    Scopus 34: 1–23, January 2015 Systematic and taxonomic issues concerning some East African bird species, notably those where treatment varies between authors Donald A. Turner and David J. Pearson Summary The taxonomy of various East African bird species is discussed. Fourteen of the non- passerines and forty-eight of the passerines listed in Britton (1980) are considered, with reference to treatments by various subsequent authors. Twenty-three species splits are recommended from the treatment in Britton (op. cit.), and one lump, the inclusion of Jackson’s Hornbill Tockus jacksoni as a race of T. deckeni. Introduction With a revision of Britton (1980) now nearing completion, this is the first of two pa- pers highlighting the complexities that surround some East African bird species. All appear in Britton in one form or another, but since that landmark publication our knowledge of East African birds has increased considerably, and with the advances in DNA sequencing, our understanding of avian systematics and taxonomy is con- tinually moving forward. A tidal wave of phylogenetic studies in the last decade has revolutionized our understanding of the higher-level relationships of birds. Taxa pre- viously regarded as quite distantly related have been brought together in new clas- sifications and some major groups have been split asunder (Knox 2014). As a result we are seeing the familiar order of families and species in field guides and checklists plunged into turmoil. The speed at which molecular papers are being published continues at an unprec- edented rate. We must remember, however, that while many molecular results may indicate a relationship, they do not necessarily prove one.

    Tanzania, 30 November to 21 December 2020 Thomas Pettersson This tour was organized by Tanzania Birding and Beyond Safaris and unfortunately, I was the only participant as my friend was prevented from going as was planned. The flights from Stockholm via Addis Ababa to Dar es Salaam and back with Ethiopian Airlines were uneventful. The only differences from my previous flights were that wearing face masks on the aircrafts was mandatory, and recommended at the airports, and that they checked my body temperature at both arrival and departure. I am not sure what the consequences would have been in case of fever. You must also complete a health declaration both for transfer and arrival. The outbound flight from Stockholm to Addis Ababa was about half empty and on the return perhaps only 25 % of the seats were occupied, which meant good nights sleep on three seats both ways. The flights between Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam were fully booked both ways. The domestic flights with Coastal Aviation from Dar es Salaam via Zanzibar (Unguja) to Pemba and on to Tanga were also smooth, with the same regulations as above. The aircrafts were painfully small though, 12 seats. Not much space for legs and hand luggage. On the other hand, the distances are short. All in all, the tour was a big success. Accommodation was generally good, although basic at some places, but nothing to complain about. Food was excellent and plentiful, and I had no issues with the stomach. The drivers and the guides were excellent, in particular the outstanding Anthony, who guided most of the tour.

ULTIMATE KENYA 1 – 20 / 25 APRIL 2017 LEADER: DANI LOPEZ-VELASCO Kenya lived up to its reputation of being one of the most diverse birding destinations on our planet. Once again, our Ultimate Kenya recorded a mind-boggling total of more than 750 species. This was despite the fact that we were prioritizing Kenyan specialities (a task in which we were extremely successful) rather than going all out for a huge list! 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Ultimate Kenya www.birdquest-tours.com The first leg of our epic adventure saw us focusing on the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest where the birding is tough but the rewards are great. Over the course of the two and a half days our talented local guide helped us find all of the main specialities, with the exception of the difficult Clarke’s Weavers, which were presumably on their recently discovered breeding grounds in marshes to the north. Crested Guineafowl and Northern Carmine Bee-eater. We spent much time creeping along sandy tracks, gradually finding our targets one by one. We succeeded in getting great views of a number of skulkers, including a rather showy East Coast Akalat on our last afternoon, some reclusive Eastern Bearded Scrub Robins, a very obliging Red-tailed Ant Thrush and skulking Fischer’s and Tiny Greenbuls. Once in the Brachystegia we kept our eyes and ears open for roving flocks of flock-leader Retz’s and Chestnut-fronted Helmet Shrikes, and with these we found awkward Mombasa Woodpeckers and a single Green-backed Woodpecker, and a variety of smaller species including Black-headed Apalis, Green Barbet, Eastern Green Tinkerbird, dainty Little Yellow Flycatchers, Forest Batis, Pale Batis, cracking little Amani and Plain-backed Sunbirds and Dark-backed Weaver.

