It is the trans lator's belief that Merleau-Ponty's argument, as well as that of Koestler in Darkness at Noon (1946) raises questions that are still relevant to the fateful connection between revolu tion and violence. All the same, it may be useful to con temporary readers to recall some of the background to the dispute between Roestler and Merleau-Ponty and the way it involved intellectuals on the French left whether Commu nist or non-Communist. I shall not attempt to trace in any detail the postwar de velopments which are the setting for Humanism and Terror.

As the article went on to observe, ‘Even in the midst of one of the greatest challenges to capitalism in 75 years, involving a breakdown of the financial sys- tem because of “irrational exuberance”, greed and the weakness of regulatory systems, European socialists and their leftist cousins have not found a compelling response, let alone taken advantage of the failures of the right.’ There is no doubt that across Europe the failure of the social demo- cratic parties to present a ‘compelling response’ to the economic crisis has led to a wave of electoral setbacks.

  • Ambivalent French Communists in May 1968
ISSN 2239-978X Journal of Educational and Social Research Vol. 4 No.6 ISSN 2240-0524 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy September 2014 A Missed Opportunity or Party Rational? Ambivalent French Communists in May 1968 Yutaka Okuyama, Ph.D CEO. Crimson Academy [email protected] Doi:10.5901/jesr.2014.v4n6p435 Abstract The purpose of this study is the investigation of organizational behavior of the French communists in the May Movement in 1968. Particularly at the first part of the movement, a severe rivalry between the French Communist Party (PCF) and the radical student organizations occurred. Although both of them pursued the same political goals, they could not work out for a united front. Such a behavioral choice taken by the French communists enormously influenced the course of the events. Even if the atmosphere had not been ripe enough for a revolutionary movement, the actors involved could have pulled it off through instigative appeals in order to create an acute situation. Since the electoral results had clearly indicated that the PCF possessed a concrete support mechanism, the party could have a chance to grasp a casting board, even cooperating with the students. However, the PCF did not take it. Did the communists miss the opportunity? No, they did not. The French communists acted based on their party rational, combining both new and traditional ideas on that occasion. For the party, the May Movement offered them an occasion to show the public what they stood for. That was quite enough for a social movement actor as well as a political party.

  • The Popular Front, Civil-Military Relations and the French Army’S Plan to Defeat a Second Paris Commune, 1934–1936
international journal of military history and historiography 39 (2019) 63-87 IJMH brill.com/ijmh Plan Z: The Popular Front, Civil-Military Relations and the French Army’s Plan to Defeat a Second Paris Commune, 1934–1936 Andrew Orr* Kansas State University [email protected] Abstract Following the formation of the Popular Front in 1934, French generals feared that the alliance, which included the French Communist Party (pcf), could foreshadow a com- ing revolt in Paris. Generals Maxime Weygand and Maurice Gamelin responded by preparing to implement Plan Z, a plan to defeat a Parisian revolt. Given politicians’ fear that many French officers were antirepublican, the French Army would have faced a major political crisis if Plan Z had leaked. Plan Z called for a multidivisional assault on Paris, which showed that the General Staff believed a large-scale revolution was possible. Understanding the development of Plan Z adds to scholars’ recognition of French officers’ long-term fear of communism and mistrust of civilians. It reveals that senior officers were more politicized and afraid of civilians than most scholars have realized and helps explain the military’s central role in betraying the Third Republic and creating the Vichy Regime in 1940. Keywords France – Civil-Military – Communism – Interwar – Popular Front – Vichy * Andrew Orr is Associate Professor of Military History and Security Studies at Kansas State University. He received his PhD in Modern European History from the University of Notre Dame in 2007. He is the author of Women and the French Army during the World Wars, 1914– 1940 (Indiana, 2017) and has published articles on military history and civil-military relations in the Journal of Military History, French Historical Studies, and French History.

