodham Clinton. Although Clinton took the popular vote by over 3 million votes, Trump claimed the electoral vote by unexpected gains made primarily in the Rust Belt of America. The surprise of Trump’s win sent shock waves out from Washington D.C. as it challenged much of what we thought we knew about political campaigning, the presidency, and rhetoric. Throughout the campaign a vast majority of political polls predicted an almost certain victory for Clinton. Patrick Murray, Director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute lamented, “The polls were largely bad, including mine. But if anyone thinks they have the answer right now, they are just guessing,” (Bialik & Enton, 2016). Political analysts and media commentators found themselves trying to explain on live television how a man that had engaged in often divisive and problematic rhetoric was just elected the President of the United States. CNN analyst Van Jones offered a particularly emotion filled election analysis: You tell your kids don’t be a bully, you tell your kids don’t be a bigot…and then you have this outcome. You have people putting children to bed tonight and they are afraid of breakfast. They’re afraid of ‘How do I explain this to my children?’” (Ryan, 2016) Across the nation many were asking the same question, what did we get wrong? What are we missing in this election? All signs seem to point to a phenomenon which data has a notoriously difficult time representing, emotion. “Supporters and opponents became the media themselves, spreading and amplifying subjective and emotional affective news-news designed to provoke passion, not inform,” (Hermida, 2016). 2 Hermida further opined that changes in the nature and role of media produced a “circular environment where emotion often overrides evidence, fueling the rise of polarized, passionate, and personalized streams of information,” (2016). Unfortunately for Clinton, this acceleration of emotion served

On Wednesday next [Dec. 6, 1899] the magnificent victory achieved then will have ben ratified by an increased majority. This is something more than a municipal campaign. There are issues involved that are of vital and commanding interest to every man, woman, and child in Haverhill, in Massachusetts, throughout the length and breadth of the land. The competitive system, with its extreme wealth upon the one hand, its abject and widespread poverty upon the other, its political corruption, its economic servitude, its social demoralization is on trial. What pen or tongue, from primeval man to the dullest intellect, can describe the effect of this struggle upon the great mass of the working people? Multiplied millions of them answer to the description of the embruted peasant in the poem of Edwin Markham, a poem fraught with such significance that it blazed the immortality of the author on wings of lightning around the world: Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground, The emptiness of ages in his face, And on his back the burden of the world. Who made him dead to rapture and despair, A thing that grieves not and that never hopes. Stolid and stunned, a brother to the ox? Who loosened and let down this brutal jaw? Proceeding from the proposal that the play allows for a remarkable level of audience identification for the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, considering their heinous acts, reasons for this level of identification are explored. Two events referred to in the text of Macbeth, but preceding the time of the play, are identified as potentially significant motivating factors in the couple's actions: Macbeth's recent experience of intense battle, and the couple's apparent past loss of a child. Supporting textual evidence is presented in addition to third party research into the effects of close combat and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the psychological effects on parents of losing a child. Smith, Chairman January 2019 Introduction While most of the attention on H.R. 1 has focused on “hot” issues, such as earmarking government subsidies for political campaigns, gerrymandering, and new restrictions on grassroots organizations that engage in public affairs,1 twenty pages of the bill are devoted to the unsexy, yet vitally important, issue of the Federal Election Commission’s (FEC) composition and operating procedures.2 If you’re a Democrat, do you think Donald Trump should be able to appoint a campaign speech czar to determine and en- force the rules on political campaigns? And if you’re a Republican, would you have wanted those rules enforced by a partisan selected by Barack Obama? Of course not. That’s why for over 40 years, Republicans and Democrats have agreed that campaign regulations should be enforced by an independent, bipartisan agency. The Watergate scandal that forced Richard Nixon to resign the presidency showed the dangers of allowing one party to use the power of government against the other.3 As the late Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Ca.) warned during debate on legislation creating the agency, “We must not allow the FEC to become a tool for harassment by future imperial Presidents who may seek to repeat the abuses of Watergate. I un- derstand and share the great concern expressed by some of our colleagues that the FEC has such a potential for abuse in our democratic society that the President should not be given power over the Commission.”4 That concern led to Congressional adoption of the present method of selecting Commission members.

Melania Plays Hide-and-Seek According to Wikipedia, the popular game Hide-and-Seek is suitable for children 4 years old and up. Melania is highly skilled in playing this game. She suddenly appears and then disappears. Looking back on the 2016 presidential campaign, she rarely appeared. She used her son Barron as an excuse and hid behind him. Melania avoids doing things that make her feel uncomfortable, of which there are many opportunities for this. Now in the White House, she hides Barron. Months go by and we do not see him. Why is she teaching him to do what she does? Does she want him to spend his adult life hiding, when a situation is or could be unpleasant? What happened to “Be Best,” her own initiative for children? Melania needs to encourage Barron to be self-confident, manage his feelings and speak up appropriately when necessary. It is true that the media has been unkind to him. That makes it critically important for Barron to start learning how to express his feelings as he is growing up.

    Philosophies of Happiness Appendix 4: Aristotle: Pleasure Without Sensation In Book 3.10, Aristotle attributes pleasure to thinking (dianoia); he writes that though the lover of honor or learning enjoys or takes pleasure (khairei) in the thing he loves, his body is not affected at all, only his thought.i As contemporary Aristotelian scholar J.O. Urmson notes, “this remark puzzled the commentator Aspasius to the point of exasperation: ‘What does he mean,’ he protests, ‘when he says that the enjoyment of lovers of learning or honour involves a condition of the intelligence? For enjoyment and the pleasures are not in the intelligence but in the affective (pathetiko) part of the soul.’” Urmson then comments: “Aspasius never understands Aristotle's view that enjoyment of learning is exhibited in the effortless concentration of the intelligence on its problems rather than in getting some feeling as a result or concomitant of one's study.”ii In other words, Aristotle held a “modal” rather than a “sensate” view of pleasure; pleasure is a mode of engaging in activity, rather than a feeling experienced as a result of activity. When the activity is a sensory one, Aristotle regards pleasure as the enjoyment of sensation, rather than as itself a sensation.iii Thus, although in 1.8, he does say that pleasure is among the things “of the soul,”iv the passage in 3.10 suggests that a thinking being without soul can take pleasure in whatever way it can think without an organ of thought, through understanding (nous) alone. Pleasure does not require sensation; we may take pleasure in a physical sensation, but Aristotle does not seem to regard physical sensation itself as pleasure.

The basis for this project is the notion that “pathos . is one of the most power- ful forms of persuasion and change” (5). As Blankenship writes, “[m]y purpose is to frame pathos in new ways and make a case for rhetorical empathy as a means of ethi- cal rhetorical engagement” (5).
