August Burns Red: Dynamik des modernen Metal Tournee zum achten Album „Phantom Anthem“ Neue Nuancen, mehr Härte, mehr Technik & mehr Emotion Im November/Dezember zehn Deutschland-Shows Ein beeindruckendes Beispiel für das innovative Entwicklungspotenzial harter Musik sind August Burns Red aus Lancaster/Pennsylvania. Sie hoben Metalcore – eine Verbindung von Metal-Riffs mit der Intensität des Hardcore – auf eine neue Ebene. Ihr drittes Album „Constellations“ (2009) schaffte es auch ohne Hitsingle in die Top 30 der Billboard Charts, der 2011 veröffentlichte Nachfolger „Leveler“ stieg bis auf Platz 11 in den USA und erzielte hohe Notierungen in England und Skandinavien. Seit ihrem 2013 erschienen Werk „Rescue & Restore“ gehören August Burns Red in den USA nun endgültig zu den Top-10-Kandidaten, und auch ihr aktuelles achtes Album „Phantom Anthem“, das für die Band viele neue Klang-Nuancen und stilistische Verdichtungen bereit hielt, platzierte sich international hoch in den Charts. Nun kommen August Burns Red zwischen dem 14. November und 16. Dezember für zehn Konzerte nach Deutschland, mit Stationen in München, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Bochum, Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Schweinfurt, Köln und Saarbrücken. In den letzten Jahren tauchten zahlreiche Bands auf, die die Idee von harter Musik weiterentwickeln. August Burns Red haben sich die Variabilität in Tempo, Lautstärke und Komplexität von ihren Vorbildern abgeschaut und virtuos umgesetzt. Zum einen gelingt es ihnen, den Intellekt des Metalcore mit einem intensiven Gefühl purer Leidenschaft zu verbinden. Zum anderen sorgt ihre Verankerung im christlichen Glauben für Aufrichtigkeit und Authentizität. Hier stehen fünf junge Männer auf der Bühne, die auch wirklich meinen, was sie singen und spielen. Diesen Eindruck vermitteln August Burns Red seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2003, als sie noch gemeinsam die Schulbank drückten. Schon ihre ersten Konzerte waren Stadtgespräch und im Internet wuchs ihre Anhängerschaft stetig. Bis heute wurden ihre Songs auf Spotify rund 50 Millionen Mal gespielt, bei YouTube wurden ihre Videos über 16 Millionen Mal abgerufen. Zwei Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung erschien das Debütalbum „Thrill Seeker“, das den Grundstein für eine weitere Qualität legte: unermüdliches Touren. Der Nachfolger „Messengers“ von 2007 eroberte Platz 1 der ‚Christian Rock Charts’ und verkaufte sich allein im Erscheinungsjahr knapp 100.000 Mal. Das dritte Album „Constellations“ landete 2009 auf Rang 24 der US-Charts. Mit dem 2011 erschienenen Werk „Leveler“ lieferten Jake Luhrs (Gesang), JB Brubaker und Brent Rambler (Gitarren) sowie Dustin Davidson (Bass) und Matt Greiner (Drums) ein Meisterstück ab. Stets getrieben von dem Bedürfnis nach Weiterentwicklung stellte die Band Ende 2012 mit „Sleddin’ Hill – A Holiday Album“ ein rein instrumentales, mit Jazz, Punk und Progressive Rock liebäugelndes Konzeptalbum vor, mit dem sie neue Grenzen innerhalb ihres Genres austesteten. Diese Experimente kamen auch der Arbeit an ihrem sechsten Album „Rescue & Restore“ zugute, das sich bei seinem Erscheinen im Juni 2013 als ihr kommerziell bislang erfolgreichstes erwies – und als ihr künstlerisch vielseitigstes. Mittlerweile kann man August Burns Red getrost als weltweit federführende Formation des Metalcore betiteln, was sich auch an dem internationalen Erfolg des Ende 2015 veröffentlichten Albums „Found In Far Away Places“ ablesen lässt – sowie dem Umstand, dass sie bei den Grammy-Awards eine Nominierung in der Kategorie ‚Best Metal Performance‘ erhielten. Ihr achtes Album „Phantom Anthem“, erneut aufgenommen mit ihren Stammproduzenten Carson Slovak und Grant McFarland, bedeutet für die Band erneut eine konsequente Weiterentwicklung. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