(Pete Morris) REMOTE TANZANIA 27 SEPTEMBER / 1 – 16 / 24 OCTOBER 2016 LEADER: PETE MORRIS Our 2017 tour to ‘Remote Tanzania’ turned out to be a fantastic adventure that way-surpassed most of our expectations. And with the addition of a pre-tour Northern Tanzania endemics extension, and a post-tour Ud- zungwa Mountains extension, the tour really was converted to an ‘Ultimate Tanzania’. For most of the tour we were accompanied by our ever reliable, super friendly and effcient local driver and excellent local guide, and were blessed with largely good weather, most importantly when we were camping up in the mountains. With such a good set up and conditions, there were few excuses, so we effciently set about our task of hoovering up the endemics, whilst enjoying the other wonders that this great country has to offer. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Remote Tanzania 2016 www.birdquest-tours.com The stunning Swynnerton’s Robin... a highlight of the Udzungwa Extension (Pete Morris) The pre-tour extension involved a whistle stop trek from Arusha to the Lariboro Plains and then down to Ndutu on the edge of the great Serengeti Plains and back via the amazing Ngorongoro Crater. Our task was to fnd the endemics: Grey-breasted Spurfowl, Yellow-collared and Fischer’s Lovebirds, Beesley’s Lark, Rufous-tailed Weaver and Ashy Starling all performed well alongside an excellent cast of other hoped-for birds and mam- mals. The main tour saw us travelling through arid plains and on to the South Pare Mountains, the East and West Usambaras, the attractive Pemba Island, the remote Uluguru and Ukaguru Mountains, the impressive Mikumi National Park and its surrounding miombo woodlands and the little explored Kilombero Plains.

    Field Guides Tour Report KENYA SAFARI SPECTACULAR Sep 2, 2011 to Sep 30, 2011 Terry Stevenson Our Kenya September 2011 tour was rather unusual in that we had exceptional variation in what would normally be expected of the rains. Samburu (in the north) was typically dry, but most of the rest of the country including Mt. Kenya, Baringo, Kakamega, and the Lake Victoria basin were exceptionally wet. By contrast, the coastal forests were probably the driest we've seen in 25 years of annual visits there. So how did this affect the birds and mammals we'd travelled so far to see? Without doubt rain is good, as everything comes into breeding plumage at that time -- the glorious sunbirds, weavers, whydahs, and widowbirds all looking their very best. There's less dust and clear morning skies and lush green scenery, but on the down side you may miss the occasional afternoon birding at places like Kakamega Forest. On the whole, however, rain is a good thing, and I'd say we did very well on this 'out-of-season' tour. For visitors new to the African continent, the first Ostrich in Nairobi National Park is always a thrill and, though perhaps not so stately, the Marabou Storks are, too. Then there were our first mousebirds, colorful Lilac-breasted Rollers, an African Paradise-Flycatcher right at the entrance gate, and of course our first mammals -- Lion, African Buffalo, Giraffe, and Burchell's Zebra, to mention just a few. We then headed north, visiting the low dry-bush country of Samburuland, where we found our first Vulturine Guineafowl, Bateleur, the enormous Verreaux's Eage-Owl, bustards, coursers, sandgrouse, and other ground-dwelling birds.

    KENYA TRIP REPORT AUGUST 2008 August 1 / LAKE NAIVASHA & NAIVASHA COUNTRY CLUB I awoke to a steady drizzle that accompanied me on our journey through Nairobi and to the Longonot Escarpment which begins the descent to the Rift Valley 1500’ below. At least it was clear enough so one could see a good distance across the valley but the skies remained heavily overcast. A lorry failed to negotiate a bend and was on its side but there was enough room for one lane to get by. Once on the valley floor Pied Crows and Cape Rooks became common roadside birds, and in one place they were feeding on a pair of road kill hyenas. In a wheat field 3 Secretary Birds, terrestrial feeding raptors, kept their distance from each other and worked the rows searching for something to eat. Once we reached the entrance to the Naivasha Country Club a Bronzed Sunbird was busy feeding on Leonotis flower heads. Kenya Rufous Sparrows and Streaky Seedeaters were amongst the short grasses while a Rufous-naped Lark was singing from on top of a stalk. In the car park one was immediately struck by all the different colors of the bougainvillea bushes. A Tropical Boubou was collecting nesting material and a White- headed Barbet and Red-eyed Doves were quite happy feeding in a berry tree as a Red-chested Cuckoo’s 3-noted calls rang out from the top of a Yellow-barked Acacia, locally known as a fever tree. Once on the manicured lawns of the grounds Sacred Ibis wander about as peacocks would on an estate and Superb Starlings are constantly busy moving about from the lawn to the lower tree branches.

In this paper, the ecosystem floristic composition, richness, diversity and affinities are evaluated. Diameter at breast height (dbh) was measured and types and levels of disturbances recorded in plots, dbh of saplings measured in subplots and seedlings counted in microplots. To obtain the floristic composition and richness, we categorized species based on their families, development stages and life forms. Shannon-Wiener information index (H’) and Jaccard (JIA) and Sorensen(S) similarity indices were used to evaluate the species diversity and similarity respectively Trees, recorded belonged to 52 species, 45 genera and 31 families for seedlings; 43 species, 38 genera and 29 families for saplings and 55 species, 48 genera and 31 families for mature trees.
