    Chapter III A Brief Cultural History of Indian Poetry in English (Till 1990) No semiotic system exists in isolation, thus every culture in being a system has to be studied both as an immanent culture and in its relation with the extra-culture and the dynamics of its internal and external structures. Indian poetry in English as a cultural text is a hierarchy of texts evolved through the interaction of the internal sphere with the external sphere and as a result of the amalgamation of both gradual (continuous) and explosive (unpredictable) processes. It has established itself as a culture by delimiting its boundaries, though fluid and permeable, through a process of self description. The first interactions between English and India were not between just two languages like English and Hindi or English or Sanskrit. They were happening in a polyglot environment consisting of languages like English, Sanskrit, Persian and Bengali. It would be best to see them as interactions of multiple heterogeneous semiotic systems within one semiosphere. This chapter discusses the cultural-historical evolution of the Indian poetry in English, the over two century long journey from ‘Anglo-Indian’ to ‘Indo-Anglian’ to finally ‘Indian’ poetry in English. The nationalist concerns have led literary historians to consider only poets of Indian origin as part of the Indian English canon, beginning with Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (1809-1831). Accordingly Indian poetry in English is supposed to have begun in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Though considering Derozio as an Indian poet defined by conventional parameters also has its complications owing to his mixed parentage.

This report is available on the World Wide Web at https://escholarship.org/uc/item/75j1b2cg. 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The Indian film industry releases the largest number of movies in the world, 1500-2000 movies in Hindi and other regional languages, which are watched by more than 2 billion Indian moviegoers and millions more worldwide. • The tobacco industry has been using movies to promote their products for over a century. • In India, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and Cable Television Networks Amendment Act, 1994, nominally provide for regulation of tobacco imagery in film and TV, but the Ministry of Information and Broadcast (MoIB), the nodal ministry, has not considered tobacco imagery. • The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COPTA), enforced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), prohibited direct and indirect advertisement of tobacco products.

Well, at some point in their lives they all saw their creative and poetic urge in print within the covers of a Writers Workshop book. Indian Writing in English (or Indo-Anglian writing as it was then called) has come a long way from its uncertain beginnings, and since the founding of this non-profit and non-political institution (Writers Workshop) in Calcutta way back in 1958. As stated in its motto, Writers Workshop consisted of “a group of writers who agree in principle that English has proved its ability, as a language, to play a creative role in Indian literature, through transcreation from India, the Commonwealth and other English-using territories.” The present book under review is an appropriate tribute to the completion of fifty years of Writers Workshop and with ninety six poets under one cover (some big names now, others faded into oblivion after the first flush of their creative muse) stands as a proof of the role that Writers Workshop played on the “pace and space” of the poets. For several years it was the only platform that most writers of Indo-Anglian literature had. The poetry that was born out of national politics, peasantry, and folklore infused with the coloniser’s tongue sounded different and assumed a separate identity and this was the only platform for self-expression.
