All right reserved. 5 Days Mount Murud Adventure Climb - The Highest Mountain In Sarawak tour description Day 1 : BA'KELALAN ARRIVAL - LEPO BUNGA (-/L/D) Meet on arrival at Ba'Kelalan and transfer to a homestay. While the host family will prepare lunch for you, you have time to get ready your backpack with your necessities for the upcoming 3 days' trek. After lunch, we will drive by 4-wheel-drive for about 1 hour along a deserted logging road to Lepo Bunga jungle shelter (1,300 metres above sea level). Upon arrival at Lepo Bunga, learn a few jungle survival tricks from your guide and assist your guide to find some firewood for the preparation of your dinner. Overnight at Lepo Bunga jungle shelter (very simple accommodation). Note: Very basic wooden jungle shelter. Guests need to bring their own sleeping bag, as there are no beds or mattresses provided. Meals included:Lunch Dinner Day 2 : LEPO BUNGA - CHURCH CAMP (B/L/D) After an early breakfast you will start todays 5 to 6 hours trek. First trek up to Batu Linanit (2,250 metres above sea level), a mountain on the northern flank of Mount Murud. Here you will take a rest to enjoy the panoramic view. If weather permits, you might even see Mount Mulu and the sacred Batu Lawi mountains from here. Proceed to Church Camp (2,135 metres above sea level), the largest evangelical mountain church in Malaysia and a pilgrimage site for evangelical Christians. A very simple camp that can house up to 1,500 people was built to accommodate the pilgrims. Dinner will be cooked by your guide at the Church Camp. Overnight at Church Camp (very simple accommodation). Note: Very basic accommodation in simple huts at Church Camp. Guests need to bring their own sleeping bag, as there are no beds or mattresses provided. Meals included:Breakfast Lunch Dinner Day 3 : MOUNT MURUD SUMMIT (B/L/D) After breakfast, ascend to the summit of Mount Murud, the highest mountain in Sarawak (2,423 metres above sea level). Trekking time is approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on your fitness. Just before you reach the summit, you will pass through a very different type of vegetation, the so called mossy forest. You will also see carnivorous pitcher plants. Amongst them there is even one that is endemic to Mount Murud's summit area (nepenthes murudensis). Take a rest at the summit and enjoy the breath-taking view. The flights are operated on Twin Otter aircrafts and luggage allowance on these flights is limited (please refer to your flight ticket for exact information). If you overnight in Miri before and after this 5 days tour, your suitcases can be stored at your hotel in Miri. In case you just transit in Miri on the way to Ba'Kelalan and on the way from Ba'Kelalan to your next destination, we can arrange a representative of Diethelm Travel to meet you during your transit in Miri and store the luggage for you (not included in the package; charges depend on size and weight of luggage). Even if the package is booked on private basis, transfers & activities in the homestay may be on shared basis in order to minimise impacts on the natural environment or if other circumstances require so. Due to tough trekking for long hours, this tour is very strenuous and one is expected to have very high fitness level and good stamina. We advise guests to bring some high-energy snacks for the trekking. Due to very basic living conditions at Lepo Bunga jungle shelter and Church Camp, be prepared for some discomfort. Standard sources The Sunda Stink-badger (Teledu) imply that it occurs throughout Sarawak, but this stance is not supported by the few, and geographically restricted records here traced in a review of records from the state. Ansonia vidua, sp. nov., is morphologically distinguished from its Bornean congeners by the following combination of characters: medium size (SVL of adult females 33.5–34.4 mm); body uniformly black- brown in life; absence of a visible pattern on dorsum or limbs; presence of two low interorbital ridges; shagreened skin on dorsum, sides and upper surfaces of the limbs with numerous homogeneously small, rounded warts; first finger shorter than second; reduced webbing between the toes and an absence of a sharp tarsal ridge. Uncorrected genetic distances be- tween related taxa of > 4.3% in 16S rRNA gene support its status as a hitherto undescribed species.

Hq, Kuching, 2007 A study under ITTO-supported Project PD 224/03, Rev. 1 (F): Transboundary Biodiversity Conservation – The Pulong Tau National Park, Phase I 1.0 INTRODUCTION TO THE NORTHERN HIGHLANDS OF SARAWAK The north-east hinterland of Sarawak is known as the Northern Highlands. It comprises the Maligan Highlands in the Limbang Division and the Kelabit Highlands in the Miri Division. According to Kueh (2007), the Maligan Highlands covers an area of approximately 89,000 hectares. It is bordered to the east by Kalimantan, Indonesia, and the Malaysian state of Sabah. It extends northern to a point just above Long Semado. In the west it joins the watershed between the Trusan-Kelalan Rivers and the Limbang River that forms the western boundary. The Kelabit Highlands is the smaller of the two with an area of about 45,660 hectares. It is located south of the Maligan Highlands, with its eastern boundary formed by the Kalimantan border. Its northern and western boundaries are formed by the watersheds between Dappur River and the upper Tutoh and Limbang Rivers (see Map 1). To the south it is bounded by the Bayur River just south of the village of Bario. There are three population centers in the Northern Highlands - Long Semado is about 760 m, Ba’ Kelalan at 970 m, and Bario at just over 1,000 m above sea level. The majority of the Kelabit live in the Kelabit Highlands while some have settled in Long Lellang.

Where Spirit and Bulldozer Roam: Environment and Anxiety in Highland Borneo Abstract This paper explores changing perceptions of the natural environment among the Kelabit, an indigenous people of the Borneo interior. It considers both traditional and post-Christian conversion understandings about forest spaces. The former animistic ritual practices of the Kelabit centered on a spiritual dialogue with the natural world and this dialogue was often marked by active efforts to avoid or mitigate danger through ritual practice. One key example presented here is the former ceremony of 'calling the eagle' (nawar keniu), a ritual employed in times of crisis that exemplifies the dialogical and entwined relationship Kelabit had to the natural world.

    PULONG TAU BUFFER ZONE PULONG TAU About ITTO The ITTO is an inter-governmental organization established under United Nations sponsorship (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development or UNCTAD) with its headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. The ITTO PULONG TAU BUFFER ZONE forum is created through international treaty, the International Tropical Timber Agreement (ITTA). Its current Ecosystem, membership stands at 73, comprising 35 from producer countries and 38 from Biodiversity and consumer countries. The ITTO addresses the problems of tropical forests and tropical forestry, such as deforestation and social issues. People Its objectives are to act as a forum for them into effect; consultation and cooperation, and to Ecosystem, Biodiversity and People ITTO Project PD 635/12 Rev. 2 (F).