  • Class Cleavage Roots and Left Electoral Mobilization in Western Europe ONLINE APPENDIX
Lost in translation? Class cleavage roots and left electoral mobilization in Western Europe ONLINE APPENDIX Parties in the Class bloc For the classification of political parties in the class bloc, we have included “those parties which are the historical product of the structuring of the working-class movement” (Bartolini and Mair 1990 [2007], 46). Moreover, as the class cleavage is not only a historical product but a dynamic concept, we have also carefully assessed the potential inclusion of all those parties that are: 1) direct successors of traditional working-class parties or 2) new parties emphasizing traditional left issues. As regards direct successors of traditional working-class parties, issues related to party continuity and change across time arise. Class bloc parties changing name or symbol, merging or forming joint lists with other class bloc parties are obviously included in the Class Bloc. Conversely, in the case of splits or in the case of mergers between a class bloc party and a non-class bloc party, choices become less straightforward. Generally speaking, we looked at the splinter party and included it in the Class bloc whenever it still maintained a clear communist, socialist, or social democratic programmatic profile (e.g., the case of Communist Refoundation Party in Italy in 1992). Conversely, “right-wing” splits from Social democratic parties (e.g., the Centre Democrats from the Social Democratic Party in Denmark in 1973) that have explicitly abandoned their former ideological references to social democracy, shifting their programmatic focus away from economic left issues and embracing liberal, radical, green, or “new politics” ideological profiles, have been generally excluded from the Class Bloc.

While analyses of the Poujadists have generally focused on the movement’s ideological characteristics to evaluate its possible fascism or its classification as a member of the French far right, I look at Pierre Poujade and the label of fascism in the context of the postwar political climate and the politicized memory of the French Resistance.

  • The French Communist Party and Feminism
THE FRENCH COMMUNIST PARTY AND FEMINISM Jane Jenson Introduction In France, as in the rest of the advanced capitalist world, the women's movement has come to stay. The movement's demands for changes in the status of women and the new content which it has brought to politics can not be ignored. The political context which the French women's move- ment faced in the past decade was a Left revitalised around an alliance of parties, Union de la Gauche. This has meant, in contrast to Britain or North America, that a lively and socialist Left already existed with which the movement had to deal. And the parties of the Left, with their own analyses of advanced, monopoly capitalism could not ignore the women. A confrontation was inevitable; a resolution of benefit to both was more problematic. The mobilisation of women was only one of the many new social movements which characterised politics in the late 1960s and 1970s. Ecologists, students, consumers, anti-war activists, homosexuals, women, came together, in more or less formal organisations, to press their demands for social and political change. These 'single-issue movements' posed profound questions about traditional left practices of mobilisation and activism. In earlier years the parties of the Left were frequently the carriers of some of the concerns which later motivated the social movements In recent times, however, the movements have developed their own organisations which are, or attempt to be, autonomous of the parties. This autonomy plus the social base of many of the most important movements-in the 'new middle class'-has raised important strategic questions for the left parties.

  • The French Party System Forms a Benchmark Study of the State of Party Politics in France
evans cover 5/2/03 2:37 PM Page 1 THE FRENCH PARTY SYSTEM THE FRENCHPARTY This book provides a complete overview of political parties in France. The social and ideological profiles of all the major parties are analysed chapter by chapter, highlighting their principal functions and dynamics within the system. This examination is THE complemented by analyses of bloc and system features, including the pluralist left, Europe, and the ideological space in which the parties operate. In particular, the book addresses the impressive FRENCH capacity of French parties and their leaders to adapt themselves to the changing concerns of their electorates and to a shifting PARTY institutional context. Contrary to the apparently fragmentary system and increasingly hostile clashes between political personalities, the continuities in the French political system seem SYSTEM destined to persist. Drawing on the expertise of its French and British contributors, The French party system forms a benchmark study of the state of party politics in France. You are advised to consult the publisher’s version if you wish to cite from it. http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/128645/ Deposited on: 20 September 2016 Enlighten – Research publications by members of the University of Glasgow http://eprints.gla.ac.uk33640 SYRIZA’s electoral rise in Greece: protest, trust and the art of political manipulation Abstract Between 2010 and 2015, a period of significant political change in Greece, the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), a minor party, achieved and consolidated major party status. This article explores the role of political strategy in SYRIZA’s electoral success. It argues that contrary to accepted wisdom, targeting a ‘niche’ constituency or protesting against the establishment will not suffice for a minor party to make an electoral breakthrough. SYRIZA’s case demonstrates that unless a minor party is ready to claim that it is willing and able to take on government responsibility, electoral advancement will not be forthcoming. The success of SYRIZA’s strategy can be attributed to favourable electoral demand factors and apt heresthetic manipulation of issue dimensions.
