Music in Three Dimensions & Finding Work in the Field of Game Audio University of Rochester Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering AME Seminar Series Music in Three Dimensions and Finding work in the field of Game Audio Guy Whitmore Composer-Creative Director-Founder TricksterSong Productions Wednesday, November 29th 12:00PM – 1:00PM Wegmans Hall 1400 Abstract: The recent advances of immersive VR experiences is pushing audio fully into the realm of 3D/360 audio. These are early days of experimentation; there are no hard and fast rules or best practices in this Wild West. This talk will look at current and possible approaches to creating music scores that take advantage of the 360 degree soundstage. Bio: In 1994, Guy was hired by Sierra On-line as a staff composer/sound designer. His first game-score was nominated for Best Soundtrack by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS). At Monolith Productions (1997-1999) his reputation for creating highly innovative interactive music scores, on games such as Shogo, No One Lives Forever, and Tron 2.0, was established. In 1999 he was hired by Bootleg TV, founded by Robert Fripp, where he explored the possibilities of non-linear music as a standalone format. Guy joined Microsoft Game Studios in 2004 where he became Director of Audio, participating in the audio production of major franchises including Fable, Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing, Crackdown, and Halo. Guy moved to PopCap Games/EA in 2010, overseeing classic franchises such as Bejeweled, Peggle, and Plants vs. Zombies, earning 4 G.A.N.G. (Game Audio Network Guild) awards, positive press, and much fan appreciation and joy! This year Guy launched TricksterSong; a music production company focusing on adaptive soundtracks for games, VR, and new media. Pizza and soda provided .

A Binary Within the Binary: Machinima as Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Megan R. BROWN has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Louis-Georges Schwartz Associate Professor of Film Studies Charles A. McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BROWN, MEGAN R., M.A., December 2012, Film Studies A Binary Within the Binary: Machinima as Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation (128 pp.) Director of Thesis: Louis-Georges Schwartz. This thesis traces machinima, films created in real-time from videogame engines, from the exterior toward the interior, focusing on the manner in which the medium functions as a tool for marginalized expression in the face of commercial and corporate inclusion. I contextualize machinima in three distinct contexts: first, machinima as historiography, which allows its minority creators to articulate and distribute their interpretation of national and international events without mass media interference. Second, machinima as a form of fan fiction, in which filmmakers blur the line between consumers and producers, a feature which is slowly being warped as videogame studios begin to incorporate machinima into marketing techniques. Finally, the comparison between psychoanalytic film theory, which explains the psychological motivations behind cinema's appeal, applied to videogames and their resulting machinima, which knowingly disregard established theory and create agency through parody.

  • Electronic Arts Buys Popcap for $750M
http://venturebeat.com/2011/07/12/ea-popcap-acquire-750m/ Electronic Arts buys PopCap for $750M July 12, 2011 1:27 PM Dean Takahashi and Matthew Lynley Supergiant video game publisher Electronic Artshas acquired casual game maker PopCap for $650 million in cash and $100 million in stock. The deal includes a multi-year earn out bonus, but there were no details released about it. PopCap is an appealing target for almost any game company because it has several extremely popular games that can be turned into franchises. The company also has a large number of regular users who purchase games from the company, and it is expanding into social gaming with games like Bejeweled Blitz. It’s a rare company that draws all kinds of gamers — social, casual, mobile and hardcore. PopCap cofounder John Vechey said in an interview with VentureBeat that Electronic Arts felt like a great match because John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, is very knowledgeable about games and understands what PopCap is good at. Barry Cottle, head of EAi, the company’s mobile and casual game studio, said the deal is a smart one and that EA did not pay an excessive amount for PopCap. Cottle said PopCap is one of the dominant companies in casual games with fast growth on both Facebook and mobile games. The company makes more than $100 million in revenues a year and is growing at a 30 percent rate. Sales of Bejeweled made up about 40 percent of its revenues, and about 20 percent came from Plants vs Zombies, PopCap chief executive Dave Roberts told VentureBeat.
