The aim of this paper is to analyze Roman Polanski‟s film The Ghost Writer (2010) from a „transnational‟ perspective, that is, as a text that, while considering the idea of nation and its borders as paramount elements of our times and identities, focuses on the anxiety and unease that it means for humans to be inevitably subjected to their sovereignty. To do so, I shall, first, introduce the socio-political and cultural changes that have affected our perception of the absoluteness of the frontier, that “elusive line, visible and invisible, physical, metaphorical, amoral and moral” (Rushdie 2002: 78) that limits our existences and identities, and its slippery ontology. Secondly, I shall reflect on the reasons why cinema has as a whole become such a powerful symbol and channel for all the changes that define our post-modern times, and, more precisely, on how transnational cinema‟s contestation of national limitations suits the human experience of the last century so well.

Within six months of Bush’s victory in the United States, the Olive Tree coalition had crumbled before Berlusconi’s Forza Italia. The autumn of 2001 saw Social Democrats driven from office in Norway and Denmark. In April 2002 Kok’s Labour-led government resigned over a report pointing to Dutch troops’ complicity in the Srebrenica massacre. The following month, Jospin came in a humiliating third behind Chirac and Le Pen in the French presidential contest, and the Right triumphed in the legislative elections. In Germany, the spd–Green coalition clung on by a whisker, aided by providential floods. Though the sap retains its historic grip on Sweden it now lacks an absolute majority, and Persson was trounced in the 2003 campaign for euro entry. In Greece, where pasok has only been out of power for three years since 1981, Simitis squeaked back in 2000 with a 43.8 to 42.7 per cent lead. Within this landscape, Britain has been the conspicuous exception. In the United Kingdom alone a Centre Left government remains firmly in place, its grip on power strengthened, if anything, in its second term of office, and still enjoying a wide margin of electoral advantage. Both features—New Labour’s survival against the general turn of the polit- ical wheel, and the scale of its domestic predominance—set it apart within the oecd zone.

    Intergenerational memory, The Labour Party, and The Ghost of the Two Tony’s Daniel James Lewis MA by Research University of York History July 2018 Abstract This dissertation will examine the Labour Party memberships’ understanding of its own history. By use of an online survey the individual grassroots membership was contacted and asked to give their opinion regarding certain major leaders, figures, internal and external events in the recent history of the party. These results were cross referenced with published studies carried out by Seyd and Whiteley in the 1980s and 90s. The results illustrate that there is a generational split in the collective memory of the party between two groups, basically these two groups are younger and older party generations. This split can be explained by the ‘reminiscence bump’ which is a concept from the world of psychology. Those who identify with a particular ideological section of the party are much more likely to have a different perceptions of the past compared with other sections. As Whiteley has shown, people join the party for either instrumental or expressive reasons and that those two reasons become manifest in different perceptions of the two figures of Tony Blair and Tony Benn. These differing perceptions reinforce the idea that the past is always viewed through the lens of the present.     Novelising New Labour Stuart Kelly During the 1997 election, the Tory propaganda poster of ‘Demon Eyes’ Tony Blair caused more mirth than anxiety. It seemed, somehow, inappropriate and desperate; with the supreme irony being that a decade later, the identification of Blair with dark forces would be commonplace. It is not so much the popular representation of Blair, but the changes in his popular representation that differentiate him from Thatcher, Clinton and Bush. TV drama has attempted to dramatise the agonised and deluded Blair (in, say, Alistair Beaton’s The Trial of Tony Blair for Channel 4); cartoonists have ‘retconned’ their imagery (Martin Rowson’s blood- stained Bambi springs to mind) and satirists have made much of such early pronouncements as ‘pretty straight guys’. As early as December 1997, British comic 2000 AD ran a strip featuring B.L.A.I.R. 1, a robotic prime minister whose radiant smile belied its lethal nature, and whose eyes went red whenever ‘Doctor Spin’ took control of him. Revealing though these are, I will concern myself with Blair’s less ephemeral depic- tions and self-depictions. After broadly situating the debate in terms of how ideology and cultural production inter-relate, I will discuss the novelistic apparitions of Tony Blair. While Literary History and Political History may not march to exactly the same beat, there are frequent periods when they fall into step with one another. ‘Victorian Literature’ is convenient shorthand for a vast array of post-Romantic and pre-Modernist poetry; novels of social examination, propagandist intent, saccharine fantasy and idiosyncratic whim; histories and counter-histories; public pronouncements and private letters, all of which can be collapsed into a retrospective and descriptive term.

    The Dynamics of Transformative Ideas in Contemporary Political Discourse METHODOLOGICAL NOTES RELATING TO MATERIAL LODGED IN THE ESDS DATA ARCHIVE Janet Vaux The ‘ideas’ project was carried out at two main case-study sites, which were selected for their perceived profile in the development of policy ideas and their presence in contemporary policy discourse in the UK. We drew on a mix of methods for collecting and interpreting material, including semi-structured interviews, on-site observation and the reading of selected sets of literature produced at the case-study sites. The material lodged in the Data Archive reflects these three approaches, and includes: • 25 transcribed interviews • four ‘diaries’ recording on-site observations • Six working paper, including literature surveys from the field and from the case- study sites. These notes are intended to help users of the archive to navigate this material and explain some of our decisions about the collection and recording of material, including the lodging of ‘semi-anonymous’ interviews, our use of selective (not full or fully literal) transcription techniques, and our exploratory use of quasi-ethnographic ‘diaries’. Difficulties of ‘anonymisation’ The research project was small and historically focused. It was based on case studies within two institutions that are unusually active in contemporary policy discourse. This is not to say that they are uniquely active (there are other high profile institutions we could have chosen), but rather that they cannot be made to stand for a broad group of institutions. Attempts to anonymise the institutions would not only be difficult, but would also detract from the historical interest of the research.
